That good old punk music

how many of you here at USM listen to the good ol' punk rockers from the '70s? the REAL punks. i'm talking about the Ramones, the Sex Pistols, the Clash, the New York Dolls, the Misfits, Richard Hell, the Stooges....all those freaks!

the ones who were punk before "punk" became going to Hot Topic and buying some cool t-shirt with a "punk" band on it. these were the men and women who went out there and did their own thing and practically changed the history of music forever. they didn't care about the money or fame, they just wanted to be heard. inspired by the likes of Elvis Presley, the Rolling Stones, Chuck Berry among many other "oldies" artists, these punk rockers brought rock 'n roll back to its basic, loud, rebellious spirit.

no over-thought, technical musical masterpieces with deep, philosophical lyrics. just simple, fast three-chord songs. punk music made it possible for anyone to pick up an instrument, put together a song and express themselves through music. the message was more important than the music. (now don't get me wrong, punk music doesn't sound horrible. a lot of the songs are more catchy than some tunes on the radio today!)

and that's why i love the old punk music. it's pure rock 'n roll energy!

so, does anyone here at USM listen to it? what are your opinions of it? or, for those of you who actually lived when punk rock was alive, what were your thoughts of it?

Date: 8/6/2004 10:40:00 PM  From Authorid: 57232    One of the best soundtracks ever is the soundtrack to Repo Man, I think it has my great song on there "Institutionalized" by Suicidal Tendencies...grrrreat song
Date: 8/6/2004 10:40:00 PM  From Authorid: 24732    77' punk is mostly what I listen to. I love the sound of short, fast, 3 chord progressions like old rock n' roll, and often humorous and crazy lyrics. That's exactly what my taste is in music.
Date: 8/6/2004 11:16:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 40899    suicidal tendencies! that's another one of 'em! i'm gonna download that song
Date: 8/6/2004 11:33:00 PM  From Authorid: 62825    i've been into punk since i was about 16, exept for me the official bands are social distortion, pennywise, anti-flag, against all authority, bad religion, stuff like that, its good stuff. and i know what ya mean by what radio thinks punk is, i think it sucks too in fact good charlette makes me wanna rip my own face off and eat it. but then again taste in music is kinda like religion and politics, you can spend years saying what you think is better but it really doesnt get you anywhere. thats why i keep an open mind, especially to death metal!!! raaaarrrhhhh!!! haha mmmmm beer.
Date: 8/7/2004 12:06:00 AM  From Authorid: 3835    I am more into Trance Generes, myself. I do however like listening to The Clash, I heard that at a friend's home and really liked their music, but on the up, I have to say that Trance in all its styles, like ambient, acid, easy listening, and hard trance generes, are my preferred pleasure. Most of those have no lyrics to them, just the music.
Date: 8/7/2004 1:06:00 AM  From Authorid: 26452    I like most kinds of music(except pop, and rap). I love The Clash, and The Misfits.
Date: 8/7/2004 9:17:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 40899    you got a point there, 62825. it is good to keep an open mind!
Date: 8/7/2004 9:51:00 AM  From Authorid: 54963    I was born in the 80's but I was raised on punk. I would cry as a baby when my parents would turn the radio.
Date: 8/7/2004 10:14:00 AM  From Authorid: 62456    yes, I was actually "alive" when punk was new! I was just graduating from high school and then got more into it when I lived in Germany.Punk was big in Berlin-and those were real punks squatting in abandoned buildings--oh the memories...anyway, The Clash for sure, Butthole surfers (yes they used to be punk) Flipper, Scandals, it goes on and on. I loved it! It was so refreashing and exciting and felt dangerous...IsisKat
Date: 8/7/2004 11:00:00 AM  From Authorid: 43336    I love The Ramones!
Date: 8/7/2004 5:05:00 PM  From Authorid: 62503    Oh yes!!!!!!!! I listen to all of the old REAL punk. Its just plain awesome its so real. and the stuff today just isnt quite as good by my opinion
Date: 8/7/2004 6:24:00 PM  From Authorid: 32133    yeah i love REAL punk.....i cant stand these new bands that try to pass themselves off as "punk" but are really just mainstream pop bands.
Date: 8/7/2004 11:05:00 PM  From Authorid: 51070    I wish I was alive back then. I was born right at the end of it, pretty much. But yeah, I listen to the old stuff, like the Ramones, the Sex Pistols, the Dead Kennedys - I don't understand how people can call Avril 'punk', because she's anything but. Today, all 'punk' is about is the clothes. It isn't even about the true meaning behind the music, expressing oneself, creativity, or intelligence. It's people like Avril who turned it into the mainstream pop garbage we're all trying to escape from!
Date: 8/8/2004 2:06:00 PM  From Authorid: 57726    I love the Misfits...
Date: 11/16/2004 2:35:00 PM  From Authorid: 35160    i dont, i cant stand that stuff . it hurts my head.. :D
Date: 11/16/2004 3:18:00 PM  From Authorid: 13119    The Clash, The Ramones I have my daughter listening to those. I think I will save DOA and Dead Kennedies for later. Sex Pistols as well.
