Computers replacing people at stores.... ~Toodles~

I don't know how many people have experienced this yet depending on where they live, but have any of you noticed the increased amount of computer reliance and the decrease of reliance on people. Meaning you can go to the grocery store or nearest hardware store and the check outs clerks are no longer there and instead is a computer that checks you out. I know some people think this is great; it's a fast, no hassle deal. But on the flip side you hear how this is taking away jobs from those that may be less educated. Also I think some people feel it's strange not to have some kind of interaction with a person when being checked out.

So, have people been replaced by computers where you live at? And how do you feel about this change that's going on?

Take Care, Toodles

Date: 8/7/2004 1:01:00 PM  From Authorid: 24732    I like to check my own stuff out at the stores with those check out computers. Sometimes it doesn't take bills right, but for people with credit cards it works even faster. I'd also like it if it lowered prices; since the price of computer employees is less then human employees for the business.
Date: 8/7/2004 2:35:00 PM  From Authorid: 3835    I hope to avoid them as long as possible (-: I am not too fond of the idea, and they are starting to show up around my area as of a few months ago.
Date: 8/7/2004 2:54:00 PM  From Authorid: 62503    we have them in walmart and that is it really. I like them because walmart is so crowded and if im in there im only generally getting 1 or 2 things so it makes it easier for me to avoid the crowds

Date: 8/7/2004 4:13:00 PM  From Authorid: 20750    Yes they are here! I do not like them! I feel there is way more to it than we know! I won't use it unless I am forced to & then again I may just go to another store!
Date: 8/7/2004 4:36:00 PM  From Authorid: 42945    not over here yet Toodles!!!although, the human presence at the checkouts are becoming less and less, we wait for what seems eternity to get through checkouts....the stores have a dozen checkouts but not even half are open at any one time..I like the interaction with the girls while checking out my shopping and I dont know how long it will be before they are replaced by computers..good post ...hugs
Date: 8/7/2004 8:35:00 PM  From Authorid: 37101    I don't feel why there's an element of surprise here. Why not have computers? There a semi-easily fixed resource that's generally dependable and works without emotion, no questions asked. They've got humans whipped. -
Date: 8/8/2004 1:50:00 AM  From Authorid: 26452    It hasn't gone that far yet, but I don't like it one bit, I think humans rely WAY too much on computers and technology. Who knows what they will take over next!
Date: 8/8/2004 3:15:00 AM  From Authorid: 53558    It hasn't happened where I live, Toodles, but I don't think it will be long before it does..Good post..It is nice to see you posting again...huggss...(",)..
Date: 8/8/2004 10:01:00 AM  From Authorid: 3263    I actually prefer the U-scans!! Maybe because I've become increasingly antisocial :p I do see what you're saying, though, about them taking away jobs. Very good point. I think it's ultimately about $$, and how the company can save money by installing say 4 computers and hiring one person to oversee those, as opposed to hiring 4 people.
Date: 8/8/2004 10:51:00 AM  From Authorid: 62787    i never go to the computers at walmart. i always have problems. well, the computers are less able to miscalculate and can make a price check faster. but nothing beats a teen kid with an attitude! LOL- Blade of the Samurai
Date: 8/8/2004 2:47:00 PM  From Authorid: 53909    We have a couple of those in a few grocery stores and retail stores. Sometimes I'll go to one if I just have one item but they can be so annoying like if you don't scan it right or bag it right. Sometimes going to a regular register goes faster than the computered ones.
Date: 8/8/2004 5:57:00 PM  From Authorid: 6003    The store where I shop has 4 U-Scans, and I use them all the time. However, many people, especially elderly people don't like them and are uncomfortable using them. I think that having a few of them is a good thing, but I hope they never completely replace check out clerks.
