Is Democracy really an illusion, that keeps the powerful in power?--r1

Democracy is viewed as good, because the People have control. The People's voice is what matters. As opposed to the powerful, and dictators ruling everything. But what if this view of democracy is really a illusion?

What if the magic of democracy is that it allows the powerful to remain in power under the illusion, that the shouting, complaining, masses of voting people are really in control?

Think about it! Once every four years, people get to be really upset. They shout and complain a little bit more than normal. They vote. Get it out of their system, and are content for another four years!

Think about this. We live in a culture where people can rant and complain about government all they want! What if this actually does more to help keep the elite and powerful in power, instead of actually getting them out of power? Basically people can vent, and rant, but when they feel better most of the time NOTHING changes. Other than they feel better. After each ranting and complaining session the powerful still remain in power.

In our democracy the powerful and elite really do control everything. I don't care if the president has a ranch and can't speak English too well, he is still part of the power and elite. They hold onto control as the people are free to rant, complain and vote! All the while the elite know that the people's ranting, complaining and voting won't losen their grip on power.

So here's the question. Is Democracy the perfect illusion, that the powerful use, to make the people think that they are really in control? Does giving people the freedom to vent their opinion, create an environment that is much safer for the elite, than an environment where the masses can't voice a thing, live with pent up rage, then stage an armed revolt of some kind, that actually does get the elite out of power?

In a democracy, people can blow off steam any time they want. In other forms, the people have to keep all that rage pent up! Which one is safer for the powerful and elite to live in? The one where people simply vent and rant but nothing else happens? Or one where people store up their rage, til it finally bursts, and a revolution of sorts breaks out? To me, democracy seems like the safest for the elite.

Date: 9/29/2004 2:46:00 PM  From Authorid: 37101    The saying goes... Majority rule, minority rights. The popular opinion by the people is executed and maintained but with all due respect to the preservation of the minority's rights. Where's the problem? -
Date: 9/29/2004 10:23:00 PM  From Authorid: 37900    If our system of government is an illusion, it is one we have created. If the elite remain in power, it is because too few of us are concerned enough about the issues to elect someone with a different viewpoint. Incumbents have a greater than 90% chance of being re-elected and many of them seem to feel that, once they're in power, they are no longer accountable to the "ignorant commoners" that elected them. If enough of us were sufficiently agitated, there would be term limits for members of Congress, they would have to live under the same health care and Social Security constraints as we do, they would not be able to vote themselves hefty pay raises in secret each year and they would balance the federal budget. Many in power depend on the public's distaste of political campaigns and its short memory of voting records to remain in power. The good news is, we can change this scenario if we want: every election, we can replace a sizable portion of the House of Representatives and the Senate; every four years, we can replace the President. One fact is certain: with so few Americans willing to educate themselves about what matters to them and translate that knowledge into votes, the elitism will continue. If we are not willing to exercise our right to vote, we relinquish our right to complain about the slovenly conditions of our society. Great post, R1!

Date: 10/6/2004 1:13:00 PM  From Authorid: 61928    Yes, it's high time we hand over power to the mediocre, the subpar and the inferior. Do you ever actually stop and read what you're suggesting?
