Execution of Private Slovik, Is It Time He Was Pardoned?.............Two Spirit

Some have heard of Private Eddie Slovik. In WWII, he was tried as a deserter, and shot by firing squad. He was the first soldier killed as a deserter since the Civil War, and the last to have been given that punishment. Of over 20,000 troops that were convicted of desertion in WWII, and 49 of which were sentenced to death, only Pvt. Slovik was executed.

It was known throughout his time in the Army that Pvt. Slovik had an adversion to guns. His commander in Texas even made the statement that as a soldier, he did not measure up. Instead of being placed in a support role though, Pvt. Slovik was sent to Europe as a rifleman. Shortly after his arrival, he was seperated from his unit. When he was finally returned to his unit, he deserted the next day, only to turn himself in the following day, with a signed declaration that if ordered into combat, he would desert again.

At Pvt. Slovik's trial, the paper he signed was the primary evidence against him. His defense lawyer had no arguements to use against the signed statement, and within two hours of closing arguements, Slovik was found guilty and sentenced to death.

He made an appeal to General Eisenhower for his life, but Ike dictated that the execution be carried out as an example.

Since the end of WWII, there has been much discussion over the execution of Private Slovik. There has been a push on to have him posthumously pardoned. This effort has included his late wife, his legal defense, some who witnessed his execution, nand many veterans that served in Europe.

Before you make your own decision on whether or not he should be pardoned, I ask that you look at the following links.

Date: 1/31/2005 8:18:00 PM  From Authorid: 62100    Okay, I read them all and my gut reaction remains, there is NO way that this man should have been executed..he definitely deserves a posthumous pardon..sometimes some things like this just make you wonder about the judgement of our so-called "leaders"..absolutely despicable!!
Date: 1/31/2005 8:23:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 47296    Xylanthia, when I first saw the movie, I had mixed emotions over his execution. At that time though,it was hard to do any research on it. Now though, having read numerous accounts of his time in the service, his trial, and his subsequent execution, I agree that there is noy way he should have been executed. Given the weight of evidence from his time in Texas, he should have never been assigned to a combat unit. This was a serious injustice, that now deserves to be corrected.
Date: 1/31/2005 8:31:00 PM  From Authorid: 62100    Absolutely..first of all, he was not enlisted..and had in fact been turned down when he tried to do so because of his criminal record..then, because they were in need they decide that he is good enough to have after all?? Of course, because he was just to be a guinea pig..another body to put on the lines, and if he died..so what, he was just a small time petty criminal anyway..then he refused to fight. They could have given him some other type of position, but instead they charge him and execute him..not for example in my opinion, but to prove a point..the point being that he was called up because it was probable that he would die anyway, and since he wasn't willing to fight..they killed him...tragic case.
Date: 2/1/2005 8:25:00 AM  From Authorid: 13119    I agree that he shouldn't have been executed and for that he should have a pardon but he should still have the record show that he went AWOL, not deserted because he did come back the very next day but definitely AWOL. He did show bravery in front of the firing squad but he also handed in a letter stating that he would desert if sent to the front lines. They should have put him in jail for a period of time and then into the rear echelon. He didn't deserve death but he doesn't deserve to have his whole record stricken.
Date: 2/7/2005 2:36:00 PM  From Authorid: 16671    No he shouldnt have been executed. I can't believe something like this happened. Ya know some people just can't handle some stuff and they shouldnt be forced into it. This is just so sad.
