according to ancient folklore...
It is said that a curandera in mexican tradition is not really a bruja (witch). she has the ability to do both white and black magic, if you called upon them correctly they would grant your spell, but if you evoked them wrongly they would turn the spell against you, and you would die. legend has it that they had harnessed the power to shape-shift, in order to travel great distances when summoned.
This power could only be achieved at night, as after midnight they would transform themself into the lechusa. this creature was that of an owls body approximatly 4ft tall, with a wingspan of 9 feet, the face was still that of the curandera woman, although the eyes glowed red, and the lips were streched back showing charred gums and the teeth of the devil, their claws were sharp as knives, and frothing yellowed muccas dripped from its very nostrals.
In order to call them out to cast your spell, you must tie seven knots in a rope, with every knot twisted you must chant your spell (such as a love spell, money, happiness, even revenge). if you are brave enough to continue, you now must untie the knots as you chant the spell backwards.
Legend has it that should you make a mistake during calling them out, the spell would turn against you, as the curse of the lechusa would come for you instead! It would attack without being heard, as suddenly it rips the flesh from your face completely off, with only the skeletal bone structure left, oozing bloody pus. it next would claw at your heart, as it rips it clear out of your panicking chest, and carries it dripping, yet still beating, off into the night.
The only protection known against the lechusa is a clover under your tounge, a white virgin candle lit, a perfume of suerti (luck) and a rosary in hand. even then the lechusa can find ways of getting you.
To this day if there is a rasp at the door or window after midnight i will not go outside or check beyond the curtains, for fear that it may be the lechusa.
...they have been seen all the more in falfurrias texas...
