Can you walk w/ a broken ankle?

I fell yesterday b/c my foot was asleep and I had absolutly no feeling when I got up. Ever since then my ankle has been killing me. I thought I just sprained it at first, b/c I could still walk. But now it's swollen, even though I put ice on it, it hurts just to put alot of pressure on it, and I'm kind of limping when I walk. Can you walk if you have a broken ankle, or are then all signs of spraining. I've had a broken foot before, and it feels like lots of the same signs, only it didn't swell up or anything right away.

Halloween is Right around the corner.. .

Date: 9/7/2005 7:28:00 AM  From Authorid: 8817    I tripped a few years back while doing piggy back races>.< (that's a whole nother story) however I ended up ripped the tendons in my ankle. My ankle swelled up about 5 times the normal size and I had to get it wrapped and so on and so forth for it to heal. But me being the stubborn person I am . I not only walked on my ankle after it hapened but I also drove my behind to the emergency while driving a stick for an hour..Not the smartest move but it shows that even when u totally mess up your ankle u can stillwalk on it. You just may cause some damages that may not go away if you do not get it looked at.
Date: 9/7/2005 7:43:00 AM  From Authorid: 7574    I broke the growth plate in my ankle, and everyone believed it was just a sprain. I went to the doctor and it didn't show up on the x-rays (because apparently, they don't really ever show up too well) and they told me to just go home and walk on it. After about a week of that, I went back in agony and they decided that I had broken it and casted me. My ankle still bothers me, like 10 years later. It's always making weird noises.
Date: 9/7/2005 8:45:00 AM  From Authorid: 63191    It is possible to have a small break and still walk with pain. Best thing to do is go to the ER and get it checked out. No way of knowing without an XRay and you don't want to leave it untreated because it could cause BIG problems for you later if it is broken now. USMOM
Date: 9/7/2005 8:58:00 AM  ( Chatmin-PB )   I broke my ankle about 6 years ago. And I was able to walk..it was difficult and very very painful....two days later I went to the emergency department...because it just got more sore every day and started to swll. It turned out i had broke my ankle....
Date: 9/7/2005 9:11:00 AM  From Authorid: 4548    fell down some steps and i waited 2 weeks to get my ankle xrayed. i was trying to walk on it and everything. it turned out both bones were shattered lol. have it looked at just in case.
Date: 9/7/2005 9:16:00 AM  From Authorid: 15157    It depends on how you injured it...I say no you cannot walk on a broken ankle...but then some bad sprains have the same symthoms of a broken ankle...is it black an blue?...See you Dr...asap
Date: 9/7/2005 9:44:00 AM  From Authorid: 14754    well i broke my ankle 8 yrs ago...and i could not walk on it..it was badly broken and i had to have surgery...i guess it all depends on how bad it is broken..you could of slightly fractured it...you need to go to the doctor and get it xrayed.
Date: 9/7/2005 10:24:00 AM  From Authorid: 63161    I was in a car accident with my boyfriend last year and i didn't know something happened to my ankle until he took me out of the car and i tried to walk, we got rushed to the emergency and the doctor was puzzled, i got x-rays and he said it isnt broke and it isnt sprained, he said it is just an injury, and it was the same as yours, it was swollen, bruised, hard to walk on, i put ice and it would only work for a few, i have the pictures at home of it, it sounds like the same thing, if you asked a doctor, he might say its just a injury because the doctor told me it wasnt a sprain or a broken ankle so he just called it an injury, he said it was weird because he never had someone come in before like that at all.. I was the first.. Hope i helped..
Date: 9/7/2005 10:24:00 AM  From Authorid: 63161    P.S. now its fine, it stopped hurting fully after almost a month.... Hope yours is better soon..
Date: 9/7/2005 11:29:00 AM  From Authorid: 39043    i stepped in a hole and twisted it really bad one yr...then a couple of yrs later i stepped in another hole and totally messed it up. It was swolen 5 times its original size and i went to the hospital they took x-rays of both feet and found something on the one i hurt..it is a black spot..looks like where a bone should be but there isn't one there. they sent me home..never called me back in..i walked on it..i ended up in another hole and it swelled up real big again..i say the 2nd time i did it i broke it..i still walk on it now..it isn't fully healed..i have a bone sticking out on the left side of my right foot (bad foot)..looks like i have 2 ankles lol and the other side where the ankle is it sometimes swells...i trip a when i walk..my ankle will give out and it looks like i trip over my own feet..or it will twist when i walk or i'll pull a muscle..its a mess lol
Date: 9/7/2005 11:30:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 28270    thanks
Date: 9/7/2005 1:00:00 PM  From Authorid: 49689    You can...There was a soccer player that played with a broken leg(the name escapes me) and other people who have played sports with fractured bones..although it would be difficult and you would have to have an above normal tolerance to pain..I would suggest that you get it x-rayed,before it starts to heal....
Date: 9/7/2005 1:18:00 PM  From Authorid: 4887    I think it was last year... I was holding my daughter cause she was running around, and we were trying to go somewhere, and I was going down a little hill, when I lost my balance and fell forward, twisting my ankle. I had tears in my eyes from the pain, and I actually got a bruise around my ankle. The dr thought that it was actually broke, cause it was SO swollen. It still hurts every now and then. But, I wasn't able to walk for a whole week. And I couldn't walk without limping for maybe a whole month. Ya, it was bad Thank goodness for pain killers LOL
