The case of Genie, A Feral Child

My daughter learned about this in health class. I never heard of it and thought it was interesting..

*Genie is not her real name, her real identity has been hidden for legal reasons.

Genie lived 13 years of her life in a Los Angeles suburb with her mother, her father and her older brother. When Genie was one, her Grandmother on her father's side died and they all moved into her old house. Her father insisted they leave his mothers room untouched even though this meant they all had to sleep in the living room. All except Genie who was given the back room. This room wasn't furnished or decorated and was away from the rest of the house.

During the day time Genie was kept tied to a potty chair and during the night time she slept in a caged crib, tied into a straight jacket so she could not move around. They did not potty train her, they did not teach her to speak, they did not love her, she had no stimulation whatsoever and she lived this way for 12 years. What's more in order to keep her quiet her father would growl at her from behind the door, like a dog and sometimes he would beat her with a stick….

No talking was allowed at all near the girl. Her older brother was charged with feeding her, but he was not allowed to talk to her. She was given only baby food and ceral.

Genie had other siblings. A sister was placed in the garage when she was two and a half months old because her crying disturbed her father. She died of pnemonia. A brother died when he was two days old from supposedly choking on his own saliva.

Her father believed she was mentally retarded although she was completly normal at birth according to hospital records.

When Genie's mother was 50 and her father was 70, her mother took her and ran away. Her mother was almost completely blind and she went to seek help from social services. This was on November 25, 1970. Social services took one look at Genie and called the police. Genie's parents were charged with child abuse. Her mother went to court and was found not guilty, partly because she eventually took her to get help and partly because she was also subject to abuse by her husband, she was a blind, nervous women and apparently couldn't do anything to help…. Genie's father shot himself a week before he was due in court. He left a note saying 'the world will never understand'.

Integrating Genie into society was a huge and difficult task. She would spit and scratch herself if she got upset, she was not potty trained. It wasn't understood why she drooled constantly and spat on herself, but her dress was always soaked from this habit. She had no idea of the social norms which govern society. She had grown up in almost total isolation and was unable to speak at all. At first she could only walk hunched over due to the years spent strapped to the chair and kept in the cage-like crib. Eventually she learned to walk upright, but always walked with a limp. She couldn't chew and was severely malnourished because of the years spent being fed only baby food and cereal. When she was admitted to the hospital, she was 54 inches tall and weighed only 62 pounds…..

Genie's case attracted a lot of attention because it gave scientists the chance to to test the Critical Period Hypothesis. A theory proposed by a linguist called Lenneberg's (1967). This is the hypothesis that humans are unable to correctly learn the use of grammar after early childhood because of the lateralization of the brain. Children who have grown up in situations similar to Genie have been the only way scientists have been able to test this and there are few other cases (notable exceptions include the case of the 'chicken girl' and the Wild boy of Avelon). If Genie was able to learn language then this would disprove the theories of Noam Chomsky who argued that language was innate to all humans.

A number of people were assigned to support Genie including Susan Curtis and Jean Butler. Once Genie was discharged from hospital she went to live with Jean for a short period and then with David Riggler and his family, where she stayed for four years. Jean Butler never forgave them for taking Genie away from her. The Rigglers changed their life for Genie and helped her immensely. Alongside Susan Curtiss they taught her how to speak, encouraged her to use sign language as well and most importantly gave her much needed love.

However, although Genie learned some vocabulary, she did not acquire language as hoped, she could not master grammar. It remains unclear as to whether her inability to acquire language was due to the fact that she had missed her critical period or because of the severe trauma she had suffered. All she was able to master were two and sometimes three word sentences.

Those assigned to care for Genie fought over her best interests and who should look after her. She was pushed from place to place and she never really settled anywhere. Her mother had a cataract operation and eventually got her back, but could not handle her, she was then placed in the care of a number of foster families and finally into residential care where she remains today. To make things worse Genie was abused in one of her care homes…. Today she resides in a home for adults; she no longer speaks or uses any signs…..

If you would like to know more about Genie, enter Genie and language into Google and you will get back a lot of hits. There is also a film called 'Mockingbird Don't Sing' which details this case although they have changed Genie's name to Katie. Susan Curtiss' thesis written on Genie, which is one of the only published thesis in the world is also available from most good libraries.

Date: 10/29/2005 5:44:00 PM  From Authorid: 62100    I think that there was also a movie based on this girl that starred Jodie Foster....if it wasn't based on Genie it was awfully close..
Date: 10/29/2005 5:48:00 PM  From Authorid: 62100    OK..checked IMDB..It's called "Nell" and it's close but not the same this is the synopsis of that one (credit given to author..found at IMDB)
"Nell is raised in the remote backwoods of North Carolina, never having met anyone except her mother. When her mother finally dies, Nell must confront the outside world. Since her mother's speech was distorted by a stroke, Nell has never heard real English spoken and has developed her own unintelligible language. Nice country doctor Jerome Lovell wants to help Nell adjust in her own protected surroundings, while psychology student Paula Olsen and her heartless boss Alexander Paley want to study this rare 'wild child' in their laboratory. But how long can Nell's world remain isolated?

Date: 10/29/2005 5:49:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 15228    Can you imagine what her life must have been like? Think about it. Day after day, year after year, she had absolutely no human contact, strapped to a chair or tied into a straight-jacket--what kind of state was her brain in? She couldn't use her imagination to escape since she knew nothing of the world. Imagine the boredom, nothing to look forward to...her world was nothing at all.
Date: 10/29/2005 5:51:00 PM  From Authorid: 20296    okie...google search brough up a lot about the genie diaper pail and genie garage door opener. is there a link you used??LOL

Date: 10/29/2005 5:58:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 15228    Admin, I can guess what part
Date: 10/29/2005 5:58:00 PM  From Authorid: 62100    Kelly..I read a book for a sociological book report once (for Sociology class obvilusly LOL) and it was written by a woman who had been born to a Korean girl who had fallen for an American GI..when her mother had become pregnant with her she had dishonored her family and when she returned home after her GI man left without her they insisted that she must kill the baby because she had dishonored the family by having a mixed race baby..she refused and eventually her family beat the woman to death and left the daughter at an orphanage..at the orphanage they kept this girl in almost the same conditions as what you describe until she was eventually adopted by an American couple..she talked about the impact this had upon her in her later life in the book..it was heartbreaking...
Date: 10/29/2005 5:59:00 PM  From Authorid: 62100    Yeah joe..either class would have probably showed that film cause it works on both levels...

good info

Date: 10/29/2005 6:03:00 PM  From Authorid: 7574    Oh wow..I'd never heard of this before.
Date: 10/29/2005 6:05:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 15228    Xylanthia, I know that is exactly what the orphanages did in Korea! When I was stationed in Korea my post adopted a nearby orphanage for older children..we put in plumbing and brought the kids to post for Thanksgiving and Christmas. I asked what they did with the infants and was told they were in a "special" orphanage...where they were kept in cribs all day, bottles were propped and workers weren't allowed to talk or hold the babies. Shocked, I asked why and was told it was because there was no reason for these children to get attached to a care taker! That bothered me so much and I always hoped it wasn't really true. Must have bothered my Sergeant Major also because he adopted about 5 of the orphans.
Date: 10/29/2005 6:10:00 PM  From Authorid: 3835    I have read about this case of Genie before, and I have also read about other similar cases of abused children whose parents really did not want them. It is extremely sad and loathsome this happens to children (or anyone, really) at all. To be honest, I would rather understand more that a woman have an abortion, than to go full term and have this happen to the child when they become aware, especially if it is a repeat incident within any same family. In my opinion, that is more humane to abort.. Genie must have been born into one of those families that did not believe in abortion, and had to pay the ultimate costs of that decision.. with abuse of many kinds.. and I am not really one to side with abortion, unless it is an absolute necessity.
Date: 10/29/2005 6:19:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 15228    Surf5, this took place in the 60's, I doubt whether someone believing in abortion or not had any part in the decision to carry these babies to term--abortion wasn't exactly common than. Even with abortion we have plenty of abused, unwanted children around, such as the baby recently who was left for two weeks alone. What was stopping that woman from giving the child up for adoption? Absolutely nothing except plain---can't even think of a word for the woman. I'm sure even someone as ignorant as her knew one call to social services would have gotten the baby off her hands.
Date: 10/29/2005 6:20:00 PM  From Authorid: 62100    Yup, you described it exactly as the woman did..gosh I wish I could remember the name of the book now...this poor woman went through sooo much..when she was adopted there was no integration time..she was taken to the airport with a social worker, flown to the US and at the destination airport was literally plopped into her new parents arms, not knowing who they were nor knowing any English...
Date: 10/29/2005 6:38:00 PM  From Authorid: 30786    I don't know what to say other than I am so horrified of what some people are capable of doing to others in this world. It is just indescribable. I just heard of a case recently where a foster family with a bunch of kids had them living in stacked cages
Date: 10/29/2005 8:05:00 PM  From Authorid: 7830    this is very sad. these child abuse stories tear me up.
Date: 10/29/2005 8:36:00 PM  From Authorid: 61977    You really do not have the story factually explained here, well not in detail anyway. I know of the case. It is quite sad indeed. What is really sad is how once the research funds ran out no one wanted to care for her anymore. Good post though. Thanks Kelly.
Date: 10/29/2005 9:45:00 PM  From Authorid: 15394    We studied this story in both of my psych classes... very interesting, and reinforcement of the "window of opportunity" for learning in young children... I know a child that had a bad situation during that "window" and he does not speak well nor learn well to this day... gave me new respect for child workers that push young children that are not speaking when they "should" into some kind of therapy for speech... very sad and very interesting
Date: 10/30/2005 6:51:00 AM  From Authorid: 28848    I've read about her story before. There are others like her. I've found some of their stories online. I wish I could remember the link.
Date: 10/31/2005 8:52:00 PM  From Authorid: 28946    That is awful!!! I( knew a baby needed love and stimuli to grow and cannot understand why these things can happen here in America. I am glad that some people were able to help Genie until she was abused again. Just awful for that poor child...
