I think that there was also a movie based on this girl that starred Jodie Foster....if it wasn't based on Genie it was awfully close.. |

OK..checked IMDB..It's called "Nell" and it's close but not the same this is the synopsis of that one (credit given to author..found at IMDB) "Nell is raised in the remote backwoods of North Carolina, never having met anyone except her mother. When her mother finally dies, Nell must confront the outside world. Since her mother's speech was distorted by a stroke, Nell has never heard real English spoken and has developed her own unintelligible language. Nice country doctor Jerome Lovell wants to help Nell adjust in her own protected surroundings, while psychology student Paula Olsen and her heartless boss Alexander Paley want to study this rare 'wild child' in their laboratory. But how long can Nell's world remain isolated?
Summary written by Reid Gagle"

Can you imagine what her life must have been like? Think about it. Day after day, year after year, she had absolutely no human contact, strapped to a chair or tied into a straight-jacket--what kind of state was her brain in? She couldn't use her imagination to escape since she knew nothing of the world. Imagine the boredom, nothing to look forward to...her world was nothing at all. |

Kelly..I read a book for a sociological book report once (for Sociology class obvilusly LOL) and it was written by a woman who had been born to a Korean girl who had fallen for an American GI..when her mother had become pregnant with her she had dishonored her family and when she returned home after her GI man left without her they insisted that she must kill the baby because she had dishonored the family by having a mixed race baby..she refused and eventually her family beat the woman to death and left the daughter at an orphanage..at the orphanage they kept this girl in almost the same conditions as what you describe until she was eventually adopted by an American couple..she talked about the impact this had upon her in her later life in the book..it was heartbreaking... |

Xylanthia, I know that is exactly what the orphanages did in Korea! When I was stationed in Korea my post adopted a nearby orphanage for older children..we put in plumbing and brought the kids to post for Thanksgiving and Christmas. I asked what they did with the infants and was told they were in a "special" orphanage...where they were kept in cribs all day, bottles were propped and workers weren't allowed to talk or hold the babies. Shocked, I asked why and was told it was because there was no reason for these children to get attached to a care taker! That bothered me so much and I always hoped it wasn't really true. Must have bothered my Sergeant Major also because he adopted about 5 of the orphans. |

I have read about this case of Genie before, and I have also read about other similar cases of abused children whose parents really did not want them. It is extremely sad and loathsome this happens to children (or anyone, really) at all. To be honest, I would rather understand more that a woman have an abortion, than to go full term and have this happen to the child when they become aware, especially if it is a repeat incident within any same family. In my opinion, that is more humane to abort.. Genie must have been born into one of those families that did not believe in abortion, and had to pay the ultimate costs of that decision.. with abuse of many kinds.. and I am not really one to side with abortion, unless it is an absolute necessity. |

Surf5, this took place in the 60's, I doubt whether someone believing in abortion or not had any part in the decision to carry these babies to term--abortion wasn't exactly common than. Even with abortion we have plenty of abused, unwanted children around, such as the baby recently who was left for two weeks alone. What was stopping that woman from giving the child up for adoption? Absolutely nothing except plain---can't even think of a word for the woman. I'm sure even someone as ignorant as her knew one call to social services would have gotten the baby off her hands. |

Yup, you described it exactly as the woman did..gosh I wish I could remember the name of the book now...this poor woman went through sooo much..when she was adopted there was no integration time..she was taken to the airport with a social worker, flown to the US and at the destination airport was literally plopped into her new parents arms, not knowing who they were nor knowing any English... |

I don't know what to say other than I am so horrified of what some people are capable of doing to others in this world. It is just indescribable. I just heard of a case recently where a foster family with a bunch of kids had them living in stacked cages |

You really do not have the story factually explained here, well not in detail anyway. I know of the case. It is quite sad indeed. What is really sad is how once the research funds ran out no one wanted to care for her anymore. Good post though. Thanks Kelly. |

We studied this story in both of my psych classes... very interesting, and reinforcement of the "window of opportunity" for learning in young children... I know a child that had a bad situation during that "window" and he does not speak well nor learn well to this day... gave me new respect for child workers that push young children that are not speaking when they "should" into some kind of therapy for speech... very sad and very interesting |

That is awful!!! I( knew a baby needed love and stimuli to grow and cannot understand why these things can happen here in America. I am glad that some people were able to help Genie until she was abused again. Just awful for that poor child... |
