CABBAGE PATCH KIDS

Growing up inGeorge, Xavier Roberts loved the artwork of the Appalachians - illustrations and carvings of round-faced children in rustic clothing. He also grew up hearing how new babies were found in cabbage patches - a tale as old as America itself.

As an adult, Roberts fondly remembered the stories of his youth and was convinced that other people would find the designs and folktale charming as well. In 1977, turning his art gallery into the Babyland General Hospital, Roberts put his handmade, round-cheeked dolls he called Little People on display. They weren't sold, they were adopted. Each doll had its own name, each came with a certificate of adoption, and the salespeople dressed as doctors and nurses.

Roberts' "Cabbage Patch Dolls" were a smash, and in 1983 Coleco Industries arranged to distribute them nationwide. By then the dolls were being made by machine in Hong Kong, their distinctive features controlled by a computer. But that didn't do anything to slow down the demand. To the contrary, demand far exceeded supply, creating an unprecedented shortage during the 1983 Christmas season. Coleco sold 60 million dollars worth of the dolls that year, and by 1985 over half a billion dollars in sales had been generated by the puffy-faced kids.

Ironically, Coleco wen't belly-up shortly there-after, unable to recover from the staggering losses incurred by a disastrous foray into the personal computer market.

Today, Mattel continues to license the dolls and related products.

Date: 11/4/2005 3:34:00 PM  From Authorid: 31535    I used to have a cabbage patch kid! Her name was Rebecca, and ironically I named my own daughter that! I didn't even remember the dolls name till recently....my daughter is almost 5...so I must have subconciously named her after that beloved raven-haired doll!! Since I have 3 younger sisters, they also had them too...each with matching hair. I remember when the ones with the cornsilky hair came out, and when they started making some of them all plastic, for the pool! ~MEMORIES~ lol. Thanks for this post

Date: 11/5/2005 3:46:00 AM  From Authorid: 59876    i still have my cabbage patch kids along with the home made doll baby kids. i opened a box in the garage a couple of months ago and found a fully dressed cabbage patch clown doll, a little preemie baby boy, a cabbage patch dog? and two doll babies that my aunt made for my brother and i.
Date: 11/5/2005 7:56:00 AM  From Authorid: 48809    Oh yes, I used to make clothes for these dolls and made the most adorable fancy clothes for them! I finished all the seams too. I sold a ton of these little clothes and even made red or Green velvet coats with white fur collars and around the wrists and lined with white silk . These were made exactly as if I was making clothes for a person.I also made red flannel pajamas with the little "drop seat" and little housecoats too. I loved doing it!lol.
Date: 11/16/2005 12:29:00 AM  From Authorid: 28946    I remember standing in line to get my child a Cabbage Patch Doll and watching women slug each other over dolls. I got one but only because of a raincheck and still there were women fighting over the few dolls left for even that. I happened to get a cute one that was just what my daughter wanted and think she still has "andrea" around and that doll is 22 years old.
