Some 2000-years ago,the story goes,while Christ was on the cross, a blind Roman Centurion called Longinus (aka Gaius Cassius) plunged his spear into Christ's side.(Accounts differ as to whether this was to see if He was still alive, or part of the exectution process).The blood that dripped down from the resulting wound found it's way into the eyes of Longinus and cured him of his blindness. Ever since the spear has been regarded as a great religious relic of great power.The Spear of Longinus is also known as the Spear of Destiny, the Heilige Lance,the Spear of Mauritius,the Spear of Hofsburg, and the Spear of the Holy Grail. This story was popularized by the writings of Trevor Ravenscroft, but there are many other claims associated with the spear.Some claim that it has existed since the beginning of time, others insist it was made by the Hebrew prophet Phineas.There are also stories associated with it's owners, amoung whom are listed: Joshua,Saul,Herod the Great,Longinus,Constantine,Justinian,the Merovingian Kings,Charlemagne and various Saxon Kings.Eventually it found it's way into the hands of the Hapsburgs of Austria. Today, all that remains of the spear is a damaged head held togather by gold,silver & bronze threads which also bind it to an alleged nail from the True Cross.The shaft is long gone. Perhaps greater impact than the relic itself is the legand that whoever wields the spear holds the balance of world power. This has been demonstrated,by previous owners who,in,battle won great victories. It was also believed that the loss of the spear was fatal. According to legand, Charlemagne dropped it & died instantly, as did Frederick Barbarossa. One of the most famous owners was also among the most recient.Adolf Hitler.Hitler first saw the spear in 1909 and had a vision that he could rule the world with it in his possession. In 1938 Hitler obtained the spear from the Hapsburg Treasure House & the Hofburg Museum in Vienna. It was said to be amoung Hitler's most prized possessions & that he could not be defeated until he lost possession of the spear. It is a fact that advancing American troops discovered it in a tunnel beneath Nuremburg on April 30, 1945 at about the same time that Hitler took his own life. Under direct orders from then general Eisenhower,the spear was returned to the Hofburg Museum in Vienna, where it still resides,kept under lock and key.It should be noted that during the time America had the spear in American hands,atomic bombs were successfully dropped on Hiroshima & Nagaski, successfully ending the Second World War. Some aspects of the spear are contradictory.For instance, even though it's loss is suppose to bring instant death,Longinus (who must have lost it at some point) is suppose to be doomed to walk the earth until the Apocalypse.A curse which can only be broken if he is slain by another wielding the spear. Two ambitious men tried & failed to acquire the spear,and failed ,also, in their quest for world domination. The spear was hidden from Napoleon,and when Keiser Willhelm attempted to "borrow" the spear for an "exhibition" his request was denied.
