Symbols..> They are so pretty, I will wear it!

MmmmmmmmmmmmmmmKay!

The Cross, the pentagram - Want to wear one? Go ahead, but shouldnt you know what they mean first before wearing one? If you simply think "Hey, sure looks pretty, let me put this beautiful thing around my neck" - and then later find out that it is, for example, a swastika - you are in for a real rude awakening.

If you are "Happy Jesus Pray the Lord" - wouldnt you feel funny wearing the pentagram?

If you are "Happy Goddess's/Gods - you may not feel so funny about wearing the cross since its roots are held there first... but the typical generic christian cross might not be fitting for you...

"What a pretty goats head!" - meanwhile you have 16 kids, a conversion van, and attend church every sunday, monday, tuesday, wednesday, thursday, friday - and a lil study on saturday - I think your going to be in for a rude awakeing when you realizing your wearing a symbol of satanism.

All I request is that people research and understand the symbols that they wear on their bodies. If you think it looks pretty - that is perfectly fine, but symbology is a very important thing and we should atleast understand our symbols.

So, what do you think about wearing something without knowing its purpose/meaning?

Date: 11/19/2006 3:11:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 63194    FYI ""What a pretty goats head!" - meanwhile you have 16 kids, a conversion van, and attend church every sunday, monday, tuesday, wednesday, thursday, friday - and a lil study on saturday - I think your going to be in for a rude awakeing when you realizing your wearing a symbol of satanism." was a stereotypical joke in good humor.
Date: 11/19/2006 3:12:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 63194    Well, if its a squiggly.. perhaps. Look at it like an intellectual property in a way.
Date: 11/19/2006 3:13:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 63194    It looks good, me wears it - okay that is great. But, it has a meaning. It doesnt matter if its understood to be a certain way by society or not - ... the "I am non-comformant" movement doesnt fly, because its full of fakes.
Date: 11/19/2006 3:13:00 PM  From Authorid: 13969    the way I've come to deal with that sort of thing is that it only means what I believe it means.
Date: 11/19/2006 3:14:00 PM  From Authorid: 13969    Yeah, but not everybody is gonna attach the same meaning to it. that's where it gets complicated
Date: 11/19/2006 3:14:00 PM  From Authorid: 13969    LOL
Date: 11/19/2006 3:14:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 63194    But by that logic, if I think the swatstika looks good then I should wear it. (I dont, and I think its a symbol of stupidity)
Date: 11/19/2006 3:15:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 63194    "widely accepted" is a key point though - "OH, it doesnt mean anything to ME" - I understand that quite well..but, for example, a really pretty symbol is made... imagine that its awesome and fun to look at and you want one, but, for hundreds.. maybe even thousands of years it stands for rape.
Date: 11/19/2006 3:16:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 63194    But, because you think it looks good it should something you want to wear? Even though its meaning AT its "creation" was to stand for rape?
Date: 11/19/2006 3:16:00 PM  From Authorid: 63026    Well In the Da Vinci Code, If you remember talked about symbolism. Like The Nazi Swazicta, and other things people considered evil. But these actual symbols were once considered good. It's all we perceive them.
Date: 11/19/2006 3:17:00 PM  From Authorid: 13969    Yeah well you do have a point there. I wouldn't wear one that was so negative on a widespread basis, but you know there's folks like that. Is hiding under sheets representative of ghosts, or the KKK? hmmmm
Date: 11/19/2006 3:17:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 63194    And Psyguy, I DO understand what you are saying - but it varies by region, if you will.
Date: 11/19/2006 3:17:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 63194    Yes, but generally there are some variances in some of the symbols. Posiedons symbol doesnt really look like the traditional devils fork.
Date: 11/19/2006 3:18:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 63194    SG, lol - with a pointed hood in the United States - I would say it stands for KKK - but a simple sheet over the head is a ghost for halloween - but like psy said, some things mean different things. Preists in mexico I believe wear hoods that look like the things the KKK wear.
Date: 11/19/2006 3:20:00 PM  From Authorid: 13969    Now, what if there's 2 widespread meanings behind someting. one good, one bad. What then?
Date: 11/19/2006 3:20:00 PM  From Authorid: 15675    I agree. Whether or not you believe or know in them symbols do hold a lot of power for what they reprsent. There have been stories lately of Wal Mart 'accidentally' selling clothing with the Nazi skull on it, as well as White suprimcist numbers. They said they'd take them down but so far 'havent'.

Id like to extend this annoyance especially to young stupid girls (think Britney Spears and her 'strange' tattoo...meant to be mysterious...) who get tattoos of what 'looks cool' usually in another language or not knowing any meaning behind a symbol. When I got my 2 tattoos (one in Japanese, one in Greek) I researched the meanings until I was sure those were the true meanings. I was relieved when I met a girl from Japan and she read my tattoo as I meant it to be .

Date: 11/19/2006 3:20:00 PM  From Authorid: 63026    I see alot of necklaces though and the pennants, and I'm like why would people where that. But Im more laid back on things, so it don't matter to me what people do, as long as their happy with their lives.
Date: 11/19/2006 3:21:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 63194    I agree Kaja
Date: 11/19/2006 3:21:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 63194    That would create a dilemna, SG - what symbol though?
Date: 11/19/2006 3:23:00 PM  From Authorid: 13969    I dunno Ben. I was just being in a strangely hypothetical mood. lol
Date: 11/19/2006 3:28:00 PM  From Authorid: 62927    Caught red handed. I bike and thought those helmets were really cool. So I bought one and wore it for a year, till I had a history class that went into hitler and graphically what happened to the jews. I dropped the $100 dollar bikers helmet in the closest dumpster I could find-- the humor was no longer there!!
Date: 11/19/2006 3:38:00 PM  From Authorid: 30747    I kinda see where your coming from but I would think that people would not be THAT stupid. But then again I remember when I was 15 and went to Italy I bought a cross and had it blessed by the pope. I was actaully a southern baptist but heck...this was the pope man. When I wore the cross to church one of the elders pointed out it was a "catholic" cross. Oh reaally? I had no idea there was a difference. I'm still not totally convinced.
Date: 11/19/2006 4:13:00 PM  From Authorid: 62998    I only wear a Pentacle and I know what it means. The point going upwards means "Spirit". The other 4 points mean: Earth, Air, Fire, and Water. When combined they are the embodiment of life. This differs from the inverted Pentagram used by Satanists with the point downward, called the Sigil of Baphomet and usually has an overlay of a goats head, sometimes not.
Date: 11/19/2006 4:21:00 PM  From Authorid: 7830    "what a pretty goat's head" LMAO!!!
Date: 11/19/2006 4:34:00 PM  From Authorid: 46527    I wear a pentagram, I also have one tattooed on my body. There is no way that I would have such a permanent mark without fully knowing what my symbol meant.
Date: 11/19/2006 4:54:00 PM  From Authorid: 64123    With your scnerios I don't think they matter so much if someone is wearing a piece merely for their like of the design and not understanding the meaning. People can and will wear what they find attractive for whatever reason and without concern for what it could suggest. That being said however, they shouldn't be shocked if someone makes a comment on the piece because the symbol holds a greater meaning to that other person. And usually, having someone comment will be unavoidable. ~PurpleSkies~
Date: 11/19/2006 5:05:00 PM  From Authorid: 19613    I think more damage is done when people attatch meanings to symbols like the swastika for example. You can find the swastika all over the place, like the Greek pottery I'm studying atm.
Date: 11/19/2006 6:44:00 PM  From Authorid: 2030    sysbols take on new meanings all the time based on what someone attaches to them. Guess folks should have copyrighted back then.
Date: 11/19/2006 7:04:00 PM  From Authorid: 11240    Just curious, Ben. How do reconcile religions using symbols for their own, but have issues with religions using words "for their own"? God Bless.
Date: 11/19/2006 7:08:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 63194    Okay Deb, guess I worded the original question wrong... ummm... Basically I feel that even if you want to wear something because you think it is pretty, you should atleast take the effort to find out what it means. As for the other thing, it was a question of whether religions feel they own terms.
Date: 11/19/2006 7:09:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 63194    ... and I also think words are more common than symbols
Date: 11/19/2006 7:31:00 PM  From Authorid: 62998    I have one tattoo, but the meaning isn't what what the symbol is intended to be. For me, the symbol that I have tattooed on my arm, the biohazard symbol, is more of a defiant symbol than anything else. You can have a look if you missed it here http://www.inthenooz.com/joestat.jpg or here http://www.unsolvedmysteries.com/usm465605.html
Date: 11/19/2006 8:22:00 PM  From Authorid: 33286    funny... the swastika has a 3000 year history... in most cases it is a symbol for good luck... you should check out the origins, it is only recently (since the nazis)that it has become a bad thing.
Date: 11/19/2006 8:23:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 63194    "funny... the swastika has a 3000 year history... in most cases it is a symbol for good luck... you should check out the origins, it is only recently (since the nazis)that it has become a bad thing." - agreed. HOWEVER, different symbols have different meanings throughout the world. If a symbol is offensive int he united states for example - such as the swatstika, because here it indeed is.. then I think one should atleast educate themselves on what symbols me what where.
Date: 11/19/2006 8:29:00 PM  From Authorid: 33286    "then I think one should atleast educate themselves on what symbols me what where. "...HUH?

Date: 11/19/2006 8:29:00 PM  From Authorid: 62998    The swastika was originally a Hindu symbol for good luck. It had nothing to do with Germany until Adolf Hitler took it for his symbol for the Nazi's. For almost 3K years, it was a benign symbol for peace and luck and in just a few years and 1 man turned it into a symbol of hate and destruction.
Date: 11/19/2006 8:30:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 63194    lol sorry.. on what symbols mean what where... eh.
Date: 11/19/2006 8:34:00 PM  From Authorid: 62998    History of the Swastika can be read here. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swastika

Date: 11/19/2006 11:02:00 PM  From Authorid: 59876    how very interesting. this has popped up in my life in several ways lately. here are two that curve the discussion a bit. 1. the local gangs are using baseball hats with certain college abbreviations on them to represent their gangs with made up meanings of their own, so basically they are ripping off someone else's symbol for themselves. in my area, this has become well enough known as to be widely accepted and is included in educating the community. it is still a ripoff of someone else's symbol, and yet through violence, numbers, and will, it is becoming widely accepted. 2. was a discussion of someone with a belief that prohibits the worshipping of other gods, but very much admired the design of a pagan god symbol. the question was, if the symbol hasn't any significance as a god to that person, but only as a beautiful design, then is it considered idolatry or art?

= Release me, its not a complaint, its an observation. Moongirl, high horse not so cool.

Date: 11/20/2006 6:03:00 AM  From Authorid: 2030    I've seen enough whining around here. This post does not qualify.
Date: 11/20/2006 6:05:00 AM  From Authorid: 59876    i quite agree bcar. i thought it was nice thatbeezleben has brought in a few fresh topics instead of rerunning the same old crap. not that there isn't new aspects to the same old same old on occasion, just not often enough to want to peruse it every day.
Date: 11/20/2006 7:18:00 AM  From Authorid: 11240    Well, in my dictionary, both "symbol" and "word" have in their definitions "a representation". So, I understand your idea about determining the "current" representation of a symbol if one wants to wear such a symbol. Can one "wear" a representation of a "word"? If you saw a guy with muscles bulging from every inch of his being, don't you think he is "wearing his representation" of the word "bodybuilder"? Don't bodybuilders "own" that word? I mean, you could technically call a reconstructive surgeon a "bodybuilder", but does that doctor want ownership of the word? Does the representation fit the situation? Yes. Does the situation fit the represention? That depends on whether the situation warrants same, and as each situation is unique and the players involved are beholden to a myriad of factors including mood, upbringing, past experiences, education, etc., etc., then I say about symbols and words, to each "their own". God Bless.
Date: 11/20/2006 7:40:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 63194    I agree Deb and I think I understand what you are saying.. Forgive my inability to communicate my thoughts/feelings coherently.. hehe. basically what i mean is that FAITH is a hot topic.. which is why I posted that debate. I mostly, if anything, was looking for a good debate topic.
Date: 11/20/2006 1:23:00 PM  From Authorid: 62823    Well...what a person wears (symbol wise) makes a strong statement about their character. There is a new symbol out there..maybe you've noticed...the "O" diamond pendant. This has been a hot symbol for a while now. Does anybody know what it represents or it is just an advertisment for Oxygen the TV show?
Date: 11/20/2006 1:26:00 PM  From Authorid: 62823    My understanding is that the symbol "O" represents eternity, the Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end.
Date: 11/20/2006 7:43:00 PM  From Authorid: 19586    Another one people are doing lately is the red bracelet for kabbalah (sp?)
Date: 11/20/2006 9:02:00 PM  From Authorid: 16671    I'm with you on this ben, many people are in for a rude awakening, spiritually I mean. Now I don't wear necklaces, I can't because of the way I was born and they don't hang right, and it bothers me. Many people do not believe that anything is tied to a piece of Jewlery, but to those of us that do believe in things "spiritual" and have learned what and where these come from, well I don't think especially any christian should wear anything without KNOWING about it first.
Date: 11/21/2006 7:16:00 AM  From Authorid: 62823    Very true. When you wear something you honor that symbol. In my faith as a Catholic we wear medals for specific reasons. First and foremost, to honor God and to venerate the Blessed Mother, Angels and Saints. Wearing a Cross honors Jesus. We believe that when people see you wearing a Cross they may take a moment and think of Christ and the sacrifice He made for mankind. In a way the Christian Cross is used for evangelization, but no words are spoken. The symbol speaks for itself.
Date: 11/21/2006 12:36:00 PM  From Authorid: 60685    You know what I think is funny, people who get chinesse symbols tattoed on them thinking it says one thing but actually says something else.
Date: 12/1/2006 9:16:00 PM  From Authorid: 55967    LOL!! "What a pretty goats' head!"
Date: 12/1/2006 10:33:00 PM  From Authorid: 55967    I guess another goat might think so...
