When I was 12 years old we moved into a large house in the city. I was excited because I was finally going to have my very own bedroom! I chose a room leading off a long hallway. There were two entrance doors to the room--one leading to the hall and one leading to the living room. Directly across the hall was the bathroom. After we had lived there about 2 months strange things started happening. The first thing we noticed was the hallway always being cold-- even though the house had forced-air heating. It could be the middle of summer, and that hallway would be ice cold! Then, if we went out somewhere, a light in one room or another would be on when we'd return. We'd ask each other, 'Who left the light on?' and just assume that one of us was absent-minded. Then one day I exited my room and turned out the light. About an hour later I returned to my room and the light was on!!!Another day I was in the kitchen and heard the dryer in the utility room turn on and start running. The strangest thing happened late one night when my father, brother and I were in the living room watching TV. I was sitting on sofa. Next to the sofa was a large, built-in bookcase. Suddenly, the books started to fall out of the bookcase, one by one. My brother and I just watched, dumbfounded. A few nights later the dictionary came flying out of the bookcase and landed in the middle of the living room floor, barely missing my brother who was sitting in front of the television! My father told a coworker about our experiences, who suggested we might have a poltergeist. We went to the library and got books to research the phenomenon and found out that poltergeist activity centers around young adolescents. We decided that I was the attraction for our playful visitor. From then on, any other strange events that happened were shrugged off as just bieng 'the ghost'. Remarkably, I don't remember ever feeling scared or anxious when these events occurred. One time my cousins and I even tried to conjure up the ghost. We congregated in my room, sat on the floor, and had a seance. With our eyes closed we all focused on allowing the ghost to reveal itself in some manner. Pretty soon a large handbag I had sitting on the floor in the corner of the room suddenly launched itself through the air, hitting the opposite wall with a loud 'BANG'! All my cousins ran out of the room screaming, leaving me there saying, 'Hey, wait a minute you guys! It's only the gh! ost!' More events happened, but they were basically the same mode of operation. Books flew out of bookcases and lights turned on and off. Occasionally a door would slam shut. It still never frightened me, after a while I became amused with the antics. The only time I remember being startled by the poltergeist's actions was when I was awakened in the middle of the night because my bedroom windows were slamming open and shut. I'm sure it was the loud noise that startled me, not the cause of it. When I was about 16 years old, we began to notice the strange things no longer happened, and never happened again. Now it gives us all something interesting to talk about! Has anyone else had similar experiences? Kathy How it changed my life:It made me realize that strange phenomena happen, but I have a hard time getting people to believe me when I tell them my experiences.
