I lived in an older house an was awaken a few times from the smell of a strong oder like you discribed. I now know what it was. We ended up moving out of this house because we started to find snakes that were finding their way inside. A relative informed me later that some snakes have a very potent odor. I will say the last smake I saw in the house was a copper head. There is no doubt in my mind that the smell I smelt on those occasions was in deed a snake in the room. I hope that is not what you are smelling. It wouldn't hurt to keep your eyes open though. Good Luck |

Maybe there was something wrong with the septic tank or something like that. Do you live near the woods? Maybe there was a decaying animal, as gross as that may seen. |

Ghosts are known for carrying odors. Bad/evil ghosts are known for bad odors. A pleasant odor would be a good ghost, like smelling roses or a woman's perfume.  |

Very interesting. I have been surrounded before by a wonderful scent of lilacs, but never anything unpleasant. I wished it had lingered longer because it made me feel so good. |

It doesn't have to be a supernatural event. Before you look into the supernatural, check what natural event could be responsible for this smell.
If it doesn't repeat then its very hard to say what it was...  |
