I called out sick today.. after a week of vacation...

So i went to Disney world last week using half of my vacation hours (i get two weeks that accumulate every year) and got a bad, mostly frustrating, cold, half way through my vacation. I went in to work yesterday as my first day back and everyone could obviously tell that I was very sick.

I have sick hours earned that I haven't used any of and so I called in to work today... but honestly I don't feel as bad as I did yesterday. I still feel very sick but not as bad as yesterday. =/

We have a strict "use it or lose it" policy for earned hours and I thought to myself this morning that I might as well use the sick hours when I'm really sick, rather than wait until I have no choice but to use them or lose them...

Not to mention that today is the perfect day for staying home. It's gloomy and rainy outside and I bought a new book a couple of weeks ago.... lol

We are all pretty closely-knitted at work, I only work with six people in a fairly small store and we know that sometimes each of us will just call in because we really don't want to work or have personal issues. It isn't like it happens every week or every month even but its understood that we will take care of each other when it's needed. In other words I know my coworkers won't care at all....

But still, was I wrong to have called in?

Date: 3/19/2008 8:12:00 AM  From Authorid: 12072    I called in sick today too. I'm super stressed (I hate my job) and have had a massive headache since I got up yesterday morning. I left work an hour early, called in sick today--I keep asking myself if I should've gone in, feel guilty for calling in, etc...but sometimes we need the time to get well, start fresh. Don't stress it, get some R&R. :-)
Date: 3/19/2008 8:13:00 AM  From Authorid: 16916    If you felt sick, you felt sick. I always do this too..call out and then feel guilty LOL. It just means you are dedicated hun..one day isnt going to hurt them. Plus you already called off. Snuggle up with some tea..read your new book and enjoy your day off!

Date: 3/19/2008 9:08:00 AM  From Authorid: 64567    I am sick today but went ahaead and came in. I feel really crappy. But our work gets mad when you call in cause so many people abuse it and got caught.
Date: 3/19/2008 9:08:00 AM  From Authorid: 820    I think you did the right thing staying home. When I was working, we had people coming into work with the flu, pink eye, and really bad colds just because they were too afraid to call in sick - and, low and behold, everyone that worked with them got sick, and then our customers would get sick. I think it's better to just stay home and treat yourself to some rest
Date: 3/19/2008 9:09:00 AM  From Authorid: 50434    If your not feeling good then theres no reason to think you are wrong. You get plenty of rest and I hope you feel better. Take care!
Date: 3/19/2008 10:25:00 AM  From Authorid: 12103    Use it or loose it right? Gotta use thoes suckers up!! Take it while ya can!
Date: 3/19/2008 1:07:00 PM  From Authorid: 26203    Sweetie I can honestly say that, when one has been home for a couple of days or longer, it's so very hard to get back, into routine. That the body goes into shock..Your body just needed a few more days, and you were smart enough to listen to it and there is no need to feel guilty over it. Enjoy it and you will see that when you go back it will take a couple of days and you will be pro-active again and you will have the strength to do your job well again. SO MY POINT IS...NEVER FEEL GUILTY FOR HAVING TIME OUT FOR YOUR SELF!!!!!...many blessings to your and your loved ones. Anne
Date: 3/19/2008 1:42:00 PM  ( Admin )   Always use your sick time when you are sick. That is what it is there for. You rest up and get well faster and you don't give what you have to others.
Date: 3/19/2008 2:25:00 PM  From Authorid: 61847    If you are feeling sick, you should stay home and rest. Even if you are starting to feel better. Your immune system is still low and you may catch something else!! Stay home, get better and go back when you feel better. *hugs*
Date: 3/19/2008 2:45:00 PM  From Authorid: 21764    naaah, you did what you needed to do.. take care of yourself first, everything else is secondary.
Date: 3/19/2008 5:14:00 PM  From Authorid: 63241    I'm a believer in the fact that, if you're sick you should stay home. Too many of my former co-workers (same ones who bragged about NEVER using sick leave) would come to work sick and spread it around to the rest of us. Besides, studies have shown that being sick at work causes employees to be less than competent and a possible danger to others. But it's better that you called in after coming back to work for a day rather than doing as most people do, calling in sick on their due date back to work. Take care of yourself & your body!
Date: 3/19/2008 8:13:00 PM  From Authorid: 55841    My former employer has a strict policy...if you're sick, stay home! If you pass your illness to others, and they are too sick to work, it costs the company money. A similar situation happened to me at Thanksgiving this past year, and I understand the guilt trip it can give a person, but really, you did the right thing.
Date: 3/19/2008 8:39:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 64604    thanks everyone... i feel better about my decision to call in today. more importantly, i feel a lot healthier! =) i'm going in tomorrow, then i'm driving to see mine and my boyfriend's parents in the next state.. so hopefully my fresh immune system can take the introduction back into the weather... =/ wish me luck!
