I really don't think your alone here. Actually, I know your not, because I feel the same way. When I was going to the gym on the property I live at, I waited until really late so no one would be there, and that messed with my sleeping habbits. I just knew that if I kept doing that, after a while I would stop excersing. Eventually, I just bought weights, and did cardio at home. And that has really helped me a great deal. I think your right though, if you keep going, and see results, it's not going to bother you. I just didn't wait long enough to find that out for myself. |

Its just unfounded fears and anxiety. Try to focus on the more positive aspects of the situation. You're doing something good for yourself to get healthy and lose weight. And before too long you will start seeing the results. Repeat a positive mantra in your mind. Something like, "I'm doing this for me." Or, "I'm going to lose weight and feel better." Keep repeating it until your drown out the negative thoughts. Chances are people arent even paying attention to you. We are our own worst enemy usually. |

I used to belong to a excersize place..sheesh its been so long I can`t recall the name!..Anyway I felt like you say...being eyed or looked at..I just wanted to crawl away out the door. So I know what you are talking about. It is our own anxiety for sure:D |

I have had this happen to me too. But when I lost the weight and toned up I looked right back at them. Really I found that they were more focused on themselves and probably afraid at gaining weight. I liked going early morning when the place opened. All the cute doctors would come in then ;-) But REALLY I went then to get my workout over with and have energy for the day. Also it helped me eat less all day after working so hard to get it off. Focus on you and what you need. You paid good money so let it pay you back. Good Luck! HUGS, Lisa |

I belong to a gym as well and had the same feeling when I first started. Do you want to know what everyone is really thinking about you? They are saying "good for her!" Would you rather be sitting in McDonalds with a big Mac wondering what people are saying? Remember that you are not there to impress anyone but there to get healthier and thinner. IF anyone is judging you then THEY are the ones with the real problem and not worth bothering yourself with. But trust me....more people are admiring you than you know. |

I feel that way alot!!! Although the more I went I met people that were in the same boat and we all became very friendly because we all felt the same. But this is definantly normal. Maybe you will meet some people there and become more comfortable cuz your a cool person! But music does help as well too |

Yeah when I went to the gym at first I felt a little out of place. I go there and I'm sweating, my hair is up and no make up on, its gross....but atleast at the gym I was at there was grosser people than me and everyone was keeping to themselves, not like a social place. But when I did see people that was more overweight than me, I think that atleast their doing something about it. There here, and good for them! I dont think as many people judge you as you might think, your all in the same place to accomplish the same goal. |

I hope you don't let the negative feelings about yourself stop you from going to the gym. Of those people who actually notice you at the gym, 75% would be thinking "Good on her". You don't know how they looked when they started remember. They may have been overweight too! The other 25% who will look down their noses, are really the kind of people you wouldn't normally listen to. Stop worrying. It's normal to feel a little anxious, but whatever you do, don't let it stop you from getting healthy. |

Hey, Beaver Town Girl, worry not what others think... they will dictate the way you have fun and live life if you let them. Keep the power to yourself! Do what YOU want to do and how YOU want to do it. I know... I know... easier said than done... My two cents, anyway. |

I don't think you should worry about what they think at all. They're not you and some of them used to be fat also I'm sure. When I go i see all the ripped bodies and all, it doesn't bother me one bit because i know they got it from being here the same way I'm losing weight for being there. :) |

I love the gym. It makes me feel good to run and lift and wear myself out by doing something that is good for my body. When I happen to notice that there are people bigger than me or other gym-goers (which is not very often- people are mostly concerned with their iPods or the number of calories they've burned so far), I think, "That's awesome!" Don't feel embarrassed- you are doing something great for yourself and if you think about it, some of the people you think are much smaller than you may have started out much, much bigger!!! |

Thanks everyone. I'm thinking I should go to the gym earlier on my days off. Perhaps seeing people big like me and a lot more people there would help me not feel so embarrassed. |

Each of us has a self image...some not so great, others far fetched, way out, too egotistical...what's probably on their minds is getting their workouts done...maybe even the same things going through your head, but about themselves. You are there doing something for yourself. Keep that in mind. You are probably a lot bigger in your own mind and eyes than you actually are. HUGS |

Punky, the reason people go to gyms is not just to keep fit but to lose weight, you would not be the only one who ever feels like that hun, but believe me, when I have seen bigger girls than me walk into the gym I think, good for them, they are on the road to helping themselves and I find that they are such outgoing and happy people, we all have a blast together and encourage one another to keep going. Also the thinnner people there now, all started out bigger in the beginning, so hold your head high when you walk in, you are working at it, some people never do...*hugs* |

I used to feel that way. I used to feel like everyone payed attention to the time I got there and the time I left.. and if I didn't stay a certain amount of time than they would notice, because these guys would always be there soooooo long. I'd try to work out at least an hour and than go upstairs to the dance room and dance for a half hour and they would be there when I got there AND when I left. lol. I swear they lived at the gym. Anyway.. I know how you feel. Now that Im way bigger than I used to be, I cant imagine going to a gym. I used to be embarrassed when I was half the size I am now. |
