Her mother ran in and dressed as they hooked Dante up with IV’s. They placed her on the gurney and prepared her for transport. “I will be right behind you” her mother hollered as they wheeled her out the door.
Her mother grabbed the keys and her purse and ran out the door. The ambulance had already be a ways down the road. “Please, let her be ok” she thought to herself. She drove what seemed like forever before arriving at the hospital.
When she arrived they already had Dante in a room being worked on. They would not let her mother into see her. “What is wrong with her?” she questioned. The nurse asked her mother to please have a seat and she would call her back as soon as they have Dante stabilized.
Her mother paced the floor in the waiting room. “Mrs. Brown?” a nurse called out. Her mother ran over to her. “Is Dante ok?” she asked. The nurse led her to the back. She took her into Dante’s room. “We have stabilized her, and got her temperature down some. We are going to keep her in the hospital for awhile” the nurse said. “You can sit here till they are ready to take her to her room.”
Her mother pulled a chair up to Dante’s bed. She had IV’s hooked up to her along with an oxygen mask. She was still unconscious. Her mother grabbed her hand and held it. “Dante, please be ok” she said. She could feel the heat coming off of Dante just from holding her hand.
About a half hour later, an orderly came into Dante’s room. “I am here to take her to her room” he said. Dante’s mother stood up and put the chair back as he wheeled her out of the room. Her mother followed.
He took her upstairs to her room. He and another nurse got her into her bed. They made sure everything was properly hooked up and she was situated. “You may come in now” the nurse said to Dante’s mother. She went in and sat down next to the bed. “Do they know what is wrong with her?” she questioned the nurse.
The nurse looked at Dante’s chart. “It says on here she possibly has pneumonia” the nurse replied. “They have started her on antibiotics and they are trying to get her temperature down.” The nurse set the chart down and headed out the door.
She returned a few moments later with a monitor that she hooked up to Dante. “What is that for?” her mother questioned. .”It will let us know if her temperature goes up any” the nurse replied. She placed all the necessary wires on Dante and was getting ready to walk out once again.
“Why is she unconscious?” her mother asked. The nurse stopped. “Usually when you have a temperature as high as hers, it causes the body to shut down. The body goes into a state where it is trying to help her fight the disease. Once her temperature goes down, she should come to” the nurse said. “I will be at the nurse’s station if you need anything just press the buzzer.” The nurse walked out of the room.
Dante’s mother sat there watching her daughter. She couldn’t believe she had all these machines hooked dup to her. “I knew I should have taken her to the doctor” her mother thought to herself. “Now look at how she is”
Nurse’s came into the room sporadically and checked on Dante. They would come in and place antibiotic shots into her IV, check her blood pressure, or check her temperature. There was no change in her condition. The doctor came in later that evening to check on her.
“Hello Mrs. Brown. I am Dr. McKee. I am in charge on taking care of your daughter. How long has she been this way?” he asked. Her mother stood and shook his hand. “She has been sick for a few days.” She replied. “She only took a turn for the worst last night. I found her this way when I woke up this morning”
The doctor looked at the machines hooked up to Dante and made a few notes on the chart. “Dante had a very high temperature when she came in. She was very dehydrated also. We have her temperature under control for now and we are giving her fluids for the dehydration” He stated. “She will probably be unconscious for awhile, you need to go down to the cafeteria and grab yourself something to eat if you are going to stay here”
Her mother rose from her chair. “I will do that Dr. McKee, and thank you for taking care of my daughter” her mother said. She headed down to the cafeteria. She grabbed a cup of coffee and a sandwich and headed back up to Dante’s room. She wanted to be there if she woke up so she knew what was going on.
Her mother got back up to the room and Dante was still unconscious. She sat back down in the chair and ate her sandwich. Once she finished, she walked into the bathroom and wet a towel. She wanted to wipe Dante’s forehead to help cool her off.
She walked over and placed the towel on Dante’s forehead. Her eyes opened. “I told you I was going to gain control of your daughter” Dante said. “She is weak right now, but once I take control she will gain strength” Her eyes closed once again
Her mother stood there horrified. “Is Bertha causing this?” she thought to herself. “Dante?” her mother questioned. There was no response. She pulled the chair closer to the bed and sat down. She was ready to burst into tears. She decided to try something. She made sure no one was going to come into the room.
