Sara headed back into town. She stopped at the local hardware store and bought a few gasoline cans. She drove over to the gas station and filled them up. She headed back to the house.
She went inside and started at the top of the stairs. She poured the gasoline over everything. She made sure everything was well soaked with the gasoline. She left a trailed that headed out onto the porch.
Once she poured the last drop of gasoline, she pulled a lighter from her pocket and lit it. She watched the flame as it traveled into the house and up the staircase. Within moments everything was ablaze. Sara stepped off the porch and went back to her car. She pulled it away from the house so it wasn’t caught in the inferno that would soon be taking form.
She sat there watching the house ablaze. “This had to be done” she thought to herself. “It is best for everyone” She sat there in her car watching as the house burned from the inside out. She glanced up at the upper window and noticed a woman standing there peering out at her. She could tell it was Bertha, or what had used to be here. She just knew even though she had never met her.
In the distance, Sara heard the sound of sirens coming. She knew by the time they arrived there would be nothing that could be done. The house was fully engulfed in flames. The fire trucks pulled into the driveway and flooded the front yard. “Is there anyone inside?” the one fireman asked. Sara replied “No, the house is empty”
The fire was really burning by the time the firemen started placing water on it. There was no stopping that fire. The house had started to cave in from the heavy flames. “My job is done” Sara thought to herself. One of the firemen approached her. “Ma’am, is this your house?’ he questioned.
Sara looked at him. “It was my daughter’s, but it is best that it is gone” she replied. “That house was a shack anyhow” The one fireman took down Sara’s information and everything. He told her there would be no saving the house; they would just have to stay there for fire control. Sara thanked him, said she was heading to the hospital if they needed her for questioning.
She drove over to the hospital with a sense of peace throughout her. She was glad the house was going to be gone and out of Dante’s life. She parked the car and headed into see Dante.
A nurse greeted her from the nurse’s station as she came off the elevator. “Mrs. Brown” she said. “There has been a change in your daughter’s condition.” Sara ran down to Dante’s room expecting the worst.
She walked inside and Dante was sitting up in bed. She had come out of her coma. “Mom, what happened to me?” she asked. Her mother walked in and kissed her on the forehead. “I am glad to see you are much better honey. You had a very high temperature and we didn’t think you were going to make it for awhile”
Dante looked at her. “I feel like I have been sleeping for days.” She said. Her mother sat down in a chair next to her bed. You have been honey, but you are better now.” Her mother replied.
“Dante, I have something to tell you.” Her mother said. “I have been taking care of sending out your coins, so you don’t have to worry about that. I have some bad news though. The house on Grable Lane has burned down.”
Dante sat up farther in bed. “What happened?” she asked. Her mother pulled her chair closer to her bedside. “I think there was something wrong with the wiring and it caused a fire early this morning” she replied. “The firemen are over there right now trying to put it out, but they said the house is not savable”
“Well maybe it was for the best” Dante said. “Only thing now is I guess you are stuck with me living at your place” Her mother hugged her. “You are always welcome there honey”
Dante was released from the hospital two days later. “Mom, now that all the coins and jewelry are sold, maybe we can take a vacation once we get your house painted.” She said. Her mother looked over at her. “I don’t care what we do, honey. I am just glad everything pertaining to Bertha is out of our lives now” Dante agreed
They pulled into her mother’s driveway and headed into the house. Miss Kitty met them at the door. “She really missed you” her mother said “And I missed her” Dante said as she picked the cat up and carried her inside
