Some Great Points to Consider About Your Great McCain

  Author:  61897  Category:(Debate) Created:(3/26/2008 8:04:00 PM)

The Grandpa Predicament, his lack of knowledge & prejudiced assumptions. The following was written by Dylan Loewe and I agree.

********************************************************************************

Over the past two days, John McCain has repeatedly made the same foreign policy gaffe, confusing Sunnis and Shiites and the relationship between Iran and Al Qaeda. While on a radio show, McCain suggested Iran was training Al Qaeda, and later repeated the claim multiple times in Israel. In the most publicized of those incidents, Senator Joe Lieberman is seen (and heard) correcting McCain, a scene Keith Olbermann referred to as a possible "senior moment." And despite being ridiculed by the media about those mistakes on Wednesday, the McCain campaign made the same mistake, yet again on Thursday, this time in a statement marking the war's fifth anniversary.

His error was not simply a misstatement; its repetition speaks for itself. It was, instead, evidence of a fundamental misunderstanding of Middle East politics. For a man who stakes his credibility on military affairs, to be unaware of the difference between Sunni and Shiite is unthinkable. This is not an issue of complexity or of disagreement and debate; it is as basic as knowing the difference between the two sides of this war. More importantly, McCain's ignorance seems to suggest an extremely limited comprehension of the politics of the entire region. Iran and Iraq are predominantly Shiite, but Shiites make up only 15% of the Muslim world. Might knowing that context help a president understand Iran's political objectives more clearly? Might knowing that fact help inform our decision making throughout the entire region, including Iraq? How can a man who doesn't understand a conflict help to resolve it?

His series of gaffes will no doubt become coveted ammunition, perhaps as damaging as his suggestion that the war might last 100 years. But they are also evidence of a larger problem McCain faces on the trail: the Grandpa problem. As a 71 year old man, John McCain would be the oldest man ever elected president. Recognizing the enormous rigor of the job, and the toll it has etched on the faces of those who have held it, many wonder if McCain can serve competently, and whether he will even contemplate a second term. Each time McCain makes a mistake on the campaign trail -- as he is often prone to do -- he will face questions about age, and whether the campaign and the presidency will strain him beyond his capacity.

McCain has tried to confront his age in a number of ways. He kept a rigorous campaign schedule during the Republican primary, proving an enormously impressive stamina. For a man who cannot lift his arms above his shoulders, the result of years of prison camp torture, he has certainly impressed. But he cannot afford to be seen as a grandfather confronting the first signs of senility. It would have been far better for McCain to have corrected the misstatements himself, hours, even days, after making the initial blunders. But having Senator Lieberman whisper the answer in his ear produced an undeniable imagery, that of weakness and dependency, of a grandfather struggling and confused.

Well-intended as he may have been, Joe Lieberman did a serious disservice to John McCain, a deeply satisfying irony. McCain cannot afford to have the general election debate focused on his age. But if he continues to show an alarming lack of knowledge on subjects crucial to the country, he may well help hasten his downfall.

Date: 3/26/2008 8:20:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 61897    Forget about unbacked "weird feelings" simply based out of fear of something different and what you aren't used to. Try to base your choices on facts and reason.
Date: 3/26/2008 8:31:00 PM  From Authorid: 63026    I will admit I did like Mccain, until I found out basically he's like Bush, and don't care how long it takes to get out of Iraq. And that he don't care if were over there a thousand years. And he is old, and I rather have someone who's younger, and can do more for the country. I rather see a more younger rebublican run for president.
Date: 3/26/2008 8:49:00 PM  From Authorid: 15070    Frankly-I have been a bit more concerned with Hillary's gaff about landing in a War Zone (with Chelsea) "Under Fire", when there was visual evidence to the contrary. (Like she would really unload her daughter into gunfire & run). I find it even more telling that when it was pointed out to her she had make a mistake, she was very nasty about it. I believe this is a Woman who would "hide" a mistake, instead of soldiering-up & correcting it. In a President, that is very dangerous.
Date: 3/26/2008 8:51:00 PM  From Authorid: 15070    Frankly-the only Candidate I had any faith in, was Dr. Ron Paul. I have no clue, now, whom I should vote for. I go back-and-forth with it. This election will have an impact on American History (and Policy) for Generations to come.
Date: 3/26/2008 8:58:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 61897    PsyGuy- Why does the person have to be a Republican? Why can't it depend on the particular person running and not the particular political party they belong to?
Date: 3/26/2008 9:03:00 PM  From Authorid: 63026    I think it's going to be either Clinton or Obama in the white house in 2009. I think that Mccain is too old, and the republican base should of chose a younger person. But I am leading for an Obama win!!!
Date: 3/26/2008 10:22:00 PM  From Authorid: 5886    Age affects different people differently; it's certainly not being kind to McCain though, if indeed his slip-ups are just age-related. Even so, he's applying for the job of the most powerful decision maker in the world! Errors like that which he's made so frequently in just the past month could be deadly to this country in ways exceeding any of Bush's blunders. If he truly can't remember that Iran isn't training Al-Qaeda, that's bad. If he's just not caring whether they are or not before threatening them, that's far worse. I certainly hope by some miracle, Ron Paul gets the delegates he needs to get the Republican nomination in September. It will be beyond crystal clear by then to America that McCain isn't capable of performing the job, thus basically giving an automatic win to whichever Democrat gets their nomination (and I trust neither of them as well).
Date: 3/26/2008 11:18:00 PM  From Authorid: 63194    The problem with our current candidates is... we know them too well.
Date: 3/27/2008 12:24:00 AM  From Authorid: 63725    From the time McCain decided to run to now I have noticed him aging. He looks more pale and seems to have trouble ambling about. As a person he is likeable but as a leader he doesn't cut it.
Date: 3/27/2008 2:53:00 AM  From Authorid: 8024    if the democrats keep up the badgering of each other McCain is a shoe in for the presidency...c
Date: 3/27/2008 3:07:00 AM  From Authorid: 64566    Here are my comments. #1 I do know he is not a Ronald Reagan man. #2 I think he will be another George Bush. Now I have a question here. Why did McCain's wife not go over there with him? When he's here in USA she is ALWAYS right by his side. Tell you all the honest truth , I'm not too fond of any of the candidates for this election year. .......Clifford
Date: 3/27/2008 5:45:00 AM  From Authorid: 63241    I have to say I'm with Spirit Child and Clifford on this one. I have problems with all three of the major candidates right now.
Date: 3/27/2008 6:06:00 AM  From Authorid: 2030    Many an uniformed and poorly educated person mistakes talking a good game and great public speaking presense with competancy and leadership. In fact with history as a guide most of the worlds worst dictators and incompetants were great public speakers and looked good in public and on TV.
Date: 3/27/2008 6:09:00 AM  From Authorid: 2030    And who says that Iran ISN'T training and equiping Al-Qaeda?
Date: 3/27/2008 7:02:00 AM  From Authorid: 11240    Now we start with the "ageism" (certainly wasn't going to be far behind after "racism" and "sexism" have been bantied about). McCain has principles that are of quality to many people. He flat out rejects bailing out those "poor" banks that made ridiculous business decisions in the mortgage industry. He is the senator of the state I live in, and he doesn't bring "pork" to Arizona, so his position on reducing unneccessary government spending is honest and backed up by years of practice. He gauged the public's response to the McCain/Kennedy bill re: illegal immigrants and understood it wasn't what the people wanted (you know, the ones he is serving, not the ones he'd have as subjects;). The idea that his memory is his biggest failing is an insult to ALL of us -- you forget details as you get older because your memory system gets to the overload mode, some things stick while others don't. It isn't like he can't go retrieve this information; he just has other information in his holding cells. What I look for in a candidate isn't his or her physical appearance -- what is most important to me is their reasoning skills. My guess would be that McCain reasoned that the distinction of Muslims between Sunni and Shiite weren't his main concern; his main concern is the various factions of terrorist organizations, where they are getting their funding, and how they are continuing a war in Iraq. The man is not perfect -- is that what you all need as a president? A "perfect" being? One that LOOKS good? One that says nothing substantial but SOUNDS good saying it? I really am not a John McCain fanatic, but, yes, I would prefer a Grandpa figure in the White House over a couple of snakes crawling on their bellies on the White House lawn. God Bless.
Date: 3/27/2008 7:38:00 AM  From Authorid: 63194    As far as Iran is concerned, I don't see them as a greater evil than the United States. Both countries are led by crazed leaders determined to run the country by their own radical thoughts and opinions of the world.
Date: 3/27/2008 7:39:00 AM  From Authorid: 63194    And that won't change. Hillary will be radical WHEN she is president... I'm sure Obama would be too. McCain would make Bush a flaming liberal, IMO.
Date: 3/27/2008 8:04:00 AM  From Authorid: 5886    BCAR, must not have been watching Fox News that day. Search Youtube for "John McCain: Iran training Al-Qaeda, Oh, I mean extremists", from March 19th. Joe Lieberman had to whisper into his ear and correct him... as mentioned in the main post here. An embarrassing moment for sure for McCain so you'd think he'd remember it; not go repeating the same remarks just days later like he'd done. So far, it's sounding like an exact repeat of what rhetoric led to the invasion of Iraq, just now with the 'q' switched to an 'n'.
Date: 3/27/2008 8:25:00 AM  From Authorid: 2030    And you're sure there is not Al-Qaeda support coming out of Tehran? And no I was listening to NPR that day, always good to know what the blind and crazy are up to.
Date: 3/27/2008 8:46:00 AM  From Authorid: 25856    Personally, I don't like any of the three front-runners of this election. I'm not sure what I'm going to do about voting. I feel like if I vote for Ron Paul, I'm wasting my vote, because although I support him, I cannot expect him to come close to winning. McCain does scare me with his ignorance, though.
Date: 3/27/2008 8:51:00 AM  From Authorid: 15070    ^^My position exactly!!^^
Date: 3/27/2008 11:23:00 AM  From Authorid: 19613    BCAR, as far as I am aware the Iranian government are basically Shiite Muslims, while Al Qaeda are a Sunni group. The chances of the two cooperating seem highly unlikely, especially given the fact that Iran could just as easily fund Shiite insurgents in Iraq (this is the accusation that has been levelled against Tehran as far as I know). McCain clearly confused the situation, a simple mistake to make, but worrying when it comes from the mouth of a man who would be President.
Date: 3/27/2008 12:09:00 PM  From Authorid: 2030    True yet Al-Qaeda is more of a movement within a movement dedicated to instilling Sharia law through violence and intimidation. My question originally was is anyone sure Iran isn't aiding them. Maybe not, maybe, I don't know. And isn't related to McCains public speaking gaffe, which is what it is but no more troubling than much of the garbage coming from the other contenders who offer a more crafted front but much less experience or substance. Personally I think McCain is too hold to withstand not the pressures of the job but the unrelenting attacks from the media and the opposition. Politics in this day and age is the politics of the soundbite, cute phrase, the two or one word slogan that can catch the attention of the masses between cell phone calls. I've said it before and will doubtless say it again. People are about to get the type of government they deserve.
Date: 3/27/2008 12:12:00 PM  From Authorid: 2030    Typo "hold" should read "old" as in Mccain is too old. He'd be wise to take a well deserved retirement with the grace and dignity he deserves. Not being fodder for a bunch of snipers in the press.
Date: 3/27/2008 1:09:00 PM  From Authorid: 11240    Exactly why his vice-presidential running mate is going to be an interesting choice. God Bless.
Date: 4/2/2008 5:06:00 PM  From Authorid: 4309    LoL. "His error was not simply a misstatement; its repetition speaks for itself" It started off correctly right there and then it white washed it. His repeitition is done on purpose. He knows what he is doing. You say something enough times and idiots believe it.
Date: 4/4/2008 5:17:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 61897    Good points, Wiley. It seems to be working on some folks on this very post and another site I posted this on.
Date: 4/4/2008 5:19:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 61897    "People are about to get the type of government they deserve."- BCAR you keep saying that and similar comments to that effect. What exactly does that mean? And just what is the worst that could happen if Obama gets elected in your mind?
Date: 4/5/2008 5:59:00 PM  From Authorid: 4309    What happens is what they want to happen. Who gets elected is who they want to get elected. On paper I am a True Constitutionalist Conservative Republican but the problems of this world are not the Fake Conservative Republicans. The Problems are not the supposed arch enemies the "Evil" Liberal/Democrats in sheeps clothing. The problems is that both of these groups play golf together. For awhile now Republicans have been made out to be the Evil Tyrant, and they play their role rather well, and then the supposed saviors the Democrats can leap in whenever they feel its time to play that hand in the Good Cop, Bad Cop act the idiots of society fall for. When you have an IMF package impoverish another small nation even more you might have per se the democrats talking about how it is just another "failed" policy and the republicans making it out as if its not that bad. When will the people realize that it wasn't a failed policy but something that made them all money. If it was a failed policy why is it pretty much an exact repilica of previous policies they have used before and "Failed" before making those on wall street oh so sad when they just made a bucket of money. The Iraq War is the same way. It is not a failure. It accomplished everything and more. It exceeded expetations already. Everyone has made a ton of money off of it. It is rather simple really. If my group collaborates with your group and we set out to do something that might anger say 50% of the population the best way to control that anger is for one of us to act like the "Voice" of those that are angry. Say in this instance I am the Democrats on the Iraq War. You are the Republicans. Of course you still try to spin all the things you can spin to fool some of the people to stay on your side, still make it out as if you are doing the right thing, not losing, etc and also try to at least make sure the possibility that you are doing it for evil purposes is not made totally obvious or any other negatives that you can think of that say the 50% of the people you cannot fool might be angry about. Then in I come, the Democrats, I bad mouth the republicans and make "Promises" to end the tyrany. I do try to downplay the situation as if the republicans are not that bad, I also introduce some misinformation that almost every other republican you pull off the street can name that a democrat might spew. It will help reaffirm the faith of that republican that anything the supposed republican side says is Gospel Truth and that everything the Democrat side said is a lie. It is how you control the truth and the people. Meanwhile, both democrat and republican alike have made alot of money on the Iraq War and the people are still clueless. I act like your enemy now in front of the people that hate you, give them a white washed view of how monstrous you really are, and then we both laugh over it at the party. Good Cop Bad Cop is not a new Routine and people will probably always fall for it. FBI Dropped the Ball on 9-11 when it came to that, CIA dropped the Ball on 9-11 when it came to this, this or that dropped the ball on this or that on 9-11,, etc,, etc. Spreading the blame and keeping the people confused. If Democrats and Republicans did not act like enemies and opposites people would not be so convinced they have complete choice. They would not have someone to blame for this and someone to blame for that, to cushion and spread around the blame. Or as in the we just didn't connect the dots scenario they might even be confused enough to allow them to make another costly bureaucracy Homeland Security and waste more of the Tax Payers money, while making everyone other than us money with nothing to show for it. All they have to do is say OH Noes We Are Stills havings problems Connectings DotZors and more money is thrown at them instead of just realizing these people are admittedly incompetent and right or pulling a fast one. The problem with society is not the Fake Republicans that get voted in and play their role as Tyrant well nor is it the Evil Democrat/Liberal in sheep clothing. It isn't even that these people all spin yarns to continue the illusion. Some of the problem is the people are locked in a state of cognitive dissonance. So emotional in their mode 2 thinking of forming sentiment before logic and trying to use "Logic" to find answers to match their sentiments that if they hear things hard to rationalize they want to sit in a corner and hold their ears and say nothing is wrong nothing is wrong. Like as if they just found out their mother was a serial killer and do not want to hear the evidence. Even if the mother herself confessed right in front of them they might rationalize and try to figure out ways that the mother was still innocent. When it actually comes down to it though the biggest problem is that even if they are told everything for 100% fact and there is no avoiding it they have no clue what July 4th 1776 means. They all further rationalize after going through the possibilities of their world that if there was something wrong that they could not do anything about it. Defeatists that have been pacified by drinking too much of the water among other things. Just talking about it in of itself is doing something. You are not alone if everyone knows about it are you? Risk/Threat assestment is important to anybody in power and they will appease before they commit to any other judgements that might not lead to a favorable outcome. If the preemptively strike it maybe in error and cost them ground. They are not exactly going to take it lightly if everyone is talking about everything. Sure they can hope if we where all talking about certain evils of our government that we wouldn't be willing to do anything about it once we where all sure we had enough people talking about it but its still a risk so they will appease before anything. AKA We all get mad as hell about inflation and having a fiat currency and discuss things about it that makes them nervous enough that maybe they start throwing around ideas of putting something of value behind our money to appease the disgruntled because they maybe a threat.
Date: 4/5/2008 6:04:00 PM  From Authorid: 4309    ^^ Basically we do not need to 1776 back our country to at least get some things fixed in this system more satisfactory to ourselves by playing the system. Now I personally prefer the romantic idea of 1776, because it is written in our contitution to do so to fix a broken system but you work with the people you have and not the people you want when it comes to the society you live in. The people may not be ready to demand their country back but they sure might be ready to write a really strong worded letter about their gas prices per se.
