1861:
"Marry?" the words seemed to dissolve at her lips. She was only fifteen, a young woman, yes, but still too young for marriage. Elizabeth turned to Mrs. Mulligan looking for an answer, or at least some wisdom. The old lady simply said "You know what is right to do, you never know how long these wars last" and then went inside. "Lucas, don't you think we're a bit young for marriage?" she finally replied. "Well I reckon that you'll be sixteen by the time I return, my mama married my pa when she was sixteen"
"Lucas....I dont know what to say, I will write you and I do love you, so yes I will save myself for you" A big smile formed on Lucas's face. Then Elizabeth added this part on "But I won't marry you right away, I want to save up first in order to start a family, but I will marry you, someday I promise" Lucas was still pleased, the love of his life said yes! "Thats good enough for me Lizzy!"
"Will you sit with me here, do you have to go right now?" Liz asked. He nodded his head "Yes but I can sit for a few minutes". When they sat down there was a bit of awkward silence, both of them wanted to hold each other so desperately but they knew they would have to let go, so why cause themselves the pain in the first place. But it was Elizabeths turn to make the first move, she grabbed his face and pulled him towards her and kissed him passionately. He responded by wrapping his arms around her. Almost at once Mrs. Mulligan appeared at the doorway "Ahem" she said loud enough for them to hear. They let each other go but let their hands linger on each other a bit. "Tea?" she asked. They both laughed but then they heard the trumpets from main street, beckoning the men to come.
A tear started to form at Liz's cheek because she knew he would have to go. Lucas looked at her and wiped the tear away "Aww don't cry now, you know I'll always be here to wipe away your tears" he said gently. The trumpets were getting fainter which meant the men were leaving. He kissed her on the forehead and headed to his horse. He didn't say goodbye only "I'll see you soon".
