1862:
It had been six months since Lucas left Elizabeth on Mrs. Mulligans porch that fateful day. Six months and only two letters ever got between them. "Why is it so hard for him to reply to a letter, I've been waiting three months!" Liz vented to the older woman. "Liz, we're in the middle of a war, its not easy to send a little in the middle of all this fighting. What did his last letter say?" Liz took out piece of paper that she always kept in her pocket and unfolded it gently. She could dare not rip it.
My Dearest Liz, We have been marching up north a little bit every day. There is always fear that we will be ambushed in the middle of journey but the men remain hopeful. You will be pleased to hear that your father and I have been placed in the same regiment, and he has been keeping his promise to, always looking out for me. I long for the day when I return home from this war and make you mine, my only wish is that I could be able to write you more letters. By tomorrow we should be in North Carolina, we are desperately trying to keep the Yankees away from the southern border. Wish us luck and keep me in your thoughts as you are always in mine.
Forever yours, Lucas
"And what about your father dear, did he send you anything". Liz nodded, "Oh yes I've gotten two letters from him and he says that hes ok and thinks of me often. But still..." she could not find the words to finish her thought. "He's leaving something out?" "No...I just wish I got more from Lucas, every time the postman comes my heart jumps and if its from my father I feel saddened and heavy. Is that bad? To not have joy at the message that their father is alright?"
Mrs. Mulligan smiled, "Dear your not a bad person, your a person in love"
