Cats and Dogs

I'm staying at my parents with my two dogs, a scottish terrier and a Great Pyrenees.

My dad has a strange cat who basically lives in the garage and comes in at night for awhile when no company is around. It has only 3 feet (born that way), gets around well despite that, and is as cuddly as a porcupine with rabies.

One thing I don't get about cats is, why do they act like they want to be petted, but than turn and bite your hand as they purr?? Why not just walk away like a dog would (ha ha, assuming a dog would ever get tired of being petted)?

What's funny is this cat has my Pyreness's number. The first day we were here I forgot something in the house and left the dog in the garage while I ran in to get it. When I came back out the cat had cornered my 80 pound dog. Jesse was hiding in a corner shivering in fear as the claw-less cat attacked her back. Now whenever we walk by her she reaches out to take a swipe at poor Jesse. How did the cat know Jesse was no threat to her so soon? Jesse is the type of dog that might sniff a bunny rabbit, but run away if the bunny sniffed back.

My scottish terrier on the other hand is a different story. He wouldn't waist his time sniffing a bunny, he'd just go for the throat. The cat seems to know this. She runs and hides as soon as I bring Jack out, but stalks poor Jesse.

So that is my dogs first experience with a cat. I think Jesse would get along with a nice tempered cat, if there is such a thing.

Date: 7/4/2008 7:44:00 AM  From Authorid: 64566    Kelly , cats and dogs are funny in a lot of ways. I had a chocolate lab one time that would never chase an animal. She might get up off the ground for a treat. If there's a 100 rabbits and squirrels running around her she just lays there and wags her tail like they were her children and grandchildren. I've never seen anything like her before.
Date: 7/4/2008 7:48:00 AM  From Authorid: 64497    Cats = women. Dogs = men :-p. Haha just kidding, but cats are really fickle and sometimes mean.
Date: 7/4/2008 7:56:00 AM  From Authorid: 36704    I'm not a big cat fan. Over a year ago we opened the front door and in walked a kitten. She never left and from day one decided she owned the place. We took her to get spayed after having her a few months and were told she wasn't a kitten that she was over a year old and just a petite cat at 5 lbs and that was as big as she was going to get. She beats up my 100 lb Akita and the other cats, three times her size. I don't know what her issue is, she constantly needs to be around people or she terrorizes the house. She'll knock things off counters, swing from the shower curtain, hide on top of the fridge and grab onto unsuspecting victim's heads. If you're sitting in a place she wants to lay, she'll attack you until you move. I don't know, cats are just weird.
Date: 7/4/2008 8:03:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 15228    Cliff, my dog sounds like your lab. Jesse might be curious about another animal, but she'd never give chase if they ran.

Date: 7/4/2008 8:07:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 15228    Base, sounds like you adopted a demon...sounds pretty funny though. I had a cat years and years ago, she was a sweetheart and seemed fairly normal.
Date: 7/4/2008 9:00:00 AM  From Authorid: 64566    Base , I believe I would buy me a water gun and squirt that little devil every once in a while when it does something wrong. LOL !!!!!!!! I honestly think it's the owner spoiling her.
Date: 7/4/2008 9:02:00 AM  From Authorid: 19772    I am a cat person, always have been. My husband, however, prefers dogs. Up until we moved it wasn't an issue because the place we lived before only allowed cats so I had 4 of them and was completely happy. Since we moved I had to find homes for all my cats but one and now we live in a house that it doesn't matter if we have dogs or cats. So my husband finally got his dog. Personally having a dog is like having another 2 year old. (A 100 pound two year old, lol) Dogs are just so needy compared to cats. The dog gets mad if we leave to go to work and she'll chew all the rest of the shoes in the closet. You have to keep the garbage up when we leave or the dog shreds it. And why is it that everytime I walk through the door the dog acts like she hasn't seen me in 100 years?? Even if I just ran out to the car to get something? Personally dogs are weird, I'll take my fickle cats anyday. ~Take care~
Date: 7/4/2008 9:18:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 15228    Well, Jynx, I guess you aren't use to an animal actually just liking you for you and not what you can provide when it suits their needs. That's the nice thing about dogs. They are mostly goofy, sometimes needy, but they'll mostly love you for you.
Date: 7/4/2008 9:27:00 AM  From Authorid: 64566    JINX , why did you get rid of your other 3 cats if you could still have pets in the house you are in now?
Date: 7/4/2008 10:01:00 AM  From Authorid: 51876    Cats mating is savage. They are by nature solitary.I think modern feral cats are some kind u've mutant cat that senses pheromones of aggresion, they prey on the weak, while a dog will attack things it cannot win with anyway.Cats are strange.
Date: 7/4/2008 10:27:00 AM  From Authorid: 64497    Lol Bruiex, you reminded me of my dog that loved to chase squirrels when he lived in TX. To this day if you say "Go get the squirrel" he'll freak out. Sad thing is... He never got the squirrel :(
Date: 7/4/2008 12:19:00 PM  From Authorid: 63572    Lol, as cuddly as a porcupine with rabies, I've known cats like that but my cats are little love bugs to me although my boy is scared of all other humans, especially little ones and my girl is obnoxiously annoying at times when she wants attention or to play but she's the biggest purrball you'll ever met. When cats purr while they bite you, they're playing with you. Most cats like to bite or nip when they play, although they do that when they're mad too. My girl will come up to my face and bite my cheek lightly if I wistle for too long, I think it hurts her ears and she'll bite my cell phone whenever it rings too. I'm told she's just like me! :)
Date: 7/4/2008 12:34:00 PM  From Authorid: 53961    Both have their positives ans negatives. With my dogs I have to find someone to take care of them when I go away for a couple days. Cats I can leave alone with food, water and clean litter boxes. Dogs get into the litter boxes. Cats climb drapes, screens, mini blinds and anything else where a fly may land.
Date: 7/4/2008 5:11:00 PM  From Authorid: 36901    Our cat loves our dog. They cuddle and kiss all the time. When it comes to people, he's like your dad's cat though.
Date: 7/4/2008 7:03:00 PM  From Authorid: 64621    Im a true blue dog lover....i have 2....one big one (doberman) and one little one (birddog mix) and dont understand cats.....dont like em persnally....Karrie
Date: 7/4/2008 7:52:00 PM  From Authorid: 51635    Let me start by saying that I love all animals... there are nice tempered cats in the world, I have 2. I have only ever met 1 cat and 1 dog that didn't like me. Animals can tell what kind of person you are from like 10 feet away (if you like cats, dogs, both, or none)... My sister had a cat that would chase her rotty around... It really depends on the personality of the animals ...
Date: 7/4/2008 10:07:00 PM  From Authorid: 19772    Clifford to answer your question I kind of had to get rid of the cats because not only were we making a pretty hefty and long move, which I didn't think the cats would accept so well, we originally stayed with my mom till we found a place and 1 cat was more than enough for her. Don't get me wrong I do love my stupid dog, lol, she doesn't really give me much choice in the matter, it's just like Hey Paula said cats are sort of "low maintenance" animals. Make sure they have a clean litter box and alot of food and water and you can go away for a few days. Dogs, need people. They're alot like children. My poor dog is highly offended if I let her in the yard by herself, she NEEDS me there. ~take care~
