I'm not afraid of dogs! Really.

I was taking my dog for a walk earlier. I went a way that has a very mean looking dog tied up in the yard in the morning, so I avoid that way. The dog looks like a pitbull mix and it is a dark brown, mottled color. It will go insane as we are walking by. In the afternoon it's inside.

This afternoon it happened to be out, but it didn't go insane. It came toward us..and I remember thinking, "whew! glad it's tied up", but it kept on coming...and coming, until I realized it had broken it's chain.

It made a bee line right at us, I ran up on the nearest front porch, my dogs leash is long, so I kept her on the stairs of the porch and waited to see what the dog would do. I was so scared I was shaking. It sniffed my dog and they sort of had one of those doggy stand-offs over who the sniffee was going to be. About a half a block a way there was a couple outside talking so I yelled, "Is this dog friendly?", they paused, looked at me, than went back to their conversation. So much for that.

Since it wasn't attacking my dog, I decided it was safe to come off the porch before the owners of the house called the police on me.

I began cautiously leading my dog away, or so I hoped. The strange dog began circling us, than I felt a lash on the back of my leg...and I let out something between a screech and a yelp...the guys about 2 yards over paused in their bbqing to see where the strange sound came from.....at about the same time I realize it was the ragged end of the broken chain that had cut the back of my leg and the dog was actually attempting to get us to play with him.

I was so embarrassed by the noise I made...and at running up on a strangers front porch. The dog walked with us for a while before an interesting smell led him off in a different direction.

I'm still shaking a little because it really did scare me..I don't think I'll go in that direction again!

Date: 7/5/2008 1:31:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 15228    I know Peacelover, this is a small town and it seems like there are quite a few dogs that get loose. I'm not use to that. My second night here the neighbors dog got hit by a car while I was sitting outside. It was awful! It crushed it's pelvis, but I saw him limping around the other day, getting ready to cross the road in front of a car, my daughter and I both ran out into the street to stop the car.
Date: 7/5/2008 1:32:00 PM  From Authorid: 51247    I think it's due to all the bad press that the pitbull's breed has recived most people are afraid of them. Glad all worked out well ^^
Date: 7/5/2008 1:34:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 15228    My oldest daughter was attacked by a pit-bull mix when she was 2, had to get stitches on her face, that is probably why I don't care for them. It's not only pit-bull mixes though, I'm leery of any stray dog.
Date: 7/5/2008 1:40:00 PM  From Authorid: 51247    i'm so sorry to hear, the owners of that dog should be punished. to let their dogs turn into that.. =/
Date: 7/5/2008 1:59:00 PM  From Authorid: 21435    I know what you mean, Kelly. We tell ourselves that we do not fear them, that we are the masters of all that we survey, BUT, it's hard to stand pat when the beasts charge..hehe...;) "Discretion is the better part of valor," and all that. Glad that you and pooch are OK.:) Write on.....
Date: 7/5/2008 2:21:00 PM  From Authorid: 64497    I think almost everyone gets nervous whenever a strange dog (any dog) runs at them. I'm actually more nervous of labradors than I am of pitbulls, but that is because there is more bites per year from labradors than pitbulls. I'm glad you are okay :)
Date: 7/5/2008 2:49:00 PM  From Authorid: 15157    Glad you are ok...and dont go that way again!(hugs)
Date: 7/5/2008 2:57:00 PM  From Authorid: 15070    I agree w/Callice. I love Dogs, but I was walking Oskar and two big Golden Retrievers ran at us, barking. Oskar is a 5-6 lbs mini-Doxie, so I scooped him up. I know that Goldens are nice dogs (normally) but when dogs are together, and their owners are not out, who knows what a dog will do? Luckily the owner came out, and the dogs were friendly. But I would be lying if I did not say I was not intimidated.
Date: 7/5/2008 3:22:00 PM  From Authorid: 63026    I was always scared of small dogs growing up. But I outgrew it, and got a small fox terrier.
Date: 7/5/2008 6:14:00 PM  From Authorid: 42945    Well Kelly, I'm not scared of dogs but if that had happened to me I would have reacted the same as you hun lol!! the saying goes that if you show fear with a dog that comes close to you it could attack so to stay calm lol, I've had many a time when I've had to walk past one and try to act nonchalant lol, shaking inside all the time till I got right away from it....:)
Date: 7/5/2008 7:30:00 PM  From Authorid: 15677    good thing you reacted the way you did, no matter what size the dog you never know what could happen.
Date: 7/5/2008 8:09:00 PM  From Authorid: 64566    I agree with Zema.
Date: 7/5/2008 11:48:00 PM  From Authorid: 35720    I'm really glad you and your dog were unharmed.. Pits are really hit or miss because a lot of people get them to look "tough" and wind up training them to be mean.. it's a shame.. my Pit Bull is a sweetheart and sometimes people cross the street when I walk her or act visibly afraid of her.. it kind of makes me feel bad.
Date: 7/6/2008 5:14:00 AM  From Authorid: 64514    I would've been afraid to, you can't trust a dog you don't know
Date: 7/6/2008 2:41:00 PM  From Authorid: 24003    I would have been scared to, you just dont know with some dogs. Im glad you and your dog are okay.
