Liz fell to the ground as she bounced off the wall where she had been thrown. Two of the other vampires she didn’t know approached her, fangs exposed and ready for a feast. They both stopped and glanced back at Kate, as if to ask her permission. Liz guessed that the ceremony had been ruined and couldn’t be completed tonight because Kate gave a simple wave as if to let them know they could tear into Liz.
One of them laughed wickedly in a deep voice as it leaned down and stared Liz in the eye for several moments; perhaps a moment too long simply to salivate. There was a creak in the wood next to Liz as if someone were trying to sneak up on them. The vampire heard it too. It glanced over just long enough to see Jason swing the shovel towards its neck, slicing right through it with the force with which he swung it.
“Oh thank God,” Liz breathed as the vampire collapsed to the floor. The other one who was ready to indulge in her blood backed off instantly, observing what had happened to his friend. Dean swept into the church quickly behind Jason, clothes-lining Kate as she tried to charge Jason, throwing her to her back.
Victoria grabbed Dina’s dark hair and jerked her head to the side and growled. Dina struggled to get free of the vampire that held her, but she was strong; her grip firm on Dina. Laura dropped to her knees and slid past Dina and the vampire who held her and scooped the knife up in her hand and in one swift move was back on her feet. Victoria noticed her and was ready to call a warning to the vampire that held Dina, but Laura was too fast for her.
The second she was up, she plunged the knife into the back of the vampire instantly destroying her. Dina, suddenly free of the vampire’s hold, sucker-punched Victoria and knocked her safely away from her neck.
Josh was by Laura’s side in a quick beat, she swung at him with the knife. He ducked away, but wasn’t scared off that easily. He lunged for her, but Jason was quick to jump in front of Laura. Josh slammed into Jason instead of Laura, the force of the strike caused Jason to drop his shovel. Josh wrapped his cold hands around Jason’s neck and lifted him slightly off the floor and threw him in the direction of Engres and Shawn.
Shawn, meanwhile, kept his eyes on his sisters while Engres stared HIM down. Jason landed hard against Engres where Josh had thrown him. Engres flicked him off of him as if he were nothing more than a pesky fly. Shawn noticed Josh going for Laura again, so he quickly ducked away from Engres when he was distracted by Jason. He narrowly ducked out of Engres’s reach and away from his cold and bony hand. Shawn Jumped onto Josh’s back in an attempt to tackle him to the floor, but Josh grabbed Shawn’s arm and flipped him over his shoulder, wrapping an arm around Shawn’s neck and punching him in the ribs that he knew were already injured. Shawn clenched his teeth trying not to yell out in pain. He kept his hand in a fist, hoping Josh wouldn’t notice the blood that oozed from the bite Angi had given him.
Jason tried to pull himself up off the ground, having been tossed around in the air like a volleyball, but at the same moment that he got from his knees to his feet, the last of the unknown vampires in the room grabbed his arms and pulled him the rest of the way up to his feet. The vampire held on so tightly that Jason wasn’t able to pull himself out of his grasp; but he fought it none-the-less.
Victoria again lunged for Dina, grabbing her long dark hair as Dina tried to run far enogh away to avoid Victoria. For the first time Dina could recall, she cursed her long beautiful hair. Victoria pulled so hard on the handful of hair she held in her hand that it jerked Dina’s neck back hard enough to pop it and the sudden stop forced her fall to her back on the ground. Victoria, in her sexy black stilettos, stepped one foot onto Dina’s chest, as if she were ready to pierce it with the point of her heel. She pressed forcefully enough onto Dina’s chest that it hurt to breathe and she could feel the spike heel digging into her skin. She dared not struggle at this point, for fear Victoria would crush her.
To any observer, the chaotic scene appeared to be a botched rescue on everyone’s part. Liz lay against the wall, still covered in her own dark and dried blood. Her eyes were dull and far away as she tried to take in what she was seeing. She felt helpless to do anything, not even having the strength to stand up anymore. She could feel the world listing strongly to the left—a sure sign she was about to slip out of consciousness again.
In a quick instant, Engres leapt over to Laura, but Angi, free from her ropes that she had managed to chew off, grabbed Laura’s arms from behind, and pulled her close. Laura instantly and instinctually tried to loosen herself from Angi’s grip, trying to swipe at her with the knife in her hand, but Angi’s voice whispered in her ear in a soothing tone, “be still.” Laura, needless to say, was very confused but for whatever reason, did as Angi had instructed, pressing the knife down against her back so she wouldn’t cut Angi.
Engres, pleased that his minions had done their jobs well, took two large steps over to where Liz lay against the wall and picked her up by her throat. She was loose and limp in his grasp. What little breath she was taking in at this point, slowed as his grip tightened on her throat. He motioned for Kate, who lay on the ground, to toss him the goblet that was to be used in the ceremony, not noticing Dean behind her. Engres was determined he would finish his ritual as best as he could at this point—if it was too late, he was sure to feast on the sad victim in his grip instead. He lifted Liz higher into the air and placed a sharp nail against her wrist, ready to slice it and let what blood remained in her body drain.
Suddenly, there was a loud and commanding voice, “STOP!” It was Dean. He had grabbed hold of Kate before she could reach the goblet and picked her up off the ground. He had her bent over backwards, an arm wrapped around her body with his bicep pressed below her chin so she couldn’t bite him. Her neck was exposed and his silver knife was pressed to it.
Engres froze, the look in his eye said it all. He was utterly furious that Dean had escaped the wrath of the vampires in the room, and that anger was only intensified by the fact that it was his Kate whose life hung in the balance. Everyone in the room, vampire and human alike halted, all were equally as stunned by the scene that was unfolding.
