“Drop her!” Dean commanded angrily. Kate struggled to get free of his grip, so he pressed the knife harder to her throat. “I will kill her.” Dean said in an eerily calm voice that even Engres had to fear.
Engres didn’t release Liz, he held on tightly, “she means more to you than Kate does to me,” he lied. Liz was now completely limp in his grasp. Even in the darkness, Dean could see Liz was totally unconscious now.
Dean shook his head, “nuh uh,” he said quietly, “you guys find a mate and mate for life. Humans don’t play by the same rules. I can live without her,” he said nodding to Liz, “can you say the same about Kate.” Dean remained expressionless, hoping that Engres wouldn’t call his bluff on how much Liz really meant to him. In reality, he knew he was playing with fire, but he was hoping that Kate would be a good enough bargaining chip that she could easily be traded for Liz. “I was most recently with Kate—not Liz if you recall.”
Engres and Dean stood staring at each other, challenging the other to make the first move—the first mistake. Laura’s heart raced. She couldn’t believe Dean was risking so much, practically giving Engres the okay to go ahead and kill Liz. She flinched in Angi’s grip, but settled quickly, not wanting to startle anyone into making a move that could endanger her sister’s life.
Angi tightened her grip and in a barely audible whisper spoke in Laura’s ear, “let me have the knife.” Laura glanced out the corner of her narrowed eyes at Angi’s face which was close beside her own. She shook her head no. “Shawn is going to need it more than you,” Angi urged. Laura considered for a moment and loosened her grip on the knife, letting Angi take it easily from her. Laura couldn’t understand why, nor could she even believe that she trusted this vampire…but something in the way Angi spoke forced Laura to trust her. She was different. Not cold to the touch like all other vampires she’d ever dealt with.
Shawn, in Josh’s grip, noticed Angi speaking to Laura, he was curious what was being said. Laura didn’t look angry or even scared, so he was very confused what Angi could be saying to her. Angi’s expression changed when she glanced up at Shawn, as if she’d felt him watching her. Her eyes were soft, as if they were trying to tell him something. Suddenly he remembered the bottle Laura had slipped into his pocket, he could feel it against his side where it rested in the pocket of his jacket, though he wasn’t sure what it was or why she’d passed it to him. It didn’t matter, he trusted his sister.
Engres and Dean were still staring at each other, neither of them moving. Not so much as blinking. Dean finally spoke again, calm and quiet, “let Liz go and I won’t hurt so much as a hair on Kate’s head.”
A smile started to creep across Engres’ face; an evil smile that displayed his long fangs. Kate hissed in Dean’s grip, still trying to wiggle loose. Upon noticing the evil smile, Dean flinched. He knew that meant trouble. He shifted his weight, as if he were going to run towards Engres, but thought it better not to. Engres pressed his long and yellowed, sharp nail into Liz’s wrist slowly, drawing blood to the surface. He slowly began to draw his nail across her wrist, slicing further into it. Blood now ran down Liz’s wrist, pooling in her slightly cupped palm, before slipping through her fingers and dripping onto the floor below. It became a steady stream as Engres sliced across the wrist. Every vampire in the room sniffed the air, smelling the feast that was forming a puddle on the floor.
Instinctually, Dean dropped Kate to the ground with a THUD and ran for Engres. Engres quickly sliced his nail the rest of the way across Liz’s wrist and tossed her to the ground like a wet towel. Dean, infuriated, tackled Engres and plunged the silver blade of his knife into Engres’ chest, knowing it was futile. He knew it wasn’t going to work, but his anger was so elevated that he reacted on animalistic instincts.
Engres laughed at him. He swiftly backhanded Dean, which looked to be such minor movement on his part, but actually sent Dean spinning into the post that Liz had been tied to only minutes ago.
Angi immediately released Laura, “use the salt in your pocket; put a ring of it around Liz so no one can get to her.” As soon as she finished her statement, she shoved Laura in Liz’s direction and ran towards Josh and Shawn. She knew she was much too weak to fight the vampires herself, so she slipped the knife into Shawn’s hand as she passed by him, then dipped down to the ground to grab the shovel she had seen Jason use and continued running towards the back of the church.
The back side of the church was nearly pitch black, but she easily spotted Jason and the vampire holding him. She swung at the vampire with the shovel, knocking the side of its head. The blow stunned the vampire just enough that Jason was able to easily jerk his arms out of the vampire’s grip. Angi immediately surrendered the shovel to Jason, so he could finish the job with the vampire. He swung easily at the vampire before it regained it’s composure, slicing easily into its neck hard enough that its head flew to the far wall. Its body crumpled to the floor at Jason’s feet.
Shawn, now with the silver knife in hand, thrust the knife back into Josh’s gut. The silver stung Josh just enough that he growled in pain and released Shawn. Shawn immediately and instinctually ran for Engres, who was approaching Kate, who lay on the ground where Dean dropped her. Laura was crouched down near Liz’s body, pouring a salt ring around her unconscious body. Shawn was relieved that Liz would be safe while Laura and he fought off the creatures of the night.
Kate, seeing Shawn approaching, stood up immediately and effortlessly and pushed Engres out of the way of Shawn. Shawn’s knife was then thrust strongly and deeply into Kate’s chest. She stood with a look of shock on her face for a moment; Shawn was sure he hit her heart. Finally, after a few long seconds, Kate burst into a cloud of dust right before Engres’ eyes.
The yellow in the eyes of Engres seemed to glow and radiate hate for Shawn. Yet he stood ever-so shocked by the fact that his mate had just been so effortlessly destroyed before him.
