Shawn immediately screwed the cap off the bottle and hastily poured it over the blade of the knife, keeping his eyes all the while on the approaching Engres. He handed the bottle back to Jason, not wanting to spill any, and ran for Engres.
Engres and Shawn collided mid-step. Engres grabbed Shawn’s wrist and forced it into the air so Shawn couldn’t stab him with the knife. Then Engres knowingly thrust the heel of his hand into Shawn’s wounded ribs, forcing Shawn to cry out in pain as he fell to his knees; but he held tightly onto the knife, refusing to let go.
Engres now leaned over him, still holding his arm above him, and wrapped his other hand around Shawn’s neck. He squeezed Shawn’s wrist tightly, forcing the muscles in his hand to expand. The knife slipped slowly out of Shawn’s hand. As Engres leaned further over Shawn, he tightened his grip around Shawn’s neck. “I am going to kill you first…then I’m going to find your sisters and be sure they suffer a slow—very slow death,” Engres whispered angrily in Shawn’s ear in a harsh and gravely voice.
Shawn, who was very defensive over his sisters, suddenly growled in an almost animalistic way as he unexpectedly quit feeling the pain in his ribs from the adrenaline that pulsed pure in his veins. He began to force his weight back towards Engres more strongly than Engres thought a human could. Shawn leaned in toward Engres, quietly scooping up the knife in his hand as he slowly worked his way back to his feet, much to the surprise of both Engres and Jason, who stood by with the shovel, pouring the holy water and wolfbane on it.
Engres stood shocked as Shawn reached an arm up and wrapped his hand strongly around Engres’ neck. Then, before Engres realized he had grabbed the knife, Shawn pressed it slowly into his chest, making sure Engres felt it as it tore painfully through his flesh.
Jason then ran up from across the room, shovel high in the air. Engres swung at Jason; the shovel was knocked out of his hands as it slid across the floor. Engres was as panicked as anyone had ever seen; fearing the bloodline that brought him down the first time was going to succeed again. He tried to maintain his calm and strength, but the wolfbane was searing in his veins like acid.
Jason caught himself before he hit the floor and unscrewed the cap on the bottle with his free hand. He pushed himself back up off the floor and ran for Engres, who was still clutching Shawn just as strongly as Shawn was holding on to him. Jason pushed back on Engres’ forehead, forcing his mouth open, and turned the bottle upside down in his mouth, emptying the contents down his throat.
Engres immediately cried out and thrust Shawn back across the room. Shawn stumbled backward and tripped over the shovel that lay on the floor. Blood began to ooze up and out of Engres’ mouth; the black blood of a vampire. It dripped in streams down the corners of his mouth. He gurgled, choking on his own blood. The holy water boiled in his mouth, steam rising to the ceiling and filling the ceiling of the church with a grayish thick cloud.
Shawn was stunned by what he saw, but he only hesitated a second, knowing this may be the only moment of weakness he had to strike Engres down. If he hesitated too long, the opportunity may be gone forever. He picked up the shovel, flipped it into the air, so the metal end was up and gripped it securely. He clenched his jaw tightly shut as he took off running towards Engres. Jason immediately stepped back and away from Engres; he knew Shawn was going to swing hard and fast and he didn’t want to be in the way of that.
Shawn swung the shovel back like a baseball bat, and planted his left foot strongly on the floor just before Engres. Then, with a yell like a warrior, he swung the shovel toward Engres’ neck with every ounce of strength left in his broken body. He thought of Laura and of Liz as he swung and mustered forth an extra bit of power as the shovel made contact with the unsuspecting Engres. There was a CRUNCH as the shovel sliced through his neck and broke through the spine.
The force from the blow was so strong that it spun Engres’ head around twice on his neck before it finally rolled down his shoulder and bounced to the floor. His dead body crumpled to the ground below, black blood instantly pouring out of his neck and puddling on the floor at Shawn’s feet.
Shawn stood panting from exhaustion as he let the end of the shovel drop to the floor with a loud CLANG. Jason stood awe-struck by the sight of Engres’ head spinning on his body. “Wow,” he said quietly, “too bad our ancestors didn’t do that.” He looked up at Shawn and smiled.
At that moment, Dina walked back into the church followed closely by Laura. “Whoa!” Dina exclaimed when she saw the head of Engres laying on the floor a few feet from his body.
Laura ran up to Jason and threw her arms around him, “thank God you’re okay!” she whispered in his ear. He wrapped his arms, muscles sore from fighting, around her tiny frame and held on tightly, “you too,” he stated softly. She leaned back from him and stared into his cold blue eyes and he flashed that boy-ish, charming smile that she had fallen in love with as he stared deeply into her dark eyes. Leaning forward now, he pressed his soft lips to hers. The kiss was more than passionate…it was desperate love, relief, and joy in one smooth statement. She melted in his arms as he tightened his grip, one arm around her waist to pull her closer in to him.
Shawn smiled with relief at the sight of his sister very much alive and well, but had to roll his eyes at her very public display of affection for Jason. Shifting his gaze, he noticed Angi standing patiently outside the door, so he brushed past Dina on his way out the door to her. Once outside he stood quietly in front of her for a moment, not sure what to say. He glanced down at the bite she had given him earlier in the night; the wound was already closed, which showed how shallow the bite had actually been.
Looking back up into her eyes, “What…how…?” Shawn wasn’t really sure which one of the hundreds of questions going through his head he should ask her first.
Angi, already knowing she had some explaining to do, motioned with her hand for him to calm down. “My mother was a vampire,” she began, “my father was human.” She paused for a moment to let it sink in. “I don’t know how or why, but she never bit him…never turned him. She loved him too much for that, I guess. I had to let Josh bite me a couple weeks ago so he’d think I was a vampire. I knew it wouldn’t affect me because I already have a little of the vampire blood in me; that’s why I let Engres bite me just now,” she explained, reaching up and grabbing the open wound on her neck.
“Why did you bite me?” Shawn asked a little agitated.
“You ticked me off!” she said defensively, “you had me tied up…AND you were threatening to kill me!”
Shawn smiled, “sorry.” He looked down, “but I didn’t know…why didn’t you tell me in all that time we were together?”
“You never told me you hunted vampires,” she pointed out. “You know why I didn’t tell you. How awkward would it have been to say, ‘hey sweetie, by the way, I’m half vampire;’ most people wouldn’t believe or accept that.”
Shawn laughed, “You have a good point there. But…why did you leave me after you found out about my secret, you know I would have understood.”
“Uh…Shawnie?” she said in her typically cute voice, “I saw you KILL vampires—for sport…I’m part vampire. It kind of freaked me out.”
Shawn stared deeply into her eyes, “valid point,” he said. “But I could never hurt you, and you know that.”
“I know,” she stated softly, “but what’s done is done.” She kept his gaze for a moment longer, “I think I’m going to go home now,” she said just above a whisper, “now that I know you’re okay.”
“One more question,” he said before she turned to leave, “you have the teeth…but do you have any of the perks of a vampire? Like strength or speed?” Shawn couldn’t help it, he was always so curious.
“I can see better than a bat in the dark and I can hear things that are miles away. I guess it’s a perk.” She said with a flirtatious smile as she turned to walk off.
“Don’t you need a ride home?” he called to her.
“It’s a beautiful night for walking,” she called over her shoulder, “Clean up your mess and go home, Shawn.” She turned and took one last look at Shawn, then jogged off into the darkness.
Dina ran out the door behind Shawn, “Great work, dude!!” She lifted her hand to give him a high five, “so you had a love affair with a vampire,” she added with a laugh.
Shawn laughed as well…it did sound pretty funny. “It’s Shawn,” he said extending his hand for a shake instead of a high five.
Dina rolled her eyes, “you and your family are all the same,” she said shaking her head. She lowered her hand and took his in hers, “I’m Dina.” She paused contemplating for a moment, then spoke again, “and maybe it’s all this excitement from the fight and all but…you’re kind of hot; you through with that vampire?”
Shawn blushed and flashed her a smile with a nod, "perhaps."
