Liz groaned as she reached her hands up to rub the sleep out of her eyes. She blinked her eyes open slowly, the bright white of the room was nearly blinding to her. She rubbed her eyes again, then sat bolt upright in bed and felt her gums with her fingertips, checking for vampire fangs. She couldn’t remember much of the night past being thrown into a wall for what seemed to be the hundredth time, and what she did remember was all a little fuzzy.
She heard laughter next to her, a deep and comforting voice, “you okay there?” Turning her head she saw Dean. “You look like hell.” She said flatly in a scratchy voice.
He smiled with relief, happy that Liz was awake and, for the most part, well. Acting like her old self, to say the least. “Speak for yourself,” he returned.
Liz noticed the bandage around her wrist and reached up and felt the bandage around her head. “Long night,” she said with a shrug.
“Long night,” Dean agreed with a nod.
“Got your coffee,” Jason said loudly from the doorway, two cups of coffee in hand. “Liz!” he exclaimed as he looked up to see her sitting up in bed, finally awake.
Laura ran down the hall when she heard Jason yell, and with her sudden stop slid a little in the hallway as she grabbed to the doorframe. “Liz!!” she exclaimed in a piercingly loud voice. She regained her balance and ran into the room, throwing her arms around her sister. “I am SO glad you’re okay!” She continued to hold on for a moment longer, then finally let go and backed up to examine the bandages on Liz’s head. “You done hunting vamps?” she questioned.
Liz shrugged, “maybe…”
Shawn, who had just entered the room, spoke up, “better be! I’m not saving your butt next time!” he walked up and gave her a tight hug.
“Yea you will,” Liz teased as he backed off. She noticed the dark haired girl standing in the corner of the room quietly watching. “You’re…Dina?” she asked, pointing at her. Dina nodded silently. “Thanks,” Liz stated, “I am pretty sure I wouldn’t have made it without you.”
“I know you wouldn’t have,” Dina answered with a wink, “but I still owe you a head butt from last night.”
Liz have her a knowing look as she shrugged, “did what I had to.” She glanced over at Dean, “so what ended up happening?” she asked.
“Don’t look at me? I drove your butt here and missed the best part of the night!” He pointed in Shawn and Jason’s direction, “they took care of the rest of ‘em. Buried the heads and burned the bodies even.”
“You killed them all!?” Liz said excitedly.
Shawn nodded, with a smile, but Liz spotted Dina glance at Laura through the corner of her eye. Laura shook her head and Dina, then turned and smiled at Shawn. Liz, noticing the exchanged look, raised her eyebrows at Laura.
“Jason!” Laura shouted without warning, “could you go and get me some coffee, too?” she asked.
“You said it tasted like cigarette butts.” He argued.
Laura looked at him with her puppy-dog eyes, “please??” she begged.
Jason, being the good boyfriend he was, winked a blue eye at her and left the room to get her some coffee. Laura looked at Dina and nodded for her to leave as well, motioning her head towards Shawn. Dina took the cue to get Shawn out of the room, so she batted her dark eyes at Shawn, “you want to get some breakfast with me?” she asked more sweetly than Liz realized Dina could be. Dina slipped her hand into Shawn’s and led him out of the room before he had a chance to answer.
Laura watched as they walked down the hall then turned to Dean, “could I have a minute alone with my sister?” she asked sweetly.
“No…sorry,” he said shortly, “I saw that look…you’re about to talk vampires.” “Talk to me,” Liz said as Laura shut the door to the hospital room, reluctantly allowing Dean to stay.
“We didn’t exactly get them ALL.” She said slowly. “But I didn’t have the heart to let Shawn know.”
“Who got away?” Liz questioned.
“Victoria.” She answered simply.
Dean dropped his head at the same moment Liz heaved a sigh. “A hunter,” Liz said quietly. “She’s going to be dangerous.”
Laura nodded, “I know. I tried, but she was going to kill Dina. Because she’s hunted with us before, she knows our moves and she knows how we work, and she won’t hesitate to use it against us.”
“Welp,” Liz started with more energy than she knew she had, “you know what we’ve got to do.” She looked up at Laura, “you have Jake?” she asked.
Laura laughed, “yes…I have your knife.” She shook her head and mumbled, “I can’t believe you named your knife Jake…”
Dean, who had been sitting quietly, finally spoke, “she was a good hunter….she’ll be a formidable enemy because she knows our tricks.” The girls grew let their laughter subside as they turned their attention to Dean, who sat solemnly. “Dracula once said ‘I am the last of my kind’…” he began, “but I think Victoria may very well be just the beginning of our troubles.”
