Train Your Brain to Be Happier
Some people are naturally happy, but even if you weren’t born perpetually upbeat, you can still learn to be happier! According to brain researcher Dr. Richard Davidson, happiness is a skill. Just like playing a musical instrument, it takes practice. So, here’s how to train your brain to be happier, courtesy of Ladies Home Journal.
Don’t believe everything you think. Experts say that every person has about 60,000 thoughts a day – and the vast majority are negative. Like, “I’m so stupid,” or “If I eat this, I’ll get fat.” In fact, we’re hardwired for negative thoughts. Look at it this way: if you get 10 compliments, and one criticism, what do you remember? The fix: Focus on the 10 compliments. Studies show that the more you concentrate on positive thoughts, the happier you’ll be.
Notice the happy things in your life – no matter how small they are. Studies show that happy people make a point to notice everything good that happens to them. The smell of baking bread, the sound of a bird, the sight of a well-behaved dog. Eventually, noticing positive things becomes a habit. In fact, when you look for the positive, your brain helps you find positive things. You can see that in action when you decide to buy a car. Suddenly, you see the car you’re interested in everywhere you go.
Stick with the happier thoughts. For example, every time you face a challenge, both negative and positive thoughts will pop up. So, pick a positive one to hang onto. For example, say you’re on a deadline. Don’t dwell on thoughts like, “I can’t get this done in time!” Or, “I’ll have to work late every day this week!” Instead, find something positive that’s equally true, like “I haven’t missed a deadline yet.” Or “I can ask for help if I need it.” Or “The more I relax, the more creative I feel.” Simply clinging to the positive thoughts that pop up will help you feel better, fast.
