Tips for Reaching Your Weight Loss Goals
So you’ve vowed that this is the year that you’ll finally lose those 10 or 15 extra pounds. Well, here’s what works – and what you need to watch out for - to reach your weight loss goals. We found this in Newsweek magazine.
What works: Keeping a food diary. One of the biggest factors when it comes to shedding pounds is being conscious of what you’re putting in your mouth, and keeping an honest food diary makes you painfully aware. James Hill is the director of the nutrition center at the University of Colorado – and he says people really don’t know what they eat. They don’t count the piece of chocolate they swiped off a co-worker’s desk. It all adds up and keeping a diary forces you to face reality. It works. According to a recent study, scientists found that those who kept a food diary DOUBLED their weight loss.
Another proven way to lose weight: If your company offers a workplace weight loss program, join it. More than 10% of employers’ health costs are obesity related – which is why a growing number of companies have entered the battle of the bulge. A recent review found that employees who took advantage of on-the-job weight loss programs lost an average of 2 to 14 pounds. One of the reasons they work is the built-in group support – since most adults spend half their waking hours on the job. If your company offers $5 per percent of body weight lost – a 150 pound person losing only 15 pounds could earn an extra $50.
Now, for the biggest stumbling block when it comes to weight loss: Saturday. Researchers at Washington University in Saint Louis tracked the eating habits of adults for a year and every single person ate more calories on Saturdays than any other day of the week. Another stumbling block – those Saturday calories were also from foods with the highest fat content. That eating habit alone could pack on an extra 9 pounds in a year! So watch what you’re eating on Saturdays – especially at restaurants. Most restaurant entrees could easily feed two – so split something.
