So my wisdom teeth are finally coming out...and I'm getting a frenulectomy. FUN!

lol so, I finally went to the dentist today (it's been like, 6 years...really bad.) They did the basic cleaning and x-rays and my oh me my teeth hurt! lol. Can you imagine 6 years of tarter build-up? They really got on me about not flossing....eep. I promised her I'd try haha. But I didn't have any cavities! That was my main concern.

But anyway, my wisdom teeth have been coming in for over a year now and the x-ray shows they are impacted. And I have an abnormality called tongue-tie that this dentist wants to get corrected. (It's sort of strange. When I was a child, the dentist told my mom that as long as it didn't affect my speech then not to worry about it. This dentist told me that it's doing some damage to my gums and it makes it extra hard to get behind those teeth with my toothbrush with my tongue right there. But why did this dentist feel it needs to be corrected, while the dentist 6 years ago didn't feel concerned to address it at all?) I feel kind of excited about the frenulectomy cause I've wanted to get it done for a lone time, but never tried to have it done because I thought my reasoning was purely just because I wanted to stick my tongue out one day.

But anyway, so I found a video on youtube where they were videotaping someone getting a wisdom tooth cut out. OMG. Now I'm a little scared haha. Cause they just kept pulling tooth out, and the hole was so big...and blood! *whimpers* The thought of a frenulectomy does worry me a bit though, cause I worry that I'll have trouble with speech until I get used to it...and I'll probably be biting my tongue a lot at first haha.

But if you've had wisdom teeth cut out, or a frenulectomy...what was your experience? I know I'll need time off work to recover, but how many days do I need? I can't operate far from a bed when I'm in a lot of pain and on pain pills, you know? Do they normally take out all 4 at once? Do you think they'd do the wisdom teeth and frenulectomy on the same day? lol I probably should be asking the surgeon this when I have my consultation, but you know how questions are. You just want to know now!

I know my jaw/mouth is going to be so sore. I have a small mouth, so they are going to have to stretch it wide to get back there.

Date: 7/21/2008 10:29:00 PM  From Authorid: 29532    Meh my mouth is small too and lemmie tell ya it ain't so bad. They twilight ya. You don't remember any of it and afterward, just follow what tehy tell you and it really isn't that bad at all.
Date: 7/21/2008 10:36:00 PM  From Authorid: 49546    I just recently had my four wisdom teeth pulled. Sucked! Ha ha. They didn't pull all four at one go, two at a time, with a one week gap. The process itself is torture (I felt). As long as they numb you realy well, there is actually no initial pain, but because I was awake (I have heard that some people can do the operation asleep) and you can feel them tugging and you're just sitting there watching them tug and tug and tug. Not fun. I had a really bad tooth so they had to cut it in half, before they pulled it out. Not fun! The upper two wisdom teeth are actually not so much trouble, took them about 45 seconds, but the bottom ones were a pain. Overall, I hated the experience, who would like it? Surprisingly I recovered very well. They were willing to give me 3 days off work, per extraction, so total 6 days for all four teeth. But I recovered within a day, and they didn't give me so many painkillers. They only gave me one per day (stingy dentist). The initial 12 hours after getting pulled out is the worst! The numbing doesn't go away for aout 3-4 hours. Plus, your mouth is filled with cotton balls for awhile, to suck the blood out (lol). So my word of advice, eat a hearty meal before hand, and drink a lot, because the initial 12 hours, even with a straw, it was hard to drink. AS for the frenulectomy, never heard of it. Take care and good luck! =)
Date: 7/21/2008 10:42:00 PM  From Authorid: 53909    I had all four of mine pulled out long time ago. I remember them putting me to sleep and I also remember waking up while they were working on me. I didn't feel anything. I saw some blood squirt and two of doctors working on me. One of them said "It's okay." I remember thinking..."Whatever" and I went back to sleep... ha ha ha I remember my cheeks puffing out sooo bad, I looked like a chipmunk. Try not to chew on your inner cheek like I did. I wasn't feeling anything but I did later after the numbness went away.
Date: 7/21/2008 10:42:00 PM  From Authorid: 64123    I had all four impacted as well, and removed all at once. Thankfully I had mine removed in hospital and out cold than in the chair. Its really not as scary as some can make out. Iwas swollen a good few days and sore but nothing unbearable after the first day. Just make sure you have plenty of ibuprofen around and ask the dentist for something stronger the first day or two. Good luck on both procedures, you'll be just fine :)
Date: 7/21/2008 10:49:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 60792    LPF, Frenulectomy is when they cut the membrane under the tongue (you know that piece of tissue that connects your tongue to the bottom of your mouth?) Normally, it only extends so far into the tongue while mines goes all the way to the tip. I've got a really extreme case. I'm looking on youtube and finding lasers are more common now. But probably cost more. lol Wouldn't it be funny if they cut it and I find out my tongue is super long?
Date: 7/22/2008 5:10:00 AM  From Authorid: 63725    LOL maybe KISS needs a new band mate! I have heard wisdom teeth removal is a breeze. My daughter had hers out and they zonked her out. She was fine.
Date: 7/22/2008 5:27:00 AM  From Authorid: 15677    First of all Im terrified of the dentist so just getting there is a problem for me. I had all 4 removed at once... completly asleep, make sure you gets lots of gauze to put in there and pain meds youll be ok. As for the tounge tie I hear they do it all painless now , numb you an all that, hubby was tounge tied as a child an at 6 the Dr litterly lifted up his tounge and sliced the underside with a razor.....makes me shudder just writting it can you imagine. I think youll be ok and youll feel so much better when those teeth are gone. You just dont realize the drain they are placing on your system till they are gone. Good Luck!!
Date: 7/22/2008 5:38:00 AM  From Authorid: 53961    My daughter had all four removed at once. They couldn't find her vein to do sleep meds so dentist had to go to drug store and get Rx pill. She was so dopey after wards and got sick all over my laundry room floor. Take a bucket and make sure someone else is driving you home. Have it done on a Wednesday and take the rest of the week off.
Date: 7/22/2008 5:49:00 AM  From Authorid: 42703    OUCH! I had all four of mine removed at once, the worse day was the day after. Beyond that it wasn't too bad, I lived off milk shakes for a week,Enjoy!
Date: 7/22/2008 7:49:00 AM  From Authorid: 46527    I had all 4 of my impacted wisdom teeth taken out at once. It swelled a lot and it wasn't pretty...but it felt a LOT better once it had healed. Follow the advice your dentist gives and don't lay flat to sleep for a few days, prop yourself up well, it really helps to lessen the swelling.
Date: 7/22/2008 6:42:00 PM  From Authorid: 62881    My son had a frenulectomy...it was done by a regular dentist...nothing to it.
