School is starting back up soon, so I figured I would share this with you. As a sophomore in college, somethings I had to learn the hard way, and others I was prepared for. Here are a few things to keep in mind when going off to school:
1) You don't have to be a party animal to make friends. -Although it seems like "everyone is doing it," they're not. I myself, enjoy to party, but I can have fun without doing it. It's okay to go out and enjoy yourself, but don't think that you need to drink to make friends. As long as you make the effort to meet people, you will.
2) If you don't get involved, you won't be happy. -If you stay in your dorm all day and don't attempt to get involved on campus, you won't enjoy school. My roomate NEVER came out of her room, and it was sad to see. I was always out and about, joining clubs, meeting new people, writing for the school paper, and I'm on the field hockey team. Remember to get involved to better your time there.
3) Don't make excuses with professors -They don't care. This isn't high school anymore, there are no excuses. Don't be surprised if you miss a few classes and your professor won't let you re-take that quiz, you weren't there for it, he's not going to let you take it if you couldn't come to class and didn't have a good reason.
4) WORKOUT -Don't gain the dreadful freshman fifteen! Avoid eating the fatty foods in the cafeteria, load up on water, fruits, and veggies and use the gym if possible, you pay an athletics and activities fee, so you might as well use the facilities!
5) Never walk alone on campus at night -No matter how safe you think the campus is, it's a different story at night. Pay attention to where the blue emergency telephones are listed, and take advantage of security programs at your school if they have one. At my University, they have a number you can call if you don't feel safe and want someone to pick you up, no questions asked. If you are drunk you can call that number too, and again, they ask no questions.
6) Don't get behind in your work. Studies show that if you study after your class every day, you are more likely to retain that information and remember it better. Don't let temptations like parties or other social events prolong your studying ( I learned that the hard way)
7) Don't buy your books until after the first day of class -Sometimes if you buy books a head of time, they could be the wrong books. I have showed up to class and the teacher had forgotten to update the books list and the whole class had to purchase newer books because they were not up to date. Keep your reciept also so you can return them on book buyback day after the semester ends!
That's all I've got for now... I'll add more if I think about it... :) Have a good summer...enjoy it while you can...school is about a month away!
