The "Work At Home" Opportunities... ?

Good morning USM. :)

I have a tale to tell and question to ask. My current employer STINKS! So I have opted to go BACK to school, YET AGAIN, and continue my educational persuit. Now, I did indeed graduate back in September with my Paralegal certification. And I work for a small thimblefull of attorneys now, doing random research and writing. This is a freelance job that keeps me busy enough to have a little spending money (But not too much because I do have an overhead consisting of internet bills, printer, fedex costs, sometimes gasoline etc...). It is great experience for me, and I have learned a LOT!

So anyway, we recieved a global email from this company and our vice president saying that there will be no raises this year, except for perhaps a select few. I've been working for this place for two years now, with no raise but rather a pay cut when my shift changed. Not that I have been a bad employee, my review was great last August - But the company couldn't afford to give me a raise. Then when they eiminated our night shift, I lost my shift differential. A month or so ago, they forced me into a promotional position because they had no one else who could to that type of work, and said they couldn't afford a pay increase.

I have clung to this job because although I did take a pay cut and all, it was still "Ok" money. But with gas prices the way that they are... It just isn't cutting it anymore.

I am slowly slipping back, and I am panicked!

So, I decided if I ever actually want to have any iota of job security again -*giggles* as if that exists anymore- I need to complete my education and have a leg up on the competition.

So I am going back for my Bachelors.

I still need to work though. Student loans can get me only so far. I have two counties with my name on their substitute teaching lists, but even that is no garuntee. (Besides - school doesn't start for another 5 weeks and work will be slow at first.)

So I am always looking at the jobs availabe, and they ALWAYS have those GREAT WORK FROM HOME OPPORTUNITIES!!!

I am a skeptic.

Does anyone have any idea if there are any LEGITIMATE ones around???

Date: 7/25/2008 10:22:00 AM  From Authorid: 64365    I hope you can find a legitimate company that actually outsources or hires telecommuters. These work at home opportunities you see in your email and advertised, usually end up costing you some money...you have to buy your own lists, then you have to spam people.
Date: 7/25/2008 10:47:00 AM  From Authorid: 60792    I wish they were legit. I remember this one that I actually considered until I read the reviews. You had to pay like 50 bucks to get your copies of the letter (but they included the stapler for free!) and envelopes and stuff. Then you had to stuff envelopes and send them back to the company to mail (all at your cost I believe) and for each envelope you stuffed you got a certain amount of money. I believe people paid money but never got anything at all. So be careful and do some research before you try anything!
Date: 7/25/2008 11:00:00 AM  From Authorid: 62849    www.elance.com. I did some ghostwriting projects on there, plus they have a lot of virtual assistant opportunities. It works like ebay- people list jobs they need done, and you bid on them (by telling them what work you will do for them and how much you will charge). If someone chooses your bid, you get the job!
Date: 7/25/2008 11:03:00 AM  From Authorid: 62849    I would have stayed with it, too, but I ended up getting a job on campus and taking a completely full load at school so I didn't have time to add even work-at-home to my list. This site is certainly legitimate, though. I did have to pay for an advanced membership- that is, I wanted to bid on more than 5 jobs per month so I went on a month-to-month basis so I could bid on more jobs. I got a lot of interest, and contracts for two books, but I had to pull out of the second one because school started before I could hammer out the details with my buyer.
Date: 7/25/2008 11:59:00 AM  From Authorid: 60792    yeah elance is good. Though I have a funny story, someone once was going to pay for someone to write their NanoWrimo novel XD. Like...what was the point of that? But yeah, I've wanted to do elance for a while but didn't have the time.
Date: 7/25/2008 1:23:00 PM  From Authorid: 14909    Most are scams unless you already work for a company that lets you work from home.
Date: 7/25/2008 2:21:00 PM  From Authorid: 51635    The ones that list with Monster and hotjobs aren't, they are just advertisements for you to BUY lists of companies hiring people to work from home (if they still exist or were ever real to begin with), or they want you to BUY their "get rich quick" information. There are a some real opportunities out there, good luck finding them...
Date: 7/25/2008 2:49:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 49101    Yes most of them are scams. In fact even some very legitimate job postings are scams. it drives me NUTS when I apply for a decent looking job, and it refers me to fill an online survey, then go to this site, and that... I want to smack someone when I find those!
