How can you tell if you broke your toe?

Ok, I have only had one broken bone in my entire life, and it was my collar bone. (OUCH!)

I'm typically pretty good with pain, but this evening I was walking through my bedroom not paying attention and rammed my toe HARD on the leg of our bed. Usually when I do this I say a few choice words shake it off and go on my way. This time the pain was so bad I litterally fell to the floor and couldn't even say anything.

We went grocery shopping and when we got home I decided to lay down and let my toe feel better. (Dan kept commenting to me how I looked like it hurt so bad cause I was limping, so I wasn't even allowed to help him take the bags from the car... grrr lol)

We have stairs in our house and when I went to put Amber to bed, it was all I could do to get up the stairs. I have now been laying in my basement for about 3 hours without getting up, and it was fine. I go to stand up and get ready to walk up the stairs to get a snack and pain shot from my toe up into my foot, and felt like I had banged it on something all over again.

Don't bother sayin go to a doctor, it's not my big toe, its the one next to my little toe, and all they will do is wrap it up anyway to heal.

Has anyone ever broken a toe before? How can you tell?

(Yes its definately swollen, and even when i try to tilt my foot up my toe gets very sharp pains in it) I tried feeling for some type of deformity, but its so swollen I can't even tell. And no, there is no bruising)

Halloween is Right around the corner.. .

Date: 5/13/2009 11:25:00 PM  From Authorid: 14018    Well get the sweeling down first. Keep off of it if you think you broke it and tape it your self. It sounds to me like you may have broken or fractured it.
Date: 5/14/2009 12:10:00 AM  From Authorid: 42945    Yep, sure sounds like you have fractured it hun..tape it and rest your foot up as much as you can ...I know it's hard when you have a child and things have to be done around the house, but each chance you get, rest it...
Date: 5/14/2009 1:24:00 AM  From Authorid: 57074    Oh this reminds me of when someone in my household got a 2 liter pepsi and laid it down sideways at the top self of the refrigerator and it droped down on my big toe, CAP FIRST. I had just finshed making me something to eat and I couldn't even eat after that because it hurt soooo bad that I had to sit down and I couldn't talk either. It made me literally sick from the pain but I kept it up on a pillow and it was very difficult to walk on it for like three days after that. My job made me go get it xrayed and I was shocked I didn't break it. My toenail turned black and fell off. I'm so glad thats over with. I hope you feel better!!
Date: 5/14/2009 1:57:00 AM  From Authorid: 37150    Even if it's broken, there's nothing they can do to fix it. I smashed my toe hard like that once, maybe i broke it, but it doesn't move on its own anymore and sometimes it swells up and it hurts SO BAD to tears if i accidently kick a shoe or something when i walk. I call it my "dead" toe and it hurts when it's cold weather.
Date: 5/14/2009 2:15:00 AM  From Authorid: 32806    You can tell by going to the doctor and getting it looked at by someone who will know if it is or not. Maybe even an x-ray to check, but like others have said there's often not much they can do beyond reducing the swelling and pain. Possibly strapping it up. Get to the docs though.
Date: 5/14/2009 3:16:00 AM  From Authorid: 26203    OUCH!!!! is the only thing I can say...and I hope that by now you have found out your answer, I pray it's not broken.take care x
Date: 5/14/2009 5:38:00 AM  From Authorid: 28848    I tripped over a big hardback book that was left in the floor and I heard a snap. The pain litterally knocked the breath out of me. Its the toe next to the pinky toe too. I never went to the doctor either. Eventually the pain just went away but my toe does look kind of bent LOL. oh well. I hope you get better or go to a doc.
Date: 5/14/2009 5:57:00 AM  From Authorid: 15228    As a veteran of many broken toes, one that had to be reset because it was pointing in the wrong direction, I'd say your toe is broke. There isn't much that can be done, if you go to the doctor they'll give you a boot to wear, or you could go to walgreens and buy your own boot which I recommend since it will save time and money.
Date: 5/14/2009 8:11:00 AM  From Authorid: 15677    sounds like it could be, i kicked a friend shoe and broke my last two toes when i first came to usm, you can get an x ray an see how bad, i had aspecial shoe. a way to wrap it and pain meds. it really took about 6 months to heal all the way.....hope u feel better
Date: 5/14/2009 8:34:00 AM  From Authorid: 21764    yeah it sounds like it might be broken.. when i broke my ankle it swelled first then the next day the bruising started.. i guess at the dr. they will just put it in a little splint til it heals.. i reckon you could make your own.. feel better soon! *hugs*
Date: 5/14/2009 8:43:00 AM  From Authorid: 53284    I broke mine when I was walking barefooted. I knew it was broken because it was at a 90 degree angle from where it is supposed to be. It definitely hurt and I was in Ecuador. I was at a swim meet and I just taped the broken toe to the toe next to it and continued with the meet. I had to keep it taped to the toe next to it for several weeks before I felt comfortable leaving it without tape.
Date: 5/14/2009 9:27:00 AM  From Authorid: 10754    I hear X-rays are pretty good at determining that kind of stuff.
Date: 5/14/2009 9:52:00 AM  From Authorid: 15228    Yikes, WildBob. When my toe was like that they had to twist it back into position. They did such a good job that on x-ray they took afterwards to make sure it was done right, they couldn't even tell where the break was. Is your toe back to normal now even though you had no treatment?
Date: 5/14/2009 11:41:00 AM  From Authorid: 4144    been there! wrap it up. put ice on it. mark the calender for six weeks from the day you did it cause that's when you will be abe to walk on it again without screaming! i've done it twice.....i'm gifted that way!
Date: 5/14/2009 12:01:00 PM  From Authorid: 64197    When I was a kid and teenager, I always ran around barefoot, even in the winter. When I was in the 11th grade, I was running around downtown w/o shoes on and I went to step up onto a step and I hit the last 2 toes on my right foot. It was about 40 something degress out, and it hurt when I hit the toes, but not that bad (reason being my feet were almost frozen). It wasn't until the next day that I could not move my toes and I had some swelling that I realized something was wrong, it hurt like you know what to walk on, pain all the way up my leg. Went to the dr and it turns out that I dislocated my last 2 toes, at the joints where they join with the bones in my foot. I had to have my toes and foot wrapped and I had to wear an orthopedic boot for 4 wks...to this day I still get pain in those 2 toes and I've never been able to wear dress shoes comfortably since. Did I wear shoes after that? Nope, I started wearing socks....like that was gonna stop it from happening again, huh? I was young & dumb and to this day still hate to wear shoes.
Go get it looked at, you may have broke not the toe but a bone in the top of your foot near the toe or really messed up a tendon/ligament. Good luck and hope you feel better soon!
Date: 5/14/2009 6:46:00 PM  From Authorid: 49765    it turns black and blue and swells up. Very hard to walk on.
