A perfect circle,40 ft.in diameter, is aid to be formed by the eternal pacing of the devil himself as he pondersnew evils for mankind. No tree or plant will grow there and twigs or branches placed on the path are gone the next day.Surrounding brush grows just up to the circle.A recent study by the North Carolina Dept. of Agriculture showed the dirt within the circle to be completely sterile of any type of living organism. Now a first hand visit,we made many after at least one of my friends could drive,as I grew up in a near by town and many excuses were made to go out there.Several times we even took our dates along. The circle had almost reached 'urban legend' status when I found out about it in grammar school,in the 50s.The circle is off the main road, which is marked with a NC Dept. of Highways showing the name DEVIL'S TRAMPING GROUND,and where to turn of a secondary road. There is nothing aroun for miles, more or less,so if you got hurt you were pretty much on your own.Driving down a dirt road, some kind soul usually has some kind of marker showing where to stop and the direction of the Circle.About 40yds of walking through thorns, poision ivy, thick scrub brush and you are there. Not very impressive to look at,just a large bare circle with nothing growing in it.The atmosphere is normal, no chill bumps, no strange sounds, etc.Of course this is during the day. We've put various objects in the path each time we went. One guy who played professional football later in life drug a 100 lb.barbell plate out to the site, with help and a lot of effort, just to prove the stories wrong. Some of us even spent nights in the circle, none back to back, and quite honestly were scared off each time by noises, feelings we could not explain of dread or the presence of something'evil' for lack of a better term.As we got older, this facing the unknown lost its appeal.College, families, jobs soon took its place.Radio and t.v. stations in Raleigh still send some poor person outthere, usually on Halloween,as some publicity stunt. The 100lb plate we took out to the path, we never found it.18155 How it changed my life:Didn't really channge my life.Just part of growing up and acting 'stupid'.I still go out there, not alone, and spending the night is outsides the bounds of reality.I can't run that fast anymore.
