9 babies have died from whooping cough in California

The fear mongering that has caused people to forgo vaccinations by anti vaccine experts is unconscionable.   Even if the babies who have died are receiving the vaccinations, they aren't fully vaccinated against whooping cough until about the age of 6.  They don't receive the first vaccine until around 2 months.   Part of the vaccination process relies on the 'herd factor".  Some people are to young to get vaccinated, or they may have real health problems that prevent it.  With the herd factor, these children rely on other healthy people getting the vaccination to prevent the spread of the disease.

Australia Thursday warned travellers to the United States to watch out for a whooping cough outbreak which has claimed the lives of several babies.

The foreign affairs department said a number of American states had been hit by the disease including California, where local reports say nine babies have died.

"Several US states have reported an increase in cases and/or localised outbreaks of pertussis (whooping cough), including a state-wide epidemic in California," the travel advice says.

"The United States government's Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advises it is not necessary to delay travel to an area that is experiencing a pertussis outbreak, but visitors should make sure they are up to date on their vaccines."

The department maintained its overall advice at "exercise caution", the second of a five-level warning system.

A report on the Los Angeles Times website posted on Tuesday said a ninth baby had died from whooping cough, making it the deadliest outbreak in California in five years.

Whooping cough is a highly contagious bacterial infection affecting the lungs which is usually relatively mild in adults but has a high mortality rate among children.

Date: 9/16/2010 9:43:00 AM  From Authorid: 22852    @}~~ Sadly every year as the new school year begins we get this Whooping Cough alert. I know in our school system everyone got a shot for it and if you were employed by the school system you HAD to get it unless a Dr. said it would harm you, if you didn't get the shot than you had to go home until you proved you did. I can tell you that my arm was so swollen from the shot and the swelling lasted over a month, very painful.
Date: 9/16/2010 10:47:00 AM  From Authorid: 64723    I personally wouldn't blame unvaccinated children. I was vaccinated FULLY against everything back when I was a kid. I STILL at the age of 10 got pertussis, and not only that, when I was a child I was given all the shots for MMR. And again, when I was 21 after my first child was born, and again when I was 23 after my daughter was born. Guess what? I'm STILL not immune to measles, and I never will be. I've only had my daughter partially immunized and she is one of the most healthiest kids I've ever met, so I think its just bad luck that whooping cough is making an appearance. And, I really hope you take this the way its meant, but I was so surprised when I read this and then saw that you had posted it! I thought for sure that you didn't vaccinate your children! I was quite surprised lol.
Date: 9/16/2010 12:50:00 PM  From Authorid: 998    I guess with the scares over the safety of vaccinations and their implications with autism and such, we will never be rid of these old diseases. I thought by this century we would have safer ways of dealing.
Date: 9/16/2010 12:55:00 PM  From Authorid: 11240    I am going out on a limb here and saying that a lot of these kids getting pertussis get it from their parents/caregivers rather than other kids who haven't been vaccinated. And if the demographics were published I believe it would show that the majority of those parents/caregivers are immigrants from countries where the pertussis vaccination isn't mandated.

God Bless.

Date: 9/16/2010 2:17:00 PM  From Authorid: 30229    We had 3 known cases in this area last year, no one died from them though... this is scary!!! Whooping Cough, who would have thought of it making a return with such a vengence...

Thank you for sharing, Kelly... very good information here....

Date: 9/16/2010 4:40:00 PM  From Authorid: 15394    sadly there is still the misconception that autism stems from vaccinations...
Date: 9/16/2010 5:17:00 PM  From Authorid: 42945    I agree wholeheartedly with Deb on her views of Pertussis..
Date: 9/16/2010 11:31:00 PM  From Authorid: 52443    oh my goodness, im so glad my kids are vaccinated, but i'm pushing my sister to get her 3 year old vaccinated and she refuses so everyone cross fingers that my beautiful precious neice doesnt get this *sheela*
Date: 9/16/2010 11:37:00 PM  From Authorid: 52443    also, here where i live its mandatory for your child to be up to date on their shots before they can go to school, and from experience i seen that my son was never ill or caught any viruses until he started school, then he'd get the occasional bug and the teachers would tell me half the class was out from it,so it seems that when you get a room full of small children, viruses become more succeptible, ????? just a thought *sheela*
