It was a warm sunny day in july. My sister and I were at the beach watching people walk by. There isn't much to do in Ohio, much less, Lorain; Population 3,487. My sister, Nina, was pregnant, and was eager for the Sunshine Festival to begin. This is a festival held every year to spotlight local bands. Our brother, Rey, was performing. It was the first time Rey had been on stage since he got out of prison. Things turned bad one night, when he hit a man in the head with a bottle of whisky. Killed him. He was sentenced to twelve years in prison, but was able to serve only ten. He got out for good behavior. The sky started to get dark over Lake Erie. I remember my sister feeling uneasy. She told me that earlier in the week, she bumped into an old lady. The lady said to her, that the child she was carring was going to make an impact to the people around it. She also went on to say, that something wicked was forming inside her. That bothered my sister to a point, but she was able to put it behind her. The clouds got darker and darker. The wind began to pick up, and sand was blowing everywhere. The MC came out and told everyone that the festival was cancelled. My Brother was crushed. Not for the fact that the festival was cancelled, but for the fact that he didn't get to perform. It started to rain, so my sister and I decided to go home. We told Rey that we would see him later, only we didn't know how much later. When we got home, my sister sat on the couch, to watch TV. I went up stairs to change into dry clothes. As I turned on the bedroom light, the power went out through out the house. I turned around and headed down stairs. When I reached my sister, she was crying. I sat next to her and asked "what's wrong?" She pointed to a corner in the living room. There, in the dark, was a figure. I froze!I shouted: "who are you?" The figure didn't respond. It only stood there and watched us from the corner. I could hear it breathing. I looked around to sees if I could use something;anything as a weapon. No luck. The figure started to move over to a window that was to the right of it. When lightning flashed, the strobe filled the room, and for the brief moment the light shined in the room, I saw the figure. It was a leather brown, with hair on one side of its head. It stood upright, and had wings. Its eyes were a glossy grey, and at times, the eyes turned in opposite directions. Once in while, while breathing, it would make a sound. Kind of like a loud-weezing, growl. I could see my watch, from time to time between lightning flashes. We sat there looking at this thing for two hours. All I could think about was "what's going to happen when my brother walks to the front door?" My sister held my hand as my brother's car pulled into the driveway. We could hear him singing as he walked to the front door, searching through his keys. I turned to my sister and saw nothing but shear panic in her eyes. Rey walked in and reached out for the light switch. " Hey? is anyone home?" The moment after he said that, the creature jumpped over the couch and stood face to face with Rey. My sister at this point, began to shake franticly. I stood up and said to my brother, " Don't move." " Good advice, he replied, I'll take that under concideration. What the hell is this?". I began to make my mway, slowly, to the front closet.I knew that if I could just get to the closet, I could use an old sword that I used when I was Mercutio in Romeo & Juliet. The creature was now nose to nose with my brother. It looked him over. I had my hand on the door knob. Then the creature spoke in a low and deep voice, as if it were talking through a large and very long pipe. " If he opens the door, you will die." I stoppped. I could hear it talking but was too far to hear what it was saying. Again the creature spoke, " If the door opens, you will die." I looked at my brother. Beads of sweat filled his face. "What's he saying Rey?" I asked. " Um...he says...don't open the door, or I will die." I stopped where I was and just looked. "Sit." it murmured. I said, "what's he saying?" Next thing I knew the creature turned and in a loud yell said "SIT!" My brother and I ran to the couch. The pictures on the walls, rattled as it walked in front of us. " I have come for the child." My sister looked at me for help. What could I do? It's obviuos that this thing is one hundred times stronger than me. "you can't take the baby! I won't let you!" I shouted. The creature just laughed and got into my face. " what can you do to stop me from taking the unborn?" It replied. " You are nothing;a hu-man." My brother looked at me and said, "he does have a point." I then turned to the creature and said, "ok!, I'll make a deal with you. You let me fight you for the baby. If I win you leave here and never come back, and if I lose, you can take me as well." The creature leaned back a little and then said, " I will except your challenge, but instead of duel, you will be put through the KYRUNFA!" (kai-roon-fa)"what is the Kyroonfa?" I replied. " The KYRUNFA is mearly a test of wit, endurance and strength" " What kinds of test?" I asked. "let me put it to you this way, no one has ever made it passed the second stage." I nodded my head and the creature began his test. " Your first test is to answer a riddle, ON YOUR FRONT LAWN ARE TEN PEICES OF COAL, FOUR STICKS, FOUR ROCKS AND TWO CARROTS. WHY ARE THE OBJECTS THERE?" "What happens if I don't answer the riddle correctly?" I asked. The creature just smiled and licled his lips. Now I was starting to get worried, On my front lawn, there were ten peices of coal, four sticks, four rocks and two carrots. This wasn't going to be easy. Then my brother wispered to "think snow!" The creature howled and with one motion of his hand, he threw him clear accross the living room. "Give me the answer!" yelled the creature. Then it hit me like a ton of bricks. "SNOW MEN!, THE STUFF ON MY LAWN WAS FROM TWO SNOWMEN THAT MELTED!" I smiled. The creature went into a rage, ripping the drywall off of the walls. Then he grabbed my sister by the neck and said to her,"I will return for you and the unborn." Next he grabbed me by my neck, and everything went black. When I awoke, I was surrounded by hundreds of the same creatures. I was in a chamber that was about the same size as the Astro Dome.There were torches that lit up most of the chamber. I could smell dry blood. The air was stale and it was very humid. Suddenly, a another creature came near the edge of the third story balcony. It was pretty dark in that area, but I could see the reflection, of the eyes, of all of the creatures on that floor. It spoke in a language that I was not familiar with. Finally, one of the creatures came forward and transulated what was said. "Hu-man. You have answered - first riddle of - KYRUNFA. Prepare yourself for level. If you answer the next riddle correct, you will move to combat level of KYRUMFA." Every creature in the chamber began to laugh and yell. Then two slightly smaller creatures came and ripped my shirt off and place a collar around my neck. I felt a strange sensation in my head. The only thing I remember is falling to my knees and when I stood up, I was in a white room with two very large statues, half human-half creature. The transulator spoke, "YOU ARE IN A ROOM WITH TWO DOORS." I looked around and saw the two doors. "BEHIND ONE OF THESE DOORS, IS THE NEXT LEVEL OF THE KYRUNFA, BEHIND ONE OF THESE DOORS, IS A SHENDO NEST." " What exactly, is a SHENDO?" I asked. "SHENDO ARE FLESH EATING BEATLES, THAT CAN DIGEST FLESH VERY PAINFULLY - VERY SLOWLY" At this point, things didn't look so good. "LOCKED IN THE ROOM WITH YOU IS LIER AND HONEST. YOU CAN ASK ONE QUESTION, AND ONLY ONE. THE QUESTION MUST LEAD YOU TO LEVEL TWO OF THE KYRUNFA." Needless to say, at this point, I should have let him take my sister. I'm kidding, but the thought did cross my mind. I sat down on the floor, and looked around. I stood and looked at one of the statues. Then it hit me, if the question I ask, has to lead my out of the room, then I'll just ask one statue to ask the other statue, to tell me the way out. Okay, here goes..."Ask the other statue to open the door that leads to the shendo nest. The statue spoke and repeated what I just asked him. Seconds later, the other statue pointed to the door. In turn, it swung open. Nothing was happening. I slowly creeped my may to the door and began to peek out side. All of a sudden, a guard grabbs me by the neck and throws me before the crowd of creatures. I was back at the chamber where I first started the whole thing. The head creature began to speak. He seamed as if he were in a bad mood. Then the transulator began to speak. " You have reached a level, most not reach. Our leader asks how? How you find answer to puzzle?" I shake the dust from my clothes and told him how I came to the answer to the riddle. " You said that I had to ask one question to only one statue...you never said anything about asking one statue to ask the other, a question. I knew that if I asked the liar, not knowing who he was, he would reverse my question and the way out would be shown. If I asked the honest statue, not knowing who he was, he would have repeated what I said. In turn, the liar would reverse the answer showing me the way out." The chamber was silent. I looked around, and all I could see were the reflections of their eyes. "Did I say something wrong?" On that, the entire chamber went nuts! They were throwing everything and anything the could find, at me.
