Carthage, Mississippi is a small town where my sister moved with her husband when she married. There is a rustic looking old bridge that was used to cross the Pearl River before the constuction of the new Hwy 25. After the old raod was closed, a park/picnic area was put at either end of the bridge on the banks of the river, because of it's really nice sand-bars. It has been a popular place each summer because of the good fishing, cool, clean water for swimming, and huge shade trees for picnis. About 10 years ago, at the first sign of summer, the Walnut Grove Baptist Youth group decided to have a picnic, the next Saturday at the River park. On the way they drew straws to decide who would be the first one of the summer, to swing out over the river on the rope swing and drop into the river. The youngest of the group, 9 year old Sara Stevens won. When they arrived at the River Park, all the kids ran to sandbar for their turn at the rope swing while the adults got the picnic ready. Sara grabbed the rope and swung out over the water and dropped into the river. All the other kids screamed and hollered. When Sara's head came up out of the water she too was screaming and hollering. Sara had landed in a bed of Water Moccasins. It took a few seconds for the others to realize what was happening, and a few of the other kids finally ran to get the adults about 100 yards away. But even when the adults got to the edge of the river there was nothing they could do, because there were too many snakes around Sara for anyone to get her out of the water. The Sherrif's Dept. and The Volunteer Fire Deptartment arrived and got Sara out of the water, but she was already dead. The autopsy revealed over 100 snake bites all over her body. Today the park is still used but no one is allowed to swim. If you go there at night, you can still hear Sara screaming. I thought it was an old legend until my sister took me there one night while I was visiting. She had heard the story since she had moved there, but had never been. My sister and I and both of our husbands went one night after having supper at the diner in town. We drove into the park area and put the windows down. It took about 5 minutes but we all heard it. At first it sounded like some kind of animal. But it was an unmistakable scream. It is very real. It will send chills up and down your spine. It took us about 30 seconds to get the heck out of there!!!
