The likelyhood of a prehistoric man-like creature, Sasquach? Bigfoot? Almost every culture has a version (I'm not quite sure about Europe or Australia) of a man-like creature who roams the woods. In Asia they're call Yeti, Abomidable Snowmen, and Wildman. In the America's, they are called Bigfoot and sasquach. There are still many unknown species on Earth, most of them insect species. But once in a great while, a new mammal, anphibian, fish, or other large creature is discovered. Deep in central Africa, where few outsiders ever venture, there are tales of huge lizards that thunder when they walk, and have long tails and necks. This is a relitively accurate description of a brontosaur or brachiosaur, two dinosaur species long since extinct, or are they. Another example with more tangable and scientifically sanctioned results is the gorilla. Up until around the late 1800's, the gorilla was believed to be merely a myth. That is, until one was killed and brought back for examination. Yet another example would be the Comodo Dragon (please forgive me if I spelled it wrong). There is a possibility that the North american bigfoot is a descendant of a prehistoric sloth, not of hominids. Giganta pithacis was an enormous creature from the last ice age. When standing on all fours, a male would be 8 feet at the shoulder. Standing on its hind legs, a full grown male could exceed 20 feet in height. And they were extremely fast preditors. Early humans would have no chance to escape the beast. This may explain why eary man didn't migrate to North America until after the ice age, that combined with other factors of course. When the ice age ended, the advantage of being a large animal dropped. So many large animals either evolved to become smaller or they simply died out. It is believed that Giganta pithacis became extinct, but it may have just made a sharp evolutionary turn. Perhaps, (this is ENTIRELY speculation on my part) it evolved into a creature more resembling hominids than sloths (sloth is the group in which modern bears are classified). They would have developed larger brains, there skeleton would have drastically changed. The pelvis would be altered to support a bipedal (two footed) animal. And their shoulders would be changed so as to be brachial (able to lift arms above the head). Unfortunatly it is inconcievable that such drastic changed could occur is such a short time. In order for them to happen Giganta pithicus would have had to have interbred with hominids, and anyone who has taken tenth grade biology can tell you that is imposible even with modern genetic engineering. So what is the missing link? A genetic freak of nature? An evolutionary throwback to early hominids? Or something else alltogether. We as humans believe that we know everything. Well, I can tell you without hesitation that on a universal scale we know absolutly nothing at all.
