I agree...more people(girls) should worry more about what is inside then outside. The real heart and beauty is within. Love- ![]() |

I think the media and the models/actresses have alot to do with it. Many teens don't realize that alot of the time the pcitures that they see have been altered before it has been published. America has caused teens to grow up thinking the thinner the better. when america changes the way that it advertises and uses more "realistic" weighing models then the problem will probably dimminish. ![]() |

I think the media has a lot to do with what a girl sees and trys to be like, but it can also happen to guys. There is this guy that I know of that is bulemic and he is 29 years old.I just do not know what we can do to control this and how they can stop hurting themselves. ![]() |

..Kids can be cruel, and kids cruelty drives some young teens to become aneorexic, or buelimic. In other cases, a Girl sees Britney Spears on a magazine, and realizes she's skinny as a toothpick. She wants to be like her.. So, Media does play a rather big role on a teenagers life. ![]() |

Please DO NOT DELETE THIS!!!!!! I know this is going to sound rude, but i do not care. I am soooo sick of people feeling sorry for ppl who are anorexic and bulimic. It is thier own fault. They do it to themselves. They want attention. i know this because i had a friend who was bulimic and she will even agree with me. i think that it makes things worse when people are all like "oh, poor thing..." I mean attention is what they are looking for! Don't egg them on... I am very thin i mean like way way thin, and I have been accused of being both anorexic and bulimic and it just makes me mad... ![]() |

Yeah i guess....and also just the people around you. If all your friends are skinny you are going to want to be more like them and not stand out by being the cow. Bad choice of words. I meant them for me. And most people know all of this...but it really doesnt matter. When you want to be skinny and have an eating disorder you cant think right and you are just worried about gaining an ounce and struggling to lose all this weight. And once you get to your original goal...you realize that you can become EVEN thiner! So you go farther. Its sad....to be honest though i should listen to what i say. ![]() |

While the Media's obsession with thin people, and slick magazine adds certainly may trigger or don't help the situation, the biggest thing about eating disorders is CONTROL , or so I have heard and read. For me, I have always had a problem with eating. I am very thin, and always have been. I inherited my eating habits from my mother. IF I am stressed, it is almost impossible for me to eat anything. I don't really know, I just read a lot about eating disorders and have several friends who have Anorexia and or Bullimia. Anorexia is a devestating illness, and requires professional therapy. DIZZY, While YOU may be annoyed at someone's reaction or labeling you something, your statement that "anorexics just do it for attention" IS VERY INACCURATE. May I suggest you get some reading material from a doctor's office, or talk to a professional who treats patients for this ailment! Have you heard of or read the story of the singer Karen Carpenter? Please, don't make such a generalization. The Thinker ![]() |

This is not a dumb topic! What the media is doing to young girls is tragic. They think if they are to be attractive, they need to be thin. They starve themselves, make themselve sick, and they look horrible. The opposite to what they want to achieve. We have a magazine in Aust that very rarely has skinny girls in it. They have average size girls modelling and advertising. They are trying to help let girls/women know that they don't have to be so thin to be beautiful. ~Aussie Girl ![]() |

I think that we are made to believe that the " perfect" person looks a certain way. We see mostly thin people on TV and are raised to believe that we all need to look like the beautiful people we see on the movies. It is sad that our kids aren't taught to look for the beauty inside a person rather then the outside. Aester ![]() |

My sister was bulimic and what I don't think a lot of people understand about this is how horrible it really makes you look. You really don't lose weight with it. My sisters neck became very big from overuse of the muscles. Her hair was falling out and she looked bloated all the time. It was horrible. She doesn't do it anymore thank God, though she tells me that in moments of high stress she has a fleeting urge to do it, but it usually passes. She looks better now than she ever has...I definitly think seeing these anorexic looking woman on tv has a lot to do with it. I'm 37 and 5'8 and weigh about 140 and I still find myself disatisfied with the way I look, even while knowing I'm completely normal. I can't imagine how it is for young teenage girls who are insecure about themselves to begin with. Who doesn't want to be a size 2 with a 34 D bust? But all of that is smoke and mirrors. Most of those woman on tv starve themselves and have a lot of plastic surgery which gives teenagers a false impression that lots of woman actually look like this naturally. I've noticed black woman really don't buy into what we white woman do. We white woman seem ashamed of our curves unless it involves an unnatural oversized bust. ![]() |

The Thinker-- I will have you know that i have researched this topic. I did a report oon it during high school and all the research just made me mad, as i have said above. I think that's it's all in the mind... they constantly feel the need to be thin, they never think they are thin enough, they don't think they are as pretty as other girls, they just keep starving themselves, blah blah blah... But you must admitt it is their fault! ![]() |
| Date: 2/14/2001 8:49:00 PM DizzyMe, you can claim you did research on this, but if your statements go directly against what doctors say on the subject, you can expect some flak! Besides, researching something in high school has about as much weight as ... an anorexic. |

I heard it told that models are the runways used to be "pleasantly plump". So pleasant that the men paid no mind to the clothing for looking at the woman so much. They had to start using "thin" women to get the people to concentrate on the clothes and not the ones wearing them. Now look...lol. It's crazy! ![]() |

People who suffer from eating disorders are having a problem with their self-image. They honestly think they are fatter than they are. A women who is a size zero may believe she is a size 12 or so. Their image is distorted. They look in the mirror and see a fat person staring back. Yes, they are doing it to themselves, but they believe they are fat and overweight. Most of the time they start a healthy diet and then go out of control trying to become thinner and can't stop. The other thing is the media and society tells us that thin girls are pretty and that everyone is a size 2, but in reality the average size female is 10-12. I am a size 5 and my bf has to constantly watch to make sure I eat, because I feel so huge. ![]() |

You should do a little reading on the subject of eating disorders to get more information but, 95% of the time its done for control not as a self image thing. It usually happens to girls that feel that everything in thier life is in someone else's control or they have just total lost control themselves. Eating or not eating, binging and purging, they can control, sometimes they feel its the only thing that they can control.................Azairyia ![]() |

However on another note is is psychological. Dizzy it happens to be a distortion of what they feel about themselves that is mental distortion a person suffering from an eating disorder looks in the mirror at 80 pds and "sees" someone who is 200pds. They don't see the skin and bones that we see. That is why they don't see the damage that they are doing for themselves. I have seen the people that you are talking about that have done it for attention. Both those people are the ones that say "oh look at me I am so skinny, I only eat once a day, or I haven't eaten in a week." People that really have a psychological problem hide themselves because no matter what weight they are at, they still believe that they are fat. You can't excuse the fact there are people out there that are truly suffering from this...........Azairyia ![]() |

I must agree with Dizzy Me on this one. But will tell you that I battle this one myself. Its not a matter of how people percieve me, its how I see myself. And I sure as heck dont want anyones pitty over it...its not something that goes public with me. I just dont want anyone to look at me and say "oh look at her, shes fat!" Guess what? I'm not and they dont! Actually its not even a battle for me, its just a way of life. But I am not a bag of bones,I am at the weight that I feel is right now and I have learned to maintain it. I guess this makes sense....Princess Ginger ![]() |
