Thought i'd post this cuz i live in a building that's 149 years old and believe me there are some problems with rot. If you have a small area in wood like a windowsill or doorjam or any piece of wood which you dont want to have to replace but it's shows it's age.
I found (at the auto parts store) a product called CUZ. It's a polyester resin for car body repair. It comes in several sizes. I bought the gallon size as i have some serious wood problems here and there. To mix this stuff - a golfball sized blob to about 1 inch from the tube of hardener. This will make a simiar amount of a polyester filler which can be applied into the cleaned out rotten areas. It dries in about 10 minutes, but before it completely dries, it can be sanded and filed into any shape to match the previous wood. Takes paint just fine. Youll never know it's not wood. There are similar wood restoration products but they're all very expensive. This was developed for cars but works great for just about any exterior restoration project (within reason) and its much cheaper.
I did a windowsill which was severly rotten from water dripping. Picture about 12 inches by 5 inches by 2 inches deep of this stuff. LOL It's better than the original and twice as hard ad it will NEVER rot again. Try it for anything you need to 'rebuild'.
