I heard this story long ago. It's very true.

Back around '91 (I think) a man who worked the bridges, decided to bring his young child to work with him, greatly against his wife's wishes. Telling the little girl that she could play anywhere but the brideges, he told her they were very very dangerous, he went into his office. Maney hours later, when it was almost time to bring the bridge up for the boats to pass, he decided to check on his daughter first. After about five minutes and no trace of his daughter, the man looked at the bridge and confirmed his worst fears. There his little girl was, right under the section of the bridbe that would come down as it went up! If he shifted the bridge she would be crushed. He had made his mind to get his daughter and to hell with the bridge, when he saw the great boat comeing towerds it. Horror dawned on him as he relized that the boat would not have time to stop, when it saw that the bridge wasent raised. The boat would simply be distroyed. The man knew he had the most importent disision in his life to make. Save one life, his daughter's, or save two hundred some lives. With deep agony the man knew what he had to do, turning he enterd the office and gripped the lever that would kill his child. Closing his eyes he pushed it and had to resist a scream as he heard the shrieks of his daughter and her cries for daddy...
