RESPECT FOR USM ELDERS...Thunderhead

  Author:  15033  Category:(Discussion) Created:(2/25/2001 10:45:00 PM)
This post has been Viewed (1085 times)

This post is concerning a matter that just keeps popping up on the site, and I feel it should be addressed. Granted we all make some mistakes here, but I have seen far fewer mistakes made by the elders at USM having to do with respect for others. I am speaking of the ones (even if they are 10 yrs. old) that have been here for quite a while. They have more of a feel and a deeper respect for people's feelings, and follow the rules here very well. They have tags that reflect the length of their stay...look at the numbers!!!

I have seen a few new comers come on here and relate to them as though they are equals and even insult their integrity. The elder members have spent many, many hours here working out the possible quirks in their ability to communicate effectively. I think we should all take this into consideration.

Just remember to look at a person's number before you are tempted to insult or jump to conclusions. Respect your elders, it is pretty much a golden rule every where in life...

Date: 2/22/2001 6:08:00 PM  From Authorid: 1432    I agree in some sense, like when it comes to questions or how the site is handled but in like debates and such all is fair game. Give respect to earn respect :)..
Date: 2/22/2001 6:20:00 PM  From Authorid: 8374    i think that everybody deserves respect no matter how long they had stayed here at usm...even the new comers..if they are mean then so be it i do think that they should be kicked off or whatever but why would only the elders have respect? what about the most recent who came here and has had committed themself to usm? so somehow i kinda agree w/ you
Date: 2/22/2001 6:25:00 PM  From Authorid: 18169    well said Thunderhead. i still think that e-body should respect e-body else. that's what i try to do. i know when i first started out, i tried to just sit back and watch the people who had been here for a while. you can't go wrong doing that.
Date: 2/22/2001 6:38:00 PM  From Authorid: 19016    Way to go thunderhead, You are sssooooooooooooo right . Angel 1
Date: 2/22/2001 7:48:00 PM  From Authorid: 21867    Yo Sis,
Well...I always got respect for my elders - so I guess that means I have LOTS of respect for you...hehehe, you know I'm just kidding. Come give ya bro a hug, I won't hug too tight - I know how age can weaken bone structure and all. Oh, okay, you DO knowing I'm just playing with ya. Maybe we should all follow the rules of my culture - its like a cultural rule that you ALWAYS respect your elders, and if you don't then that elder (or anyone else for that matter) has a right to beat ya rear end! Its kinda scary growing up when you have family occasions like weddings or tangi (funerals) and some old lady you don't even know is smacking ya round the ears for being disrespectful...gees, you should see them ol' grannies go hard with their walking sticks. And you don't very complain about it, or say something like "Hey, you ain't my mother"...or EVERY grannie in walking stick range takes a swipe at ya. Brutal I tell ya. Peace and hugs, AGENT SMITH

Date: 2/23/2001 2:00:00 AM  From Authorid: 23610    Hiya Thunderhead...I had this very same thought today on one of the posts written by a new member...that I notice now has been deleted. So I do agree with you to some extent, except...cough...cough...the part where you say that some come new members come on here and relate to the elders as though they are equals. Ouch...that kind of hurt. You're not saying that I'm not equal to anyone else at this site are ya? I have all the respect in the world for those who have been here for a good length of time and I do see the difference in the way most elders carry themselves and the way they treat others with kindness and respect...and that is a great example for all new members...but I do see myself as equal to anyone also. So I quess I'm a little confused here. Whine...whine...I am to equal! LOL -Lady Nyx

Date: 2/23/2001 5:35:00 AM  From Authorid: 2030    Nice post and thanks. People wonder why our patience gets short at some of the foolishness we see. It's hard to be tolerant after the 10,000th time you see it.
Date: 2/25/2001 1:08:00 PM  ( Admin-2 )   Thank you Thunderhead for this post. I will always try to deserve any respect that is shown to me. *Makes notes*....LOL

Date: 2/25/2001 1:19:00 PM  From Authorid: 7654    This was great Thunderhead.....Thank you.!
Date: 2/25/2001 1:20:00 PM  From Authorid: 3321    Thunderhead, I cannot tell you how much I agree. At one point we are all the newcomer, but we learn, and it seems to me that some people are not learning and still have not learned, despite their numbers....ANyways, this is an excellent post and I think I have pointed this type of thing out to newer members before. :)
Date: 2/25/2001 1:21:00 PM  From Authorid: 3263    Yah! :) No, seriously, good point, Thunder...I've been here for awhile myself, been through all the changes, the good and the bad and the ugly, and I'm a little bit protective when it comes to this site, and what people think about it. When I first started, there wasn't chat, there were nowhere near this many categories, no prof msgs, no tags....it was stories! I think a lot of people take it for granted...and I don't want it taken away!!!! :( Thanks for posting, Thunder :)
Date: 2/25/2001 1:24:00 PM  From Authorid: 16612    Yes, online respect is important in all online communities. It is bad for a newbie to come in and challenge or insult someone who has been there for a while.-TessekTheQuarren
Date: 2/25/2001 1:27:00 PM  From Authorid: 21847    Great post Thunderhead, everyone should follow that rule... *Zero-Shark*
Date: 2/25/2001 1:27:00 PM  From Authorid: 3321    I would also like to point out that I was coming here before I even signed up. When I started here there was no chat, tags didn't come along until months and months after I was signed up, and that was kind a Jedi-idea...he got the very first tag, I remember it's chat debut. There were also no fancy categories, the categories were simple and numbered a great deal less than now. I think it is important to appreciate this site, for I have seen it change before my own eyes.
Date: 2/25/2001 1:38:00 PM  From Authorid: 14182    ok...so...i guess what youre saying is to be rude to the newcomers...and treat the "elders" like gods?! NO...i dont think so...ive been here longer than you have...and i dont even have the right to say what you just did...you get respcet from the respect you give...
Date: 2/25/2001 1:45:00 PM  From Authorid: 13897    i agree...i think people these days, not just on this website, but in all aspects of life dont respect their elders as much as they used to. but probably because the elders need to respect the younger people as well. especially teachers. okay, i know im getting off the subject. good idea though.
Date: 2/25/2001 1:47:00 PM  From Authorid: 13897    and no, i dont think the elders should be treated like gods at all, but respect is so vital for cooperation. we respect our elders, and they respect us.
Date: 2/25/2001 1:48:00 PM  From Authorid: 3321    14182-Outlaw, no one is saying that. She has every right to say this, as she is not the only one who has noticed it.
Date: 2/25/2001 1:50:00 PM  From Authorid: 18887    same here thunderhead. people think they are better than others. thanks for the great post Spiritsof the Dead
Date: 2/25/2001 1:51:00 PM  From Authorid: 3321    I wish I could be treated like a god!!! lol...but I am not, although I should at least be respected for what I have gone through for and because of this site. Many of the older people know some of the stuff that has happened here, some of the earlier controversies and issues, and I know I have suffered from certain things on this site that happened over 8 months ago, so I will be darned if I am going to sit here and let an 11 year old newcomer tell me what to do and how to operate! I deserve the respect I put into this site, and all the effort I have put towards it.
Date: 2/25/2001 1:59:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 15033    That was well stated Persephone. It is what I feel about the people (here much longer than me) that have contributed things and have a better feel for what is acceptable behavior. Granted, there are times when even they abandon themselves to pride, but on the whole, they are seasoned veterans...well, just look at Radman and Ginger...just kidding (sometimes a little kissing up might help though) lol!!
Date: 2/25/2001 2:02:00 PM  From Authorid: 12823    "Respect ma authoritay" :-P
Date: 2/25/2001 2:02:00 PM  From Authorid: 3321    hehehe.....I've been here so long, Admin has become my best friend!!! lol.....well, pretty close to it anyways....There have been times though, after a couple of certain incidents, that I left the site for a while for things to cool down.....but they were so long ago I won't go into specifics. You really know you're cared about when you get a message from Admin and from other people here asking you to come back :)
Date: 2/25/2001 2:14:00 PM  From Authorid: 10030    Awesome post thunder, thankyou for it! But does this mean I get to boss you around??? ~sly smile~ JK
Date: 2/25/2001 2:14:00 PM  From Authorid: 27403    Good Point, Thunderhead! I am new (although certainly not young, LOL) and just got here recently. When I first started reading through the post, a few just sent me over the top. And I replied immediately, without checking profiles to see if the author was speaking from experience, had a particular axe to grind, or was simply stating an opinion. And some of the posts seemed to be expecially hurtful, which always brings out the "help the underdog" and "beat up the bully" part of myself. Even within just the last week, I have found that people that I immediately judged one way or the other, tend to not be one way at all. So, your advise is well accepted by myself, but to those who simply want to humiliate and crush those of an opposite viewpoint, you are open game as far as I am concerned. You can differ in views, and even feel your view is correct, but that does NOT mean that anothers opinion is wrong. Just different! Lightworker
Date: 2/25/2001 2:27:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 15033    Hi Holliberry, Um..*pages through rules with tongue at side of mouth* Well, there is this one clause, it says as long as you are very nice about it, you can do that...I will try to cator to your needs as best as I can...miss elder...nice Holly...*disapears from view*...
Date: 2/25/2001 2:35:00 PM  From Authorid: 19869    looks like im with the minority again. i dont agree with what you said. EVERYONE deserves as much respect as the next person. how can you say that everyone doesnt deserve equal respect? that in its self is disrespectful to EVERY new comer to the site. yes, respect the admins and all that respect you. but dont disrespect anyone. you earn respect. the elders may have earnt respect from all the others who have been here a fairly long time, but not to the new comers. i hate it when people just expect to be given respect from people they dont even know just because of a badge or status! if you dont earn respect from a person and expect it just because you are 'more important' then them, then yuo are rude and dont deserve all the respect you get. people like admin and admin 2 deserve respect from all the people using this site because it is theirs, like you would expect a visitor to respect the owner of a home. but if you saw a man shout at a boy because he doesnt show him respect (say for example he is a wealthy business man), he doesnt deserve respect from anyone except the people he has worked with and knows. U EARN RESPECT FROM EACH INDIVIDUAL. IF YOU ARE RESPECTED BY MOST, YOU DONT DESERVE IT FROM ALL!
Date: 2/25/2001 2:54:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 15033    You said it Eddy, IT IS EARNED...
Date: 2/25/2001 2:56:00 PM  From Authorid: 3321    Eddy, what we are talking about are the people who are rude right off the bat. The people who just come in here and think they're boss. We are NOT talking about bowing down to anyone or being rude to newcomers or higher numbers. If I don't recall, you yourself showed a lack of respect a while back with your one story about the Admins. If you had any respect for the site, and if you had been here long enough, you would not have publically denounced them, AND you would have gone through the very clearly outlined PROPER channels on the FAQ page. So, in essence, I really don't hold a great deal of respect for the way you act here at the site, as sometimes it is irresponsible, but as a person I hold a certain respect for you.
Date: 2/25/2001 3:01:00 PM  From Authorid: 12709    Great post Thunderhead! I know there are a LOT of people who got here before me, but I consider my ID number to be fairly low. I usually treat everyone the same, but I don't like it when someone new here comes and acts rude.
Date: 2/25/2001 3:07:00 PM  From Authorid: 3321    Blizz, I remember a time when I was floored at the 12's!!! I thought those were high!!! Look at it now!
Date: 2/25/2001 3:11:00 PM  From Authorid: 8329    Thunderhead, what a great post...I find alot of truth and need in it :) some of the "oldies" were here long before there was even a chat here at USM they come because they love to not to cause trouble at a cheap try at getting attention...interesting uh? lol....thank you for posting this Thunderhead maybe we will begin to see some effect from it!
Date: 2/25/2001 3:29:00 PM  From Authorid: 24734    Even though I have only been here for a little over a month I still try to be as nice about things as possible. I agree some of the new comers and people who don't register with USM do make more rude comments and don't fill out any info on their profile to let anyone know really what they like to do, ect. I really wish that more people (everyone) would follow the rules. And for all the USMers out there that do what you're supposed to do, I thank you for help keeping this site as great as it is. Thank you all Admins who keep this site G-Rated for others and dedicate your hard work to make this site the best! *Sugar Plum*

Date: 2/25/2001 4:04:00 PM  From Authorid: 19915    That's right! Very good post, I always try to respect people, young or old. :) Sweet_Girl
Date: 2/25/2001 4:07:00 PM  From Authorid: 3204    I'm working on getting back my original ID of 1631 so I can gain even MORE prestige than I already feel is my due! Juuust kidding. I do agree with Banner, that debates are fair game and no one is any higher up than the other. I come here to enjoy new views, new ideas and pick on new people! But there is an element of commaradarie with us older members that none of you newer ones may ever appreciate. We have been here through thick, thin, good, bad, arguments, love affairs, this, that and the other. We have seen a lot of changes take place, some we like, some we don't. I think the one thing that bonds us older members is the strength and resolve of our individual personalities. Although I may not always agree with my peers, they certainly have earned my respect and that is what keeps me coming back! Great post!...
Date: 2/25/2001 4:14:00 PM  From Authorid: 16845    I agree, but whats the deal with the numbers? if the number is smaller than yours, they've been here longer??? oh boy, I confused......
Date: 2/25/2001 4:18:00 PM  From Authorid: 20296    while I do agree that most of the elders have learned the rules of this great site, i also believe that I have as well:) I basicly respect all that deserve it:) and expect the same in regards to myself:) just because I had not owned a computer and serched out this site long ago, doesn't mean that I should be any "lesser" of a member than any of the older members, IMO, but like I said. most of the older members have learned the rules and have dedicted a lot of time to seeing it grow and prosper:) I hate to be lumped into any catagory, I want to be equal:) what about those that are neither new or old members, the in-betweenies????? are we only half as good????LOL
Date: 2/25/2001 4:24:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 15033    No I am just saying that for the most part they have been HERE gaining the trust and respect, for a whole lot longer...it only concerns you cBlossom if you didn't follow their lead in "gaining your own respect," which I am sure you have no problem with...8o) Love,

Date: 2/25/2001 4:50:00 PM  From Authorid: 15014    Hey cBlossom, I'm a in-betweenies too! Hey, I think we deserve respect too, we've been here long enough to earn it! Don't you think?
Date: 2/25/2001 4:52:00 PM  From Authorid: 15014    Hey, if we're looking at number, then I've been here longer then Thunderhead. he he
Date: 2/25/2001 4:59:00 PM  From Authorid: 27706    I try to be nice and support people. I am sorry if I am one of these people that you are talking about. -J.D.
Date: 2/25/2001 5:23:00 PM  From Authorid: 27046    Well I am going to say this even though I probably shouldn't but I am only being honest. I will relate to all and everyone as if they are my equal. I am somewhat offended by this because its almost as if you are saying that because I don't have a tag and a certain member number I am beneath others that do. Respect is earned not given. I have seen plenty of members with tags that are rude and some that have been warned by the admins to knock it off. In my own honest opinion I think that THIS is the worst problem of all with the site. I have seen many people on this site that have a big head about themselves because of how long they have been here. In truth it really doesn't matter, everyone should be given the same respect regardless of any kind of status............Azairyia
Date: 2/25/2001 5:58:00 PM  From Authorid: 18111    Your heart is obviously in the right place TH. I'm certain that those who are interpreting your meaning as derogatory towards newer members, or as canonizing towards older ones, simply due to their time put in, are taking a narrow view of your general statements. Auth#27046-your points are well made & taken, a deep breath & a longer range view of this post's author's overall idea & you may not be so offended. TH's heart has always been in the right place, that I've read, & she is also an excellent read. Try any of her ingenius stories.

Date: 2/25/2001 6:33:00 PM  From Authorid: 25046    Thanks for posting...I may not be an "elder" to USM, but I definitely agree with the respect they deserve. Rosepetal
Date: 2/25/2001 7:00:00 PM  From Authorid: 16916    Im sorry i cant agree with this..i think that it all goes back to "Treat others how you wanna be treated" I treat everyone here with repect...except for the occasional rude person you run into...thats just like sayin that just because your new your not important...everyone is important to me here.
Date: 2/25/2001 7:16:00 PM  From Authorid: 7157    very well put thunderhead!! I sure aint very high on the list of elders and I sure dont disrespect those who are, and I dont disrespect those who aren't. Very well put Thunder!!
Date: 2/25/2001 7:16:00 PM  From Authorid: 3321    I think the problem with those of you that disagree is your misunderstanding of the post. She is not talking about the tag...the tag doesn't matter. She is talking about the number. Now, just because I have an older number does not mean I am entitled to disrespect anyone, and I'm sorry if you take it to mean that, but it doesn't. What she is talking about is the lack of respect that is shown when someone first comes to this site and is incredibly rude to everyone. I know it really irritates me when I am in chat and someone with a newer number comes in and starts to swear or say things that are uncalled for, and having been here a long time, I feel very obligated to calm that person down. When that person disrespects me and the site, it is very, very offensive because I have been here so long I have become attached to the site, in a way. And, to be honest, it may not be most of you replying to this, but I have encountered this a great deal, as have others, and I have seen it in posts as well. I know a lot more about this site than many newcomers do, and if they disagree about that, then there are generally problems.
Date: 2/25/2001 7:19:00 PM  From Authorid: 3538    How true Thunderhead.I mean, people should respect everyone in general, but especially the elders.Very informative post and I am glad that you posted this.
Date: 2/25/2001 7:20:00 PM  From Authorid: 27403    You know, when I first replied to this post, I said I agreed. But now, I am not too sure. I agree that members who joined this site at an earlier date may know the protocol better, but from what I have seen and read, I am not at all sure that I could say that they ALWAYS follow the protocol and rules, anymore than the newcomers ALWAYS do! I am grateful for the site, and all those who have worked to keep it alive, but if you did not get any new members with new ideas and opinions, you would have probably grown quite tired of each other by now. So, as far as I am concerned, keep the new blood coming; if they are rude or unruly, I'm quite sure they will be "whipped" into shape in no time. *Dimples* Lightworker

Date: 2/25/2001 8:31:00 PM  From Authorid: 21923    Hey everyone. I have only been a member here for 2 months now, but have been coming here and reading stories and checking the place out for about 4 months. When I first found this place and read a few stories, I decided this site was different than alot of others (more closely knit), so I decided to observe the site a while and get to know people before I joined up. In that time, from reading stories and replies, I decided who I thought were good people here, and I would like to say I discovered most of you are very helpful and respectful. I got to know ya'll before I joined so I could interact with ya'll better. This is indeed a special place, and people who are rude degrade it. I do express my opinion if it differs from someone, but I do it respectfully. I don't run them down, I just state my view. I would like to say I have seen some fairly new people, who seem very wise and deserve respect too. I try to be nice to everyone. One thing I do hate though, is people who are not members, just writing stupid and mean comments to stories that do not even make sense and are just wasting space. I think that to reply to a story you should be required to be a member, that way we can see who you are and you wouldn't be as likely to just write stupid mean comments. Peace to all. -HH

Date: 2/25/2001 8:57:00 PM  From Authorid: 14412    Well stated Thunderhead, I would have to agree with Banner on this one, also. For we have to earn our repsect the same as anyone else at the site. I do agree that we have been here longer, but this should make us role models for the new members and that means we can help them understand the site better. So in respect to you and your post, this is awesome. I hope they all understand that we are not going to be mean to them, but help them understand the site more from our viewpoint. And as always you have my respect and i hope I can earn alot of repect from others:)

Date: 2/25/2001 10:33:00 PM  From Authorid: 9295    Hmmm...I sort of agree with Eddy in a way, that everyone deserves an equal amount of respect, regardless of how long they've been here. But, I also see alot of newcomers immediately disrespecting everyone, before they really even know what it's like here or who is worthy of respect. Guess I'm sort of taking the middle ground here...
Date: 2/25/2001 11:04:00 PM  From Authorid: 177    Well said, Thunderhead!
Date: 2/25/2001 11:11:00 PM  From Authorid: 177    I've been here since sept. '99. I'm one of the older folks, both as far as how long I've been here at USM, as well as in age. I can't say that that means I've been 100% innocent of rudeness, myself. Those of us with tempers, need to count to 10 before we click the mouse.
Date: 2/25/2001 11:18:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 15033    Hi my Blue Friend, that was good advice...I am still a newbie here and I need to hear what I can do to make everyone happy...Love,

Date: 2/26/2001 5:57:00 AM  From Authorid: 6814    I think everyone deseves respect if they were here for 2 years or 2 days they should respect everyone you have to give respect in order to get it in return (sorry if somethings are spelled wrong)
Date: 2/26/2001 6:55:00 AM  From Authorid: 19016    That just about says it all. Thanks Thunderhead. Angel 1
Date: 2/26/2001 9:07:00 AM  From Authorid: 16671    wow, sixgun and thunderhead, you have been here longer than I have,ok, respect is what you will get. Great post thunderhead, I dont think some really are understanding what your trying to say, but I'm sure they will get it. Loves to you girl.
Date: 2/26/2001 12:00:00 PM  From Authorid: 160    For the record I dont believe that numbers are an indication of how long a person hes been here. Maybe the gremlins have something to do with it but when someone logs on as a new user they do not neccesarily get the next number in line. Due to computer problems, I have head three numbers, and 160 was the last one that I drew. I dont know if anyone else knows this so just file it under FYI.
Date: 2/26/2001 2:37:00 PM    Oh hail to the elders the eternal wellspring of truth knowledge and manner's.
Date: 2/26/2001 5:37:00 PM  From Authorid: 27403    Oh, Pamyjo, that is just too too hilarious. I know I have a somewhat sick sense of humor, but how, now, are we to bow in awe to those who were here before us, if we can't count on the humbers?Lightworker
Date: 2/26/2001 8:20:00 PM  From Authorid: 27403    LOL! The word is numbers, not humbers! Laughing so hard, my fingers went crazy. Lightworker

Date: 2/27/2001 6:31:00 AM  From Authorid: 27403    Where in the world does someone get the name "Big Feet Running Hog"? Surely not from a parent, or they have a sicker sense of humor that I do!! LOL!! I obviously need to meet your sister! *Smiles* Lightworker
Date: 2/27/2001 7:06:00 AM  From Authorid: 160    Seems to me that I remember my baby brother calling her that when we were kids, (before the flood of Noahs day) and it stuck, she really does have big feet you know!
