Darkness rides up the bark of trees It's only the sun that is setting But I see the darkness walk on two feet When daylight's already forgetting
Then the city breathes a sigh of relief As the messengers head on home Its buildings relax from the day's task Knowing they are now left alone
Quiet and still in the night's chill The lamppost knows it is needed But it hangs its head low with a glow That the next lamppost repeated
There's nothing here in the artificial light That isn't here during the day But it all looks differently from what I see When the sun rises it goes away
