Music Is God-given
Music surrounds us -- in the car, the elevator, the grocery store, the office, and often at home. If we don't understand what music is, and how to use it to glorify God, we may be affected adversely without even knowing it. That's why I began this series on the meaning of music. In my first column, I proposed a definition of music: Music is a God- given, morally neutral language of emotion communicated in a cultural context.
During the next few weeks, we'll be looking at each phrase in that definition, seeking to establish its truth biblically, and applying those truths to our lives.
"Music is God-given." Scripture repeatedly portrays music as a gift from God. It is seen at the creation of the world (Job 38:7) and at the end of the world (Rev 5:13). We are told in Colossians 1:16 that Jesus created all things, visible and invisible. That includes music.
Now, this is not the same as saying that all music is used for good purposes, or for God's glory. Obviously, music can be used for evil purposes, especially as it is connected to a particular context or cultural experience. But does that make the music itself evil? Not at all.
Sex is a gift from God, too. Its pleasures are described and extolled in the Song of Solomon. Within the context of marriage, sex is not only "not bad," but holy and pleasing to God! Yet, when used outside of God's intentions, sex becomes destructive, offensive to God, and a source of legitimate guilt. Wherever a gift from God is used for sinful purposes, the fault lies entirely with the user, not with the gift.
Because music is God-given, we should approach music, and the making of it, with humility. We are not the authors of song. God is. God allows us as creators (with a lower-case "c") to imitate His unique role as Creator. The difference is that God creates out of nothing, while our creativity is "second-hand." We can create only because He enables us to, and has provided many tools for us to use -- rhythm, harmony, melody, instruments, etc. There is no combination of musical elements that has not already occurred in God's mind.
Because music is God-given, we can also approach it with confidence. Music is a part of the creation over which we are to exercise dominion (Gen 1:28). It has no control over us other than the control we choose to give to it. Various philosophers, as well as a number of godly, well-meaning Christians, have claimed that some music has the power to exercise an irresistible influence over its listeners. Next week, I'll discuss in more detail why I must respectfully disagree with that view.
Until then, may His praise always be on your lips.
For His Glory Alone,
