AHHHH!!!!! I totally agree. I think you should have to go take a test because there is just a point where you can't drive anymore. By having it go through mail, you just don't know. I don't think it should go through the mail at ANY age though. But especially those who are older. |

I think, if someone wants to be driving, then they should go take the test and all...it should be mandatory. I never heard of that "reward", but i don't think it makes much sense..... |

I think I have to agree with you on this one. That's terrible you were in an accident like that, not to mention that you also lost your children. Just because an individual has had a clean driving record for 5 years, doesn't mean that they haven't caused accidents by being on the road. |

Ok heres another Horror Story...Me and RAmmy were driving down a major street and I don`t know why but I looked to the right of me and there was this elderly lady that had a bewildered look on her face and she was riding the brake. SHE LOOKED HORRIFIED like she was lost or didn`t know what she was doing in the car!!!! We almost called the police to report her before she killed someone. |

I have to say, i think everyone should take an anual test for driving...not just elderly people. My grandfather is like 73 and he's just as good a driver as anyone else. And its not just elderly people that drive like maniacs. Ive seen teens and middle aged people drive absolutely crazy as well. So, its not just elderly people, its every age. |

I can relate to this! Not that I want to be mean and take someone's freedom from them. But I live in Phoenix, Az. And not far away is a place called Sun City, an active retirement community. In certain parts of this city, golf carts are permitted on the road, same as an auto. I used to have to drive to work through that area, and beleive me, I was on constant alert! Just my opinion, in areas such as this, it might be a safer idea to have measures taken to insure the safety of all. |

Kiki I have to agree with you, there was this man that used to come into the store that I worked for. He had little use of his hands and he came in and got tissues, gingerale, papertowels, deli ham and a box of donuts. It was the same everytime and it took him almost an hour to go around the store himself and get these items. He is totally ridden with arthritis. He would call on a cell phone and ask the front end manager (usually it was me) to bring a cart out to him to the north entrance of the store. He needed to lean on it to get out of the car. I used to cash him out and I would have to take his wallet out of his pocket and get his money and then put it back in his pocket, then carry his groceries to his car and help him get back in it. It was unbelievable to see an elderly person get into a car and drive away in that condition. There is no possible way that he has any kind of reaction time whatsoever...........Azairyia |

The Laws differ from state to state. Here in Missouri, A person cannot renew their drivers license until they pass a vision test, either at the License Bureau when you go to renew, OR it has to be a form filled out by an eye doctor. I do agree that after age 65, a person should be examined by several tests each time they come in for a renewal. I live across the street from a retirement village, and those old birds tool around here, going 30 miles an hour in a 65-70 zone, and many can barely see over the dashboard! The Thinker |

I have to agree with Forever Yours, not all elderly people drive badly. Some are actually better than "young" people. Here in Arizona, you do have to take the driving test. My grandmother is getting ready to take hers. DoodleBug |

I totally agree with you! You know I am only a teenager, but I think elders cause more of the accidents than us young ones. I always have some old person cutting out in front of me. They look one way, but not the other. And it's always in my direction! I'm sorry to hear about your accident. But I do agree with you and support you! ~Natasha~ |

You are so right Kiki. I know of several elderly drivers who should have stopped driving years ago. Lawmakers are probably reluctant to support legislation like this for fear of people accusing them of age discrimination. But a law really should be passed for mandatory testing after a certain age. I agree that they should have to go in and take a driving test to renew after a certain age, and i dont mean just a written test. they should have to drive with somebody and pass that. I also think they should have to have an eye exam from a Doc. not just read a few letters of a chart. ... |

I agree also because all over this town are oldy's driving around and I agree w/J.D they do think they own the road, out of respect for the eldery ok, we should move and get out of the way just like they should give the road back to us and hang it up. (sorry mom ) but get off the road! LOL DINA |

I totally agree with the comment about Dr.'s notifying the government if they feel a person is too old to drive and make good judgement..this also includes optomotrists. Elderly ppl are not the only ones that are unsafe on the roads..there are plenty of younger ppl who are out hotrodding or ppl that are very careless sometimes related to weather conditions...I agree with the one comment about everyone shouldn't be able to renew their liscense by the mail.It should be mandatory for everyone to go in and take a test that way it proves that you are still safe to be on the road...Alcohol still is a major factor in car wreck fatalities today and I'm sure its safe to say that grandma didn't get toasted before she got behind the steering wheel...Anyone is capable of being a horrible driver not just the elderly they just happen to have the age process slowing them down in a way that takes away their alertness which in turn makes them not safe to be on the road anymore...deLISHAs |

But what about the teenagers who could care less if there is a stop sign, or the person middle-aged that is driving while he/she knows that with their medical condition should never be behind the wheel? I'm not totally disagreeing with you. I almost lost my life last Nov. in a wreck becuase a 44yr old man decided that no matter how bad his seizures were, he was going to drive. It's not just the elderly. Rosepetal |
